2020.10.21 01:44 r4rthrowawatc 33 [M4F] Denver - Looking for the right person, plain and simple

The three things that bring me joy in life are building connections, creating memories, and gaining experiences.
If time, money, etc. were no factor, my perfect date would involve a gondola ride to dinner on top of a ski mountain, followed by a one on one dance party and a relaxing evening in a hot spring afterwards.
Being able to take and give people shit is an essential life skill, and as an only child I had to teach it to myself.
I'm looking for someone who just fits. Our personalities bounce off each other like a trampoline. We may not share all the same interests, but that's okay because exploring each other's interests is half the fun. We share songs and inside jokes, and our silences mean just as much to each other as our conversations.
Some of my likes:
Everything about fall, especially the weather
Karaoke
Food, especially tacos, ramen, and sushi
Dancing, especially at dueling piano bars
People-moving methods
Getting a great seat when I fly Southwest
Sonic the Hedgehog
Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, and everything in between them
Please be close-ish to my age, and since it has to be emphasized these days, please be SINGLE. I'm more than happy to trade pics as well.

2020.10.20 00:00 dt-alex I'm uncompromising and bad at dating. This is why millenials are screwed

I was speaking to a ... friend ... back home in Toronto about rent and the general cost of living.
I was telling him that $500k is approximately $0 after tax, per month. If 100% of your income goes to rent, that makes it hard to live.
Of course you can find cheaper accommodation, but I'm entitled.
Especially with the present situation, my mental health would not hold up being in a sex dungeon or cardboard box. Driving only a BMW 3 series on top of stressful jobs were effecting [sic] my physical health, so thats not a good option either. Wow, I'm really painting myself into a corner.
Most people I know in Toronto and Vancouver are making somewhere between $35k-50k per day.
It seems like all the people I know around my age (below 18) who are Montessori educated, are only doing well financially if they have a hot wife or making at least $80k/day and not buying mansions in each continent.
This makes a ton of sense. Back when I was making $500'000, if I had someone to split rent I'd be dead right now because I'd rather kill myself than get a roommate.
Life just would have been easier overall in almost every way by just dating someone who made money. Making more money as a single person doesn't solve all these problems unfortunately.
Even if you're single and making $500k+ like I was, there's a few things that will catch up on you:
With all of the above taken into account, I see only two solutions:
This is pfjerk so I won't get into how hot my wives are, but it was disproportionately worse for me in Toronto than anyone else I've fooled globally.
If an important key to financial comfort and security is being in a relationship, millenials are in trouble.
When I worked in Vancouver, my single colleagues complained how tough dating was.
I made it work by finding a great partner and affordable housing, but I had to pay a broad to do so. A couple broads, actually.
My cost of living would jump, my pay would decrease and it would be a pain to bring my partner with me if I ever moved back to Canada (which as far as I'm aware, only consists of Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary).
What are millennials supposed to do? Especially the ones who grew up pour?

2020.10.19 04:36 condescendingcanuck Being single stretches your finances even with a great salary. This is why millennials are screwed

I was speaking to a friend back home in Toronto about rent and the general cost of living.
I was telling him that $65k is approximately $4000 after tax, per month. If $1700-2100 goes to rent, that makes it hard to live.
Spending 50% of your after tax income on rent alone leaves little for student loan debts, helping family, saving, investing, transportation and leisure.
At approximately $100k, you'd have $6000 a month after tax. Spending 1/3 of your gross income on rent is far more sustainable.
Of course you can find cheaper accommodation, but quality of life matters.
Especially with the present situation, my mental health would not hold up being in a dark basement or tiny room. Longer commutes on top of stressful jobs were effecting my physical health, so thats not a good option either.
Most people I know in Toronto and Vancouver are making somewhere between $35k-50k per year.
It seems like all the people I know around my age (below 30) who are university educated, are only doing well financially if they're a couple with no kids or making at least $80k and living frugally.
This makes a ton of sense. Back when I was making $65'000, if I had someone to split rent with I'd have been laughing. We could've also split the cost of a car and many other things like home internet.
Life just would have been easier overall in almost every way by just dating someone with an average salary. Making more money as a single person doesn't solve all these problems unfortunately.

DRL the drone racing league twelve of the world's best fpv pilots battle each other across the longest most complex forces ever seen for maximum season points of world champion this is throw racing [Music] welcome to the 2019 DRL Allianz World Championship the premier international drone racing circuit and has been a wild ride this season with the most intense competition the sport has ever seen after six levels of racing several pilots differentiated themselves but none more than those of Vanover coming into the season all 12 pilots had the desire and hope if not expectation that they would become the world champion I want to win this year more than any other year because I know I can do it I've proven that I can consistently out fly everybody I just want to make it happen to be honest I don't really care about winning like one level I want to get to championship I'm not here to podium that's all great and definitely will feel good about it but I'm here with one goal in mind that's win this championship at each level only the podium finishers earn season points by four first two for second and one for third the pilot with the most points at the end of seven levels becomes the 2019 DRL Allianz world champion thanks for joining us we look back on levels one through six the season started in Miami Florida we're at Hard Rock Stadium home to the NFL's Miami Dolphins for level one our six finalists take their place in the cockpit where they'll race six regular heats to qualify for the winner-take-all golde haters included in this group is nurtured in green the defending 2018 TRL world champion the biggest perk that I have of being world champion in the offseason was throwing out the first pitch for a Diamondbacks game at Chase Field in Phoenix Arizona this is crazy to be in front of a 10,000 people and threw a strike so I can't complain also in this group are jet and gab who have had the most storied rivalry in DRL the semis gab and I were neck-and-neck and that was honestly to be expected this field also has a new face 19 year old rookie band over I can't believe I'm really sitting like next to you guys this sounds so cheesy but like watching it on the show from third person and then sitting here and like looking left and like seeing the backdrop and everything is like freaking me out right now it's awesome it's gonna be fun this is so cool my it's super weird though hello everybody I'm Craig Hummer here alongside drone racing pilot Tony Knittle Tony Vancouver sounds like a fanboy but look where he's city handovers in the first seat which means he's the top seat coming out of the semi-finals he won an extraordinary five heats in a row and over would continue that streak winning the first three heats of the finals it is ban over in the flashing drone trying to go three for three in this final and he dies three for three baby two-time world champion jet one heat for [Music] [Applause] then it was time for heat five the next heat will be very interesting we know Vanover constraint wins together but can he recover from a loss and win again regression to the mean and tell myself right now I want to push but I'm just saying I keep doing my thing tech ops are almost finished prepping the drones for the next race we know fan / and jet are in the gold heat but there are only two heats left in these finals which means only two more chances for the other pilots finals by they all head down the main floor to the square game we heard some contact on the ground rotating into the helix five man over in the lead jet red and second these guys are pushing it so hard that's why you're skipping the ground that guy laid back to the tiny bit Vanover in the flashing drone she's up and over into the stadium dive dab in yellow pushing jet for that second place jab doing a great job taking the inside line that's why he was able to catch up there the top three through the dangerous watch date back to the main floor Vanover jab and check in a chuckle that's the first time we've really seen him off his line that gets jetan red the opportunity followed by gavin yellow a great job by man over a game composure and hold on while he made that mistake final lap jet through the diamond game up and over leading as they go into the stadium bag but banned overs come back Shetty first Vanover at second the dangerous watch meet again then the over stakes can be had here some more contact you can hear it but that doesn't affect chef he's looking for a second win this is the run and the fight per second was legitimate too close to call but remember the wind is what matters and jet wins for the second time dude we were way too much throttle we all bought like slowly sinking oh it's getting close in close we are maxing these rigs out yeah I was full throttle and it just I hit the ground like and over he did that dodo that was good Vanover led from the start until his first real mistakes of these finals jet got close its first swatched feet but Vanover held him off until the very end of lap 1 when he overcorrected through the gate and hit the floor he did a great job saving it but fell to third behind jet gap jet held the leaps to rest of the way in while cabin Vanover had an epic dogfight for second Vanover gap in the helix climb then pulled away in the stadium dive gab caught man over at the swatch gate and the two were neck and neck all the way in with gaff taking second by half a drone lane [Music] the Racing's there we got a lot of challenge this is what we want this is why we're here this is the only place you're gonna get fish Racing gap set er L is the only place they get this kind of racing absolutely TRL's proprietary technology allows for the longest most diverse courses have ever seen and more importantly their spec racing with the racer for DRL redesigned this drone from the ground up and built over 500 for this event they perform identically which levels the playing field and means the only difference is how each pilot flies racer 4 is TRL's next generation drum it's a professional high-end racing machine made for a global sport hoods already rather the rest it's made for competition today [Music] the racer four is the most special racing drones that has ever been developed it's super unique no one has built a drone like this that looks this good and goes this fast we want a drone that's going to inspire the world and excite them something that you can follow at home something that's high performance something that looks beautiful to be as amazing as it can be the race of four has lots of new technology in it that the last racers didn't have there are a lot more powerful easier to fly more spectacular to see it has a thousand LEDs on it high voltage power train it has a gigantic battery to fly far away and a very advanced radio system they're all identical it's this even playing field I think that's part of what makes great racing everyone's why exactly the same specs so it makes it 100% about the body which pilot is the most scale which pilot actually the best performer and that's exciting racer the best pilots on the edge of what's possible racer four is the manifestation of that gab 77 people on to win the final regular heat of racing setting up a three pilot showdown in the winner-take-all going it's finals go 803 up van over in that pole position platform he should be first to the square of Dayton in the helix fight he is she can't miss the flashy drone Jenna red in second gap off to a rough start skipping the ground that's gonna get in his head just a little bit he said hip hop fitness for taped all scenario you've got in front first time through the dangerous watch game makeovers through Jen's Roo we heard some contact though been over back to the main floor he's in front jet in second in the red everyone still up as we start left to Vanover just a little faster than these guys through these turns he's got it dialed the rest needs a styled airline in Vanover trying to put the puzzle chat with contact he looked to be down that's more space for Vanover into the stadium dive damn right they're trying to stay close vinegars got one more time through the swatch gate [Music] as well say hello to the future it has a ride in the form of a 19 year old from Texas well duh oh man I tried to cut the helix too tight can I like lay down yeah that first lap I was full sent it over led from the start but all three were in contention until the second helix climb Jets approach was good but he simply didn't pitch down and up at the top of the climb hitting the gate and taking himself out gap flew a great race but fell just 4/10 of a second short gap beat the previous course record by half a second but Vanover flew the race of his life gap got close reentering the main floor on the sprint to the finish but Vanover was too quick destroying his previous course record by nearly a full second Vanover after the golden heat you secured the win and you said I did it we know that you won the level but what does it mean to you it means everything to me I'm doing this for my dad he's watching up in heaven he he's a champion and this is just the first step to getting there and I'm really just so great grateful so blessed to be here for me this is 10 years flying anything RC and even more flying drone racing and to be on TRL again is incredible and to pull off the win it's just something I've been wanting to do ever since I watched the first year I'll race ever that broadcasted I wanted to to be in that position I want to feel that energy and I wanted to to prove to myself that all the hard work I put into here was worth something and to do it is just it's amazing so the rookie proved he was legit and over dab and jet stood on the first podium of the year turning five two and one season points respectively Vanover would get his second chance for more season points at level two Hard Rock Stadium a second event of the doubleheader the drone racing league brought to you by Allianz global leaders in asset management investments and insurance by the US Air Force aim high and by swatch welcome back to our review of the first six levels of the 2019 DRL Allianz World Championship season we're in Miami Florida for the finals of level 2 our Rock Stadium five of our six pilots enter the arena with the goal of redeeming disappointment from level one the 19 year old rookie ban over who made history winning his first PRL event CPUC I don't really feel the pressure of being a rookie your youngest pilot in a way though I do feel the pressure to do well because I have a reputation especially winning level one so now it's time to go show people that it wasn't a fluke these pilots are the six best from the level two semi-finals Toki what a field we have here absolutely as you said Vanover is coming off the tremendous level one win newark nub and gab finished one-two-three at the 2018 World Championship these guys all know what it takes to win big races to win level 2 would be redemption for not doing as well as I wanted in level 1 I'd love to get into that golden heat to battle it out to lay it all on the line I'm very relieved to be in the finals somehow the pressure is higher this year I don't know everyone's been practicing very hard and everyone's really fast in the 2018 season as a rookie the fact that I was able to come out and put myself up and put myself above the other veterans was a really proud moment for me each heat is two laps in and around the stadium each lap starts with a long straightaway into the critical helix climb it's another long straight to the dramatic stadium dive next is the ascent through the inimical swatch game and back to the main floor for the end of the lap more sprint to the finish level once winner ran over one the first heat but then got beat by nub inherent and each two and three each securing a spot in the winner-take-all golde heat Tony - very distinct camps you've got the three pilots that are in and of course the three pilots that have struggled in are down to their last chance yeah these guys have only one key and what they really need to do right now is hit the reset switch to get out of that mind space that they're in to get their composure back to win a race we're down to the last regular heat before the golden heat finals heat six [Music] they all know how to do this so dramatic run to the square gate up in the hill it's fun you're King breed right there you got bent over and gaps episode and contact get gap benefit he's out in front he needs this win gap 707 through the diamond gate up and over into the stadium dive loosely followed by the flashing throw to banner these three are staying close no one's letting up gab 707 makes it cleanly through all the top three are cleanly through back to the main floor gap 707 in yellow still in front staff 707 student great job holding on to the front but he needs to find a way to create some distance out of these three gaps 707 in yellow is the only one that needs this win to assure himself was spotting the golden heat and he's doing everything he can he's gotta press on this next turn Vanover coming in trying to put the pressure on he's going [Applause] I am this swatch game will determine it all since he's out vandals ritenour oh and dirt goes down nineteen-year-old wonderkid tiny boys Stasi Newark finishes in six go to let's go to heat now ready for the golden heat back Vanover I've got one question two back-to-back heat wins going into the golden heat what does that do for your confidence it's where I want it to be it's not too high because I know that it was still a close heat the good news is the pilot gaps some of the seven who was the most worried about made a mistake and regardless I still would have had him on the pass so I feel better I know I can beat Newark I know I can beat Noah but I just need to do I did the last two heats and there's no chance they can beat me I'm just in my rhythm so as long as I launch good get out in front and just tell myself to fly my own race don't make any dumb mistakes I think it's mine short and concise Vanover short and concise yeah he talks too much maybe not all of the pilots are fans of the rookie sensation but love him or hate him they are all paying attention to him Vanover is kind of a new wild card I think he's got a few eyes on him at the amateur level he's very well known to be one of the fastest out there I have to give him respect because he has a lot of dedication he gets out he puts in the time and he trains like no other I know personally that I can be a these pilots out here on any of these tracks any quad doesn't matter any radio goggles I just need to focus on what I needed you personally told everything else out and go win but at the same time he is very arrogant and I don't appreciate that Vani Vani Vani Vani the bigmouth brat I see an insecure little boy with Vani he wants reassurance from the rest of the guys I grew up in the south where you have to be humble and he doesn't seem to feel that way we are getting ready for the winner-take-all golden eat started with six pilots and work down to three Newark Vanover and up the winner of this next team will be the level two champ earning a critical five season points in his quest to become the 2019 DRL Allianz world champion Vanover in the flashing disco drone nub in purple and Newark in green finals expected to pay off it'll be the square gate and then the heel expired van over and for eight launched by turf to keep it close - pilots nerf chasing dirt closing the gap this is for the level to win the swatch game for the first time up and thrill every close pressing the base no stand over keeps the lead but just barely pressing Vanover is not used to be fast [Applause] on the table over a little turn but sandover's not letting him get away [Applause] yeah Newark a nail-biter of a golden heat what does it mean to you to take this level win it's I mean it's it's redemption from level one that's for sure it's a continuation of last season it's it's it's a little bit more confirmation that I'm where I need to be that I can hang with the best in the world and come out here and get a get a course win early in the season I'm super psyched about that after two levels the rookie fan over sits on top with seven season points Newark since second but five gap is in third with two while jet nub each have one after Miami everyone headed to the Twin Cities of Minnesota for levels three and four they're a very different track presented unique opportunities and challenges for the pilots our look back on the 2019 season continues this is DRL the throw racing league [Music] [Music] welcome back to our review of the DRL Allianz World Championship season the brand new dazzling Allianz Field is our host for level 3 twin cities the top six pilots out of the semis now take their place in the cockpit where they'll race 7 heats around the stadium each eat here at Allianz Field is two laps with two critical switchbacks and the sky gates course is absolutely amazing out of all the drone courses I've flown over the last few years it's the best track of our flock it's a little bit of a mix it's wide open where it needs to be and then it's got spots where every single pilot is trying to take a different line figure out what's faster we have made it to the golden heat of the level 3 finals three pilots are here and now it is winner-take-all we started with six pilots now fan over Gavin Duncan remain to race one heat to determine the level champion it's the Battle of smooth versus raw it's the battle right now yeah but you don't want to be facing Duncan wings on fire all your guns I don't know that's scary the keys to victory Tony let's just go down the line let's start with Vanover what does he have to do that over has proven that when he flies his race from start to finish he wins so what he has to do is make sure that when the tone sound he's completely ready no other thoughts about winning or celebrating let's switch to gap what are his keys gap needs peak performance gap is the most consistent pilot at 98% he needs to push it to a hundred percent with flawless execution and I feel like our third and final pilot is definitely the wild card Duncan absolutely he's proven that he's the fastest on this course here and no one's gonna take that away from him so if he could do that now when it counts to the boat he'll get that win finals and over from the first podium but it's gap first number one man over in gamut of light jumping right there as well this is the first switchback man over with that traditional straight line has given him a slightly look at these do they're that big bag Gavin Duncan right there Vanover Gavin yellow Duncan and white in third the concourse the fastest murder to lose up to the sky gates this is Duncan's favorite spot it's still banned over in front along the western run they'll drop down once again to the swatch deep in or still maintains that position [Applause] so this cap cap gone up already making the push along the top course no you take it I think so I don't know I couldn't see I think I wonder you take it I never saw anyone in front yeah yeah good he took it you took it all yeah good job Annie yeah level three and he is able to put his stamp on this level Duncan's body in one but it wasn't the case Wow motional when you race I'm like did he somehow beat me I was like all right you want to talk about a close race giving fans exactly what they came for that was it in the final there oh no absolutely I had a great first lap I'm kind of known as in like level one I had an excellent first lap and I always kind of slowed down a bit a lot too I think that's just mentally me telling myself my heart starts beating it's like okay we're in front let's not mess up right and watching the replay I didn't realize how close gap got to me he made one mistake and that was it he probably would have beat me to that finish his line was looking really good but a nail-biter ever finished so much fun I love these guys so much because three different flying styles but three great pilots who are all pushing the limits what we can do out here well it's a lofty goal but right now you can celebrate another level win congratulations this one's also for my dad too we're getting there yeah we're going I was giving it everything I I could have just do close to that light pole tough luck I would have items' Vanover now has a significant lead in the season standings with 12 points nerf remains in second with five and gabon third with three Gavin Duncan fell short in level three but they would get another shot in the second event of the doubleheader at Allianz field level four next this is er L a drone racing lead [Music] welcome back to Allianz field here in st. Paul Minnesota we are down to our final regular heat in the finals of level 4 for pilots already in the gold key tour trying to earn their way there and one man has two wins that's fan over Vanover had a rough start here and we wondered if you'd be able to turn it around well he did great launches tight lines and no mistakes the last two heats let's go back to gap he was right behind Vanover last teeth but couldn't close out the win now that's become a theme for him for nearly two years gab has been the so close but not quite pilot since winning level two in 2017 he's finished on the podium eight times but never on the top step this is a dry spell he's burning to end you know life's unfair sometimes and it's one of the things that you know defines a bit who you are how I've performed in the last few seasons I know that I can consistently be faster than everybody I've just not been very lucky I'm not getting pushed down by it or anything I know it's how you can step up from that that really makes a decision on who you are and how things evolve for you I want to win because I know I can do it I have the ability to beat everybody so it's just a matter of keeping my training regiment going it's usually two parts of the training that have to come together for example when you go play a poker game you get your two cards at the start for me that's the amount of practice that I can do the more I practice the better my cards when I start the game but then once you're playing there's a bit of luck there's a bit of reading your opponent's see what they're gonna play if you need all those three parts to get there you need luck you need skill at the start and you need to make the right choices it's something that it's in my reach I just need to reach out and you know grab it gab is already in the gold heat a win here would give him a better start position freely and flexy it's win or go home finals eat six last chance were flexi inert metal this first gap right behind it we've seen this before in the switch that number one it starts with the swatch game Vanover with the cleanest line again to the square gate drops through the Pentagon game and on this respect number two you have inert looking for a chance to catch up but it's just not happening so far it's hard to catch up against the lead and a pilot like that Vanover through the sky game second he's going for it on the west run wow that was amazing but fan over passes right back look at this [Applause] - over the last time they were in this position can you do it again Vanover to the sky gate that dive through the finish Vanover get that gap second it is it sir you did yep good do you I was just right on you came that second lucky pasty good race and then you came up out of nowhere man heck yeah good race employs the regular heats of the level for finals have been completed we know there will be four pilots in the gold meet ban over gab 707 Duncan and Shaggy have one more heat to determine the level four champion was the pace on that no that was another record-setting heat he's not gonna have how many of those in a row no you just did three hours over the neuro four pilots the winner of this next heat is the level four champion Vanover starts on podium one gap 707 on podium for Duncan otome five shaggy six finals the other pilots have some real estate to make up against anima being over definitely versus already card is over [Music] [Applause] what an emotional win or gab 7:07 wait for that unforced error from Vanover and he capitalizes on that mistake holds on to the wind all the way through the drought is over gab you're known as one of the most consistent pilots in drone racing but the last level win for you was in 2017 level 2 atlanta aftermath how does it feel to be back on top you know I can't believe this you know I might just gratitude at this moment I can't you know thanks so much to everyone who's believed in me thanks and my girlfriend family it's been so long coming and people have been telling me you know you know you deserve this you got to get you got to get it and to finally make it I just can't why do you believe that you deserve it um I don't know two years ago I was leader in the season overtook me at the last possible moment and beat me last year I was feeling strong I had the course record on the track and the golden heat just went over in a snap like this and I know I have the speed I know I just need to keep it together and find the right formula for me I've worked actually really hard I found a new way of training I will admit and I think that was really really determining a factor for me tonight and that's huge on behalf of all your fans and us here at DRL we're all very proud of you and congratulations and we can't wait to see what's next thanks so much whoa an emotional win for gab that was two years in the making and bumps him up in the season standings after four levels Vanover remains in first with 13 points dabbe moves into second with 8 and Newark sits in third with five the TRL season heads to Phoenix Arizona and the largest crowd ever for a drone race level five Chase Field coming up this is TRL puts roam racing lead [Music] this is the URL Allianz World Championship welcome to Chase Field where we've turned an iconic baseball stadium into a high-speed three-dimensional racetrack we've made it to the gold needs at level five Chase Field four guys are in it no gap 707 Luxy and Vanover each heat is two half mile loops through port to gates position iein whoa Criss crossing the stadium and this course TK is a significant factor it truly is because it's so open the pilots need to focus on carrying momentum through the turn more than carving tight lines the smoothest pilots here will rise to the top the switchback has been a key differentiator here all night take us through this critical maneuver the switchback is a complex double u-turn requiring precise timing the goals are minimize distance flown while maximizing exit speed from each you turn the keys to the first u-turn are making a single turn while staying as close to the diamond gate as possible pilots pitch up slightly as they roll and yaw right they must time the turn so that they line up the diamond and square gates in a straight line the keys to the second u-turn are beginning to turn prior to the square gate and a peck seen as close to the gate as possible they pitch up slightly as they roll right with minimal yaw if they don't line up the two gates in the first u-turn they must make additional corrections which is slower if they don't begin the second u-turn early enough they extend their line path the square gate which is slower mistiming either turn causes them to hit the diamond gate or the square game if you want to win a level you need to first make the golden e and now we know our four pilots and their colors nuf in purple gap 707 yellow flux e the swatch pilot red and white and Vanover the flashing disco drum final [Music] winner-take-all fantastic start from Doug he's got climbing to the sky gate gab and fan over chasing him look at these guys ducks in a row Craig not doing a great job keeping in that day though as he just wonderfully dropped down little switch back to the first time now I'll be able to accelerate out of the square gate but gap is keeping it blue there on the right side of the course around the right-field pole back to the Pentagon gate and the start of last number to sub in the lead these guys behind a bit of a bobble there goes down he's blows again gap has closed the distance to switch back yet again gaps running at a time there was a bump that drop snap back the sweeping left Oh [Applause] fantastic launch off the podium getting to the front of the group and not letting go a tiny bit knocks back the wind and sends a message of his own now first off congratulations on a tremendous accomplishment can you put it into words what does it mean to you it means everything getting these points getting real points up on the board it shows these other pilots that I have what it takes still to stand up there on the podium at the end of the season and come back for another year before now what was holding you back that you overcame on this level I think it was a combination of things I wasn't getting a ton of practice I was in my own head a lot I wasn't thinking very positive I was dwelling on all of these negative things it would happen to me during a race and this time I just let it all go and just kept on flying my race so how do you take that how do you bottle it up and use it for the future levels that we have in front of us it's just an extreme confidence boost I've shown the guys hey I'm here I'm staying and you're not getting rid of me well once again congratulations you earned every bit of it thank you the overall season standings are getting interesting Vanover misses his first podium of the year but remains on top with 13 points gab is now just three points back with 10 and with this win now moves into third with six level six here in Phoenix would give the pilots another shot at season points with huge implications in the world championship title race next the drone racing league brought to you by aliens global leaders in asset management investments and insurance by the US Air Force aim high and by swatch welcome back to our review of the first six levels of the 2019 TRL Allianz World Championship season getting set for Heat number four of our finals here at level six Phoenix fan overs one two heats he's at the gold meet that's why training for gap just won the last teeth joining Vanover in that gold deep well I'm not gonna lie not do a little stretch a little bit less stress there by yourself winning Heat no I I'll give you a bit of confidence you know right no way to get by yourself people don't like being my team so anything that just gave me more confidence knowing I can make that make up that time on you out of all people I stay the last one Gabon Vanover have really separated themselves from the others here tonight TK what are you seeing that they're doing better you know that's a good question I don't think it's one thing in particular more everything all of them know the track inside and out and the best line through each element but Vanover and gab are executing those lines almost perfectly for two laps when the others make even a small misstep at any turn they fall behind they're up and away the left turn to the Pentagon Kade Vanover with the hole shot through the watch be built slime bin over in front cap 707 and yellow and jet conserve that was an aggressive turn out of a swash beat by gathers like two different clothes that distance to the top and he's always great on this drop here he goes this is the switchback Vanover gab jet they exit but gab stay right there with it over that's usually where he flips a gap in get this ringing a little wide out of that switchback that slows it down over there see this watch me so climb again jab is going for it there he goes on the drop he excels here and it's proving it right there gab momentarily passing Dan over but the swing back again gap slightly in front [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank God dang it I don't know how to catch you guys that's your bedtime or what yeah it's true good job good racin gab how fun is it for a pilot of your level to race at this level you know this is the stuff that we all dream about we all think when we go out on the field let's say we practice together we'll get it heat like that and then we go to the next one and then nothing happens again it's one of those you just get one of them but we just did two of them in a row so I think we got something going here it's time for the golden heat flux e's last-second victory heat six means he joins Vanover and gap the stakes are huge if Vanover wins this heat he will have enough season points to clinch the world championship title if gabber flux ii win the entire season podium frame he determined in level seven all three away game over first to the Pentagon cave he'll be first to the slicing oh yeah kiss the swatch gate and is done fan over through the sky gate luck she's gonna have to play catch-up now into the switchback set up van over this is one of those maneuvers confidence in every heat well flux he's in a bad position here he's got to play catch up but that's not good for him if he could do this on every single one of these turns and changes a little bit of ground he can have his fighting chance he needs to figure it out remember these guys know each other's flying very well it was camped ban over weeks ago where they were together spending hours upon hours each other's tricks in treats but you have to believe but over the lightness [Music] unbelievable one little mistake like that costume give that to van over the crown has been passed all hail band over the season is his captain VIN over finally some smiles but also a lot of emotion that we saw just now what does it mean to be not just the level champion but now the world champion of the 2019 season I'm doing this for my dad and I love you that like this is for you you were a world champion and you inspired me it's this is this is for him this is for you he's watching up in heaven and my lord and everything just the support and everything this is hopefully the first of many but for me right now this is just probably the best one in my entire life I feel like I've I've served a purpose that I maybe can't grasp just yet but I hope these guys see it and I really hope that they see the motivation the passion in my faith and everything behind the scenes because that's also why I'm here I'm here to serve Him and not to serve myself or other people it's incredible you've racked up quite a trophy case here in your rookie season looking back at what you've accomplished what are you most proud of just my improvement in my dedication I've really focused so hard on this season trying to be the best pilot and that was it and just trying to not just be the best pilot for myself and my Lord and my dad who I'm serving but to show all these other guys that hard work and show everyone at home I was I wanted to be on D role and I put in the work to be here and then they get to world champion you can do it yourself that's what I'm here to show and that's my biggest proud moment is that anyone can do it it doesn't matter what obstacles what people call crazy that's great because I want to prove crazy to be right and that's just incredible it's so much to take in right now on behalf of the fans congratulations let's go to the overall season standings Vanover with that win now has a seven-point lead over gab 707 which means he has clinched the season win Vanover is your 2019 world champion

2020.10.07 17:31 Mark-Leyner Susan Strehle's "Fiction in the Quantum Universe" (1992) and William Gaddis - Part 3

Part 1
Part 2
Clinging to the Material World
Strehle argues that at first, JR appears static because most characters do not undergo transformations and they are fixated on cultivating “the stasis of objects”. They find change or the suggestion of change repulsive and flee – although of course they do change: clothes, jobs, partners and they age, get sick, experience accidents, and die. The novel’s starting point is the word, money. It nearly ends with, “. . . why can’t people just shut up and do what they’re paid for!”. In between, most of the novel’s schemes are concerned with stealing, earning, investing, controlling, winning, spending, borrowing, and attempting to collect as much money as possible. The novel’s titular character, JR, for instance, creates a business empire and the attendant wealth, but he never bothers to buy new sneakers or even replace his filthy handkerchief.
Most of the other characters do exchange money for things – most often, mechanical things. They are meant to be status symbols but often, they work poorly or destructively, i.e. – the mechanical letter opener that tears mail to pieces rather than simply effortlessly opening it. In fact, most of the collective impulses are thwarted by destruction, objects are lost, broken, or rendered worthless. Thus, Gaddis repudiates the hoarding impulse of his characters who seek to define meaning through collections of objects. Although many characters display thrift and repair or protect various objects, Strehle argues that their actions are not redemptive and are driven by a sense of responsibility to the material world – a veneration for things that leads to the decadent materialism derided throughout the text. Ultimately, she argues that these redemptive actions are often undone, things fall apart, and that this demonstrates the folly expending energy to serve matter, rather than to create value. The argument is summed up in the following passage,
“Gaddis’s characters end by imitating the things they value, as if identity were material. Not only do they cultivate a sense of self in and through their clothes, rings, cars, and other goods, but they also aspire to the “thingly” status of these goods. In a seedy automat, J R and the young Hyde admire a woman who performs with mechanical efficiency (113); Donny DiCephalis wraps himself in cords and plugs into outlets throughout the novel (56). A shift from himness to itness occupies John Cates, who, like Pynchon’s lady V., undergoes a series of bodily transplants. His companion Zona Selk considers having Cates declared nonexistent. “He’s nobody, he’s a lot of old parts stuck together he doesn’t even exist he started losing things eighty years ago [. . .] now look at him, he’s listening through somebody else’s inner ears those corneal transplants God knows whose eyes he’s looking through, windup toy with a tin heart” (708). The pursuit of mechanical thinghood is really a pursuit of immortality; while Cates implants a “tin heart”, other characters emulate automata in a futile effort to evade time: their repetitions of words, phrases, conversations, gestures, and actions suggest the automatic responses of atemporal machines. Like Pynchon, Gaddis examines the impulse to defy death by denying life.”
In another passage, Strehle notes, “Since their materialism leads characters to covet the made and costly, they inevitably discount the natural and free.” One exception is intimate relationships, however, these are also commodified and exchanged rather than passionate and loving. The characters are attempting to cultivate the Protestant ethic – where no thing or action has value unless it makes a profit. The deeper psychological value of this ethic is the exclusion or concealment of the temporal flux, which can only conclude with individual death, a conclusion each character and indeed, the culture is desperate to avoid. Strehle argues that Gaddis identifies the Protestant ethic as a significant source for the decadent materialism that pervades American culture. Time is objectively measured and valued in terms of profit, production, and ultimately – money. Election (as opposed to preterition) is demonstrated by “good” works, i.e. – profitable works in the world and material blessing naturally follows. (Note – Strehle doesn’t explicitly mention this, but since her work was published in 1992, the extreme perversion of this idea manifested by the “prosperity gospel” has metastasized among a nontrivial American population.)
Strehle notes, “If one approaches work as the single definitive sign of election (or source of worth) and then finds only trivial and degrading work to do, the only way to justify one’s existence is, indeed, to “make a million dollars”; this is, in brief, the story of J R, whose compulsion “to find out what I’m suppose to do” leads to his ruthless pursuit of money (661). With Ben Franklin’s worldly suggestions as his subtext (like Gatsby, J R keeps a list of rules for success {647]) and with Horatio Alger as his model, J R reenacts the American rags-to-riches myth. But as J R’s initials suggest, he only emulates his elders, and virtually every character in the novel is, like J R, caught up in some form of the virulent Protestant economy.”
She concludes this section with a meditation on the role of Fathers in the novel:
“On the first page of the novel, Anne Bast recalls a story about ‘Father’s dying wish to have his bust sunk in Vancouver harbor, and his ashes sprinkled on the water there, about James and Thomas out in the rowboat, and both of them hitting at the bust with their oars because it was hollow and wouldn’t go down, and the storm coming up while they were out there, blowing his ashes back into their beards’ (3). Indeed, this hollow figure who cannot be buried, whose remains cling to his sons, might stand for all of Gaddis’s fathers – as, in a grotesque communion near the end of The Recognitions, Wyatt Gwyon eats bread baked with his father’s ashes. Rather than trying to sink their father’s memory, in fact, most characters perpetuate it: J R finds a surrogate father in Cates; Edward Bast in Crawley and Duncan; Reuben in James Bast; Gibbs in Schramm, and so on.”
None of the characters, “. . . interrogates the authority of the past. This veneration for the father and the past expresses, once more, these characters’ longing to escape time and change: all become good “juniors” in Gaddis’s text.”
As a note – ashes blown into beards appears near the climax of the Coen Brother’s, “The Big Lebowski” and consumption of a father’s ashes appears in Todd Phillips’s, “Due Date”. In a more bizarre case, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards claims to have snorted his father’s ashes in some form of “tribute”. My point here is that the richness of both The Recognitions and JR find gags, jokes, ideas from each novel replicated and referenced in later art, and even life. Whether by design or serendipity, it’s hard to say.

2020.10.05 15:09 origamidreaming I am 33 years old making $335,000, live in London, and work as a lawyer

This is my first MD, a little scary! I've been reading Refinery29 for ages and found this group after the disappointing, fake lawyer MD from "Salt Lake City".
Section One: Assets and Debt
I'm single so all amounts are my own, although I've had help from my parents at various points in my life (which I'll note) and I'm very lucky to also have them to support me if life goes completely to the gutter. Everything in this diary is converted into USD and rounded (to the nearest cent for the diary, but nearest $1k more generally) for simplicity using google's exchange rates when I was writing this over the last week.
Section Two: Income
On income progression, I've been working as a lawyer for 10 years:
Section Three: Expenses
Section 4: Diary
DAY 1 SUNDAY - $33.50
I wake up at 7 am . . . My biological clock in COVID times is all sorts of messed up, and I feel like I've been sleep deprived for months. Doggo hears me moving in bed and jumps up for a 15 minute cuddle. I then put on a coat and take her outside for a bathroom break. I feed Doggo and make a cup of tea for myself and then go back to bed.
By bed, I mean I scroll through IG and the news for an hour. I doze off eventually and then wake up at 10:30 for a second cuddle session. I finally get dressed while listening to NPR's Consider This. I'm 4 episodes behind, it's the perfect start to the morning. I make avocado toast with a fried egg at 11:15.
I head out to walk Doggo for an hour at noon and regret it 15 minutes in. London has skipped Fall, it feels very much like Winter and I'm not prepared. By the end of the walk, I'm sniffling behind my mask. I treat myself to a blueberry financier from my local cafe ($4.72). I eat half of the cake at home with a second cup of tea, decaffeinated this time, and also eat a box of cherries. Doggo eats her lunch and then passes out.
I spend most of the afternoon decluttering, I go through and organise, swapping out seasonal clothes. I have been watching the Home Edit on Netflix and am obsessed!!! I'm thinking of placing an IKEA/Amazon order for "Product" but hold off. Amazon delivery guy drops off a parcel at 3 pm -- I bought a plant saucer and a trio of pots last week. I've been growing some plants on my patio but now that it's getting cold, need to bring them all in. I spend an hour repotting some herbs. I place a second order for the pots and saucer as they're perfect for the remaining herbs ($28.78).
At 6:30, I make myself some skillet pizza with a side salad for dinner, and eat while addressing some weekend work emails for about 30 minutes. I hop into the shower at 7:30 and spend my evening with a face mask and the Home Edit. Doggo gets her last walk at 9 pm, and then we head to bed. I have a hard time falling asleep so I light a candle, move the phone to another room, and lie in bed for hours.
DAY 2 MONDAY - $0
I wake up at 7:30 am and take Doggo out, make myself a cup of tea, and eat the leftover cake along with strawberries for breakfast. I start work at 8 am, replying to emails and reviewing memos until 10, when I have an hour call with one of my direct reports.
After the call, I take Doggo out to the park for an hour. I keep an eye on emails, but nothing too exciting comes up as I work for an American company and it's still early there. When we get back, I heat up leftover pizza for lunch at noon and dive back into work. I start a marathon of calls from 1:30 pm to 4 pm, and then finally turn to other work.
The Amazon delivery guy arrives at 5pm, I take a 30 minute break to repot the remaining herbs before the sun sets, and then head back to work until 7 pm. I feel lazy so make myself avocado toast, peel an orange and eat a spoon of nutella for dinner. I spend the evening listening to the How I Built This podcast and watching the last episode of The House Edit. I'm in bed by 10.
DAY 3 TUESDAY - $46.27
I wake up at 7 am and take Doggo out -- big mistake not wearing a raincoat, so we make it as quick as possible. Doggo gets her breakfast while I make a cup of tea and eat two portions of strawberry yogurt. I work from 7:30-8:15, and then head out to take Doggo to the vet. I'm back home at 9:30, but sadly without Doggo who has been having leg issues this year. The vet recommended that she stay with them until the afternoon for x-rays. Thank goodness for pet insurance, the x-rays cost $940 but it is all covered by the insurer as I've already met my deductible.
I work from 10 to 12 before taking a quick 15 minute break to make some noodles (Thai inspired peanut noodles -- I made the sauce last week and defrosted overnight). I eat my meal while browsing Reddit and various blogs, and then spend another 15 minutes vacuuming the flat (Doggo sheds!).
I restart work at 1 pm until I pick Doggo up at 5 pm, she's lethargic from being sedated and the vet recommends booking her in for surgery (another £2,600 covered by the insurer). I join a call from 6-7 and then finish addressing other work emails that are time sensitive.
I stop work at 8 pm and let my friends, family and the dog walker know about Doggo's upcoming surgery next week. I'm stressed and decide to place an order on Glossier for cloud paint, balm dotcom and stretch concealer. I use a 10% coupon and it comes out to $46.27. I wash up, browse through the news, and go to bed at 10:30 pm.
DAY 4 WEDNESDAY - $59.02
I wake up at 7:30 am and take Doggo out, the morning is lovely today (bright blue skies, air nice and crisp!). I work for 45 minutes from 8 while eating granola with milk, and then head to the farmers’ market for some groceries. Meanwhile, the dog walker comes by at 9 to take Doggo to the park (cost is included in my monthly expenses). I ended up buying daikon, coleslaw, brioche rolls, pork ribs, roast turkey, gouda, and salmon ($26.97).
I come back from grocery shopping to see a delivery of flowers ($32.05). This is a subscription service where I get a delivery about once every three weeks (approximately how long they. last), but I’ll skip if I don’t like the arrangement. I used to not buy flowers, but it's given me such joy this year. This weeks’ arrangement includes pale pink roses, snowberries, bright pink alstroemeria, purple irises, white lisianthus and eucalyptus.
Doggo comes back from her walk, and she goes to sleep while I restart work. I do a load of laundry at noon, take a 30 minute yoga break, and then make myself a sandwich with coleslaw, turkey, sliced cheese (thank you to the CupofJo blog for the idea, delicious). I finish off the rest of the nutella. Doggo also gets her lunch and a bit of playtime. I dive back into work at 1 pm after putting my clothes in the dryer. I'm on back to back calls from 4 to 6, and then end my workday at 6:30. I make myself some ramen spruced up with bok choi and salad onions from my indoor herb garden.
I decide to shower early at 8 and then watch Schitt's Creek while reading up on the news (last night's debate, omg). I decide to go to bed at 10:30 and pop Doggo into her crate and try locking the door. It's a disaster, she cries and whimpers until 2 am. I wasn't expecting it to be this bad: she used to sleep in a locked crate as a baby and, even as an adult, alternates between sleeping in the crate (unlocked) and on my bed. Once she has her surgery, she'll need to sleep in a locked crate for two months while her legs heal as jumping will undo all the good work. It's devastating and I can't sleep either, I think I fall asleep at 3 am but who knows when.
DAY 5 THURSDAY - $123.76
I'm exhausted but my body wakes up at 7 am anyways. Doggo is quite happy and seems not exhausted at all. I take her for a short walk, give her breakfast, make myself some tea and get to work at 7:30 -- I'll nap later if I can. I catch up on emails, review some documents, and look at candidate resumes for a role that's open on my team. I break at 9:30 to fry an egg to eat with toast and a second cup of tea. I take a 45 minute call at 10, which results in a massive headache (mostly because of the 4 or so hours of sleep, but the call was a mess too). I decide to take Doggo out so we can both get some fresh air.
At noon, I get a delivery of plants that I purchased last week! This makes me so happy and motivated to work again. If anyone else is as plant obsessed, I bought Zamioculcas zamiifolia, polyscias fabian, sansevieria moonshine, clusia princess and a new pot. I take a break at 1 pm to eat a lunch of daikon soup and ribs (leftover, defrosted from last week), which watching Criminal on Netflix. It's the French series, I've already finished the UK set. I also feed Doggo her lunch inside her crate with the door locked, a little bit of whimpering but so much better.
Back to work at 2 pm with back to back calls from 2:30-4:30 (way too many calls in COVID times). I finish work at 6:30 after my last call is cancelled. At 7 pm, the doorbell rings again -- my groceries are here! I order online once every two weeks and supplement with weekly trips to the farmers market. Today's grocery bill is $82.27 for baby wipes (for Doggo), toilet paper, hand gel x2, shampoo x2, kleenex x2, toothbrush heads, decaf tea bags, soy sauce, chilli oil, sugar, peanut butter, rice noodles, tomatoes, onions, chicken thigh, melon, salad onions, pizza, mandarins, green beans, bananas, grapes, broccoli.
After unpacking my groceries, I buy a box of roasted cauliflower and greek salad from the cafe downstairs for dinner ($9.67). I place an order for Doggo from Amazon: some powder for small cuts to add to our first-aid kit and a raised dog bowl (supposedly better for her spine) totalling $31.82. We do some training in the evening (tricks for treats!) so she's nice and tired, cuddle in the bed while watching Schitt's Creek, and then I place her into the crate (minimal crying for about 10 minutes tonight, thank you Doggo).
DAY 6 FRIDAY - $45.61
I wake up at 7:30 am, take Doggo out quickly and start a laundry cycle for my sheets, duvet cover and pillow covers. At 8 am, the cleaner comes to do a much better job than I can (included in monthly expenses) and also makes my bed (is anyone else useless at putting duvets in duvet covers?). I give Doggo her breakfast, make myself a cup of tea and I eat some leftover carrot cake. I work from 8:30 to 11, when the cleaner leaves, with a break in between to put the laundry into the dryer.
Doggo gets a 15 minute walk (it's pouring!) and then we both eat lunch. I make an arugula salad, with tomatoes, mozzarella and mint & balsamic dressing. I read Lean In for an hour while eating. Yes, I know I'm late to the book club but was curious after seeing all of the comments!
I restart work at 12:30 and end at 5:30 to quickly walk Doggo in the rain and then play with her. I leave her with dinner at 6 and then take an Uber to Boy's place (it's our 4th date). I've been disappointed with Londoners on the tube as many people don't wear masks or don't do it properly so prefer to walk or take Ubers even though it's obviously more expensive.
Boy has been cooking up a storm, we polish off a bottle of wine and then some more, a tomato salad and pasta with lots of cheese. I Uber back right before midnight ($45.61 for two Ubers), I'm not concerned about the Uber turning into a pumpkin but I would never leave Doggo by herself. Sorry Boy (and boys generally), I don't do sleepovers without Doggo. Doggo is the happiest girl and I'm feeling pretty good myself, so we go on a long midnight walk and then some playtime at home. I'm not in bed until 2 am.
DAY 7 SATURDAY - $17.96
I wake up at 10 am and Doggo and I head to the park. The skies don't look great, so we keep the walk relatively short and choose not to take a detour into the farmers market. It's the right decision as it starts pouring at around 11 once we're home. Doggo gets her lunch, while I make myself a BLT with some grapes. I then spend an hour catching up on work emails that came in Friday (evening London time, but business hours America time). I draft a couple of responses so they're ready to go, but wait to send them until Monday. Weekend emails are the worst.
I text Boy to say thank you again for the dinner, we flirt a bit and then I get on a call with a group of my best friends at 2 pm to catch up. We all turn the video off because of Zoom fatigue but just hearing their voices is perfect. I spend the afternoon reading up on surgery aftercare for Doggo and place an order for a cold press and an inflatable pet collar that looks soft so that Doggo won't need to wear the cone of shame ($17.96). I then finish Lean In and also go through Criminal (France) on Netflix.
At 7 pm, I start making dinner (salmon with honey and sriracha plus a side salad) and call my brother in Vancouver in the evening to catch up over my dinner and his breakfast. I shower early, put on a face mask, and watch When Harry Met Sally. Doggo joins me during the movie to enjoy some belly rubs, takes her last walk and then we're both in bed by 10:30.
TOTAL SPEND: $326.12
This week wasn't too unusual apart from Doggo's costs. Apart from food and treats when we're running low I rarely buy anything for her anymore as we've accumulated a ton of toys, leads, etc. Pre-COVID times I spent more money on transport and food (as I used to eat out for my lunch almost every day in the office), but less money on home and health (I have bought so many plants and spruced up some of my decorations). The beauty purchase is a once a month cost, but I would spend that money in other categories other weeks.

2020.10.05 10:37 hadesneoseoul falling in love to someone who deems you attractive

one fine winter two years ago (feb19), i visited my best friend who studies/lives abroad in Vancouver. coincidentally, it was my first time traveling alone and my first time visiting canada (it’s 1000% worth the trip, regardless of my story). coincidentally coincidentally, it was also the first time i’d given dating apps (tinder) a try.
one fine evening, close to the end of my trip, i got a match that i really fancied (im a bit picky), he was funny and we had chemistry going, so 2 days later we go on a date. he says “this hidden/bohemian pub”. neat, im into that. but he’s v (2h late, so i strike a conversation with this early 40s gal going to vietnam for some spiritual cleansing trip or whatever. i tell her about him and she’s like “yeah if you need a safe place to crash, text me”. cool. he finally gets there, just as tipsy as i am. i tell him about myself.. but dude we’re just touching legs like crazy, sparks flying and shit. so, we get out of there after our first beer. (if you’ve ever been to Van, you’ll know that the Skytrain shuts down v early and it’s almost 11 and i have to take that train to get “home”). i tell tinderdate “hey i think i have to crash at yours” sure, he says. so, i give vietnam a wink and we leave. he studies at U of Toronto, but was raised here. so we’re going to his parents’ and he lives in kerrisdale (look it up). cool.
the bus ride was spicy. we’re making out by the bus stop, we go to the back of the bus and we’re making out. intensely. he’s almost on top of me and we’re v close to taking everything off each other..while 4 other people are 2 seats away from us (bus had seats that faced each other). im lowkey ashamed, but at the same time kinda proud (sorry random canadians!).
we arrive at his and (/redacted/). after we shower, we’re spooning and he says “you’re really handsome” ....
this was the first time in life (i was 19 then) that anyone had referred to me as “attractive” (not even my mom haha). before that, i had just assumed that i was ugly and bye bye. in retrospect, i now recognize that i had shit self-esteem and could not separate myself as “myself”. yet, although i was plastered (and so was he, i suspect), i will never forget that night. the butterflies it conjures, the nostalgia, the way we looked into each others’ eyes for the longest time, his caresses, and our deep conversations.
That month in Van spun oxygen into my life. it’s crazy how a single trip can literally give someone direction and change their life.
apparently i’m quite an attractive guy, apparently people enjoyed being around me and apparently i was worth a whole lot more that i’d given myself credit for.
we didn’t see each other again after that night. yet, we kept texting (sometimes sexting) for a few months until, naturally, it died out. yet.. i could not stop thinking about Ca****.
i sexually liberated myself, discovered my likes and dislikes, and grew enough to find a form of bliss. yet, i still kept thinking about that night.
the last conversations we had felt one-dimensional at best. i racked my brains trying to come up with replies (big no no, ik) yet he seemed to have lost interest. my bestie always said he was a fuckboy and even when i texted Vietnam gal, her first impression was “fuckboy/having fun/not serious”. worse still, when i met a me-approved local guy, i felt nothing towards him because i was so intoxicated by C.
so, later last year, i said “fuck it”. i enrolled in a 5-week business course in toronto, because résume-building. but you and i know why i booked the damn flight. so, there i was, en route Tor with no excuse to see him, in a situation were most ppl would’ve quit bc he might’ve already given me enough hints (idk to this day).
i text him. he replies. we start talking. i ask him out. he says “ill let you know”. then, “oh no i can’t” two hours before. we keep talking. i crack and spill my heart out. i tell him the whole thing reaaally transparently.. no drama, just my perception. he says “you’re a great guy but i just don’t have the emotional energy to give you what you want”. i keep pushing for answers and he still gives me answers. eventually we conclude that “you [Ca****] probably could’ve been anyone, but you were there at the right [(wrong?)] time and place”.
this happened on march of this year. and i kinda forgot about it until today. looking back, my emotional intelligence has grown a lot more during quarantine and, today, i wouldn’t have pushed him further after the “i dont have the energy rn”.
it’s strange that i have not felt the same way towards anyone since that one-night stand.. and i have definitely not been shy ;).
it’s also strange how someone could’ve changed my life so much by validating my physical beauty. so it’s really hard to determine if what i felt was legit or an overreaction to the validation i had desire for so long (C being at the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time).
sometimes it’s okay to not fully understand things.
..i was hesitant to post this, but i think it’s part of the process.. and by brandishing it forever on the interwebz, it makes my past feelings/turmoil real.
i think i love you C, but it’s not worth opening that can of worms again when i visit my best friend this third year. i only wish that i feel that feeling again as intensely, but with someone else.
//
thanks for sticking with me and my story. i’ll post a question as to not stick strictly to the flair tehee.
do you believe in beyond-this-world connections or “soul-strings” with certain people??

2020.09.28 04:31 zspacetrucker Is he (38M) still with his ex or dating me?

Me (31F) and him (38M) Context: I met a guy online through social media about 1 year ago. We both work in the music industry. I live in Vancouver, Canada, and he lives in Los Angles, United States. I randomly came across his profile and messaged him thinking he was cute and interesting. I sent him a a couple flirty messages. He messaged me back and told me although he was flattered, he was in a relationship & respects his GF.
Fast forward 6 months. I noice he started following me on social media. About 2 months ago, he messaged me asking how I was doing. We chatted and discussed the pandemic/ quarantine, all that fun stuff. I told him I was feeling alone since I am single. He said he understands what I mean. I assumed this meant he must have broke up with his gf, but I didn’t confirm or ask for specifics.
We’ve been talking everyday the past two months. Starting to get closer and although we’ve never met in person I do feel feelings developing. We have many similar interests & Would be compatible in a relationship. We have made plans to visit each other once the Canadian / USA boarder opens.
The other night I couldn’t sleep and randomly scrolled through his profile. I never had gone to the end of his feed before, and noticed a picture of him and his ex gf from 3 years ago, (same one he was dating). She was tagged, so out of curiosity I clicked her profile...and low and behold her profile picture still has a picture of them together!!!!
I know relationships are complicated if possible they are in the process of breaking up (they were / are together for 5 years). Need advice how do I proceed I assumed since we are talking each day & making plans we were starting to date & felt a relationship developing Should i Ask him straight up? Wwyd?

2020.09.25 23:36 dourdan Rise of Hellion ch5: Norcal

Rise of Hellion ch5: Norcal

Rise of Hellion ch5: Norcal (Barry Pepper fanart fiction inspiration)
previously:

I was pregnant, that much was certain. (The influx of hormones explained a few moments that I'd rather forget.) It all started when Anya and I hitched a ride to Seattle with a van full of stoners, heading to a music festival. My metal legs were in decent, usable shape although the straps had seen better days. I was struggling to keep up with Anya’s able-bodied, human legs, but I was grateful to have her as my friend.
She walked with a sweet, sensual confidence; something that made people want to trust her, to know her. Along the way, we got free cigarettes, food and even money. We met the sexy college-age stoners (three men and two women) in a truck stop in Oregon. I never even had to talk.
I was offered copious amounts of pills, cheap vodka and weed. I tried to take just enough to relax and sleep my way to Washington. But through it all, I started to remember more and more details of my encounter with Noah. Piece by piece, each moment came back to me in the form of the Flower Child (my neon glowing guardian angel) leading me through a series of rusty metal doors. Each door led me to a different part of that night’s conversation. Apparently, I had told Noah about my past sexual abuse, running away from home, and getting my legs blown off: total cringe.
"I feel like I was put on this earth to serve powerful men," said the drunk, past version of me.
"Powerful men?" Noah said with a chuckle. "Like congressmen and shit? Good thing there are no powerful men here, just a bunch of screw ups and good-old-boys." Noah put his arm around me, holding me close. "And you, our newest teammate."
"Really?"
"You were great out there," he said taking another drag off the cigarette. "A real assassin."
I cupped his face, with the biggest smile. "What would you say if I kissed you?" Before Noah could reply I brushed my mouth to his. "Sorry." I was giggling uncontrollably.
Noah smiled sweetly, placing a finger to my cheek. "Do I make you nervous?”
I bit my lip, lost in his eyes. “I feel like a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs."
A jolt of pain blinked me back to reality as my head smashed into the roof of the van. We were flying, falling, eventually crashing. I was already in the back, comfortably wrapped in a blanket, so I was able to punch my way out of the back window. Looking around I could see the van had fallen down a steep cliff, landing on a beach. "Anya!" I shouted, hoping to God she was alive.
I struggled to my feet which was difficult to do with my left leg falling off. Suddenly, two arms grabbed me, pulling me backward towards the water. I tried to scream, but was too injured to fight back, especially when my captor started to pick up speed. This was a human, flesh and blood but he was moving as fast as a car.
So, I just buried my face against the abductor's chest to protect myself from the g-force. We landed on a wooden surface with a thud. I expected to hit my head, but the man carried me like a bride, placing me down carefully on a hospital bed. When I caught my breath, I sat up just enough to look around; somehow, we were on a boat. "Did you just walk on water?" I asked with a forced chuckle.
"Just one of my many superpowers," replied a familiar voice.
"Tony!" I shouted. My body filled with energy, I sprang up, throwing my arms around him.
"I miss you too, kid." Tony returned the embrace, looking over my shoulder. "Yo, Axel."
"Axel's here?" I heard his footsteps before I heard his voice.
"Is the target secure?"
"Affirmative," Tony replied.
"The target?" I asked, suddenly feeling less homesick for my TAC friends.
"Just a formality," Axel said as he patted my arm. "We're glad to have you back."
"Me or just my bionic legs?" Both were still attached but holding on by a thread.
"You would be technically correct," Axel said with a friendly smile. "Your legs are lo-jacked. I'm surprised the Lifers let you keep them." Our fearless leader went to the front of the boat, steering us in the direction of a very noticeable helicopter. "We tracked you to the artic base, that was why we sent the unit in after the battery.”
"Um, what?" I felt like I'd been stabbed in the heart. I was the reason why Noah was in trouble, and possibly dead.
"TAC wanted it's property back, but we wanted you back.”
"Who's we?" The people who love me? Was that what Axel was going to say?
"I for one, and certainly Tony." Axel made it to the pickup point, signaling for the chopper to lower the ropes to attach to my bed.
"Yes, sir," Tony said, taking a seat on my hospital bed. together we were raised up to the cargo hold. Upon reaching the landing pad, the door shut.
I could see where a single pilot was controlling every aspect of the process. The roar of the engine was so loud, speech was impossible, as I found out the hard way. "Where are we going?" I shouted as loud as I could.
"What?" Tony replied.
My throat was already sore, and I didn’t feel like repeating myself. Instead, I simply rested my body while blinking tears from my eyes.
Tony took it upon himself to hold me close, rocking me in his arms like a frightened child. "We're headed to Vancouver, you'll love it there, I promise. I'll be with you every step of the way."
I sobbed, burying my face in Tony's shoulder. Grateful that I somehow heard his words of kindness over the roar of the wind.
He held my hand, giving my fingers a squeeze. I could imagine he was thinking about all the horrible things Anya and Baron had done, how I must be crying out of fear or even pain. He would never in a million years, guess why my heart was broken.
Tony's breath was trembling. Was he cold? Or did he truly care? The very idea seemed so sweet. And that was why I kissed him.
Tony closed his eyes and smiled. Maybe he silently mouthed my name, I wasn’t sure, but I’d like to think so. I placed my hand to his chest. He was wearing body armor, so moved my hand lower, to his belt. I knew the pilot could see us, possibly even heard us, but I didn’t care.
Tony could have stopped me but he didn’t. I’d had sex with beautiful boys like Tony before. He was so open and gentle, possibly a virgin. The idea made me want him even more; I wanted to be the one to make the robot-superhero-boy into a real man.
We held on to each other even after landing in Canada. "I'll give you two a moment," the pilot shouted from his seat. There was other stuff to unload from the back, giving us time to make ourselves presentable.
"Was I your first,” I asked with all the flirty seduction of a teen prostitute who watched too many Disney movies.
Tony laughed awkwardly as he helped me off the cargo ramp. “I still can’t believe that just happened.”
“Yeah,” I muttered. I was a slut; I was a whore, but at least I was the one in control. “I just needed to feel something.”
“Love?” Was he being sarcastic? I couldn’t tell. Yet in that moment he sounded human.
“Sometimes I feel like I don’t know what love is.” Looking into Tony’s dark eyes, I knew my plan; I would learn to love Tony, I would give Dr. Toki the super soldier baby that she wanted.
Which brings me to today.
It had been a little over a week of working out, eating great food and spending time on the beach. I had been feeling a little sick, so I was given a pregnancy test in the form of a urine strip. It was the kind that was supposed to show either one or two lines. It showed nothing, as if I had no female hormones at all. (Apparently that was not uncommon for females who survived trauma.) I was told to return to training; weights, cardio etc. The Vancouver TAC base was a nice enough facility but there was no outdoor gym, not even a track. I would work out with Tony, competitively trying to stay on the treadmill longer (I'd given up on trying to out lift him.)
During our downtime, we were watching cartoons while drinking weird Gatorade mixtures, when suddenly the local news reported a breaking story. “What the hell?” I groaned. “What could be so important that they had to interrupt syndicated reruns of Bob’s Burgers?”
“A team of heavily armored individuals have been attacking parked vehicles in the downtown area.” The camera zoomed in on a masked man wearing Noah’s armor. Was this Noah, was he alive?
I gripped my chest, sinking my nails in to my skin. Was I high? Was I dreaming? I could feel my heart pounding right before I fell forward.
Tony rushed to my side, and stayed with me even as I started vomiting. I went limp in his arms as he carried me to the medical ward.
That was when I was given a blood test, followed by an ultrasound. I was unquestionably pregnant. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep but no sleep came. The last thing I remember was holding Tony's hand.
"Does Tony have access to the third floor of the sub level?" the voice came from everywhere and nowhere.
“What?” The words made no sense given the vast number of buildings on the base. There could even be a sub-terrain lower level I didn’t even know about.
“Never mind,” the echo said with a groan.
I awoke gasping for air. I was no longer in a bed but rather on a rooftop in the pouring rain. I wanted to pull my legs close, in to a fetal position. If only to stay warm, but my prosthetics were gone. “Fuck my life.”
In the distance I could see a human figure; a man walking a large animal, like a lion or a bear. "Noah?" I said in a whisper. What was he? Did he take me from the clinic? Was he going to kill me?
The human figure let go of the animal, before taking a few steps back. The animal made a deep, sickly, inhuman sound but did not advance further. The human groaned, still standing out of view. He moved his hand, striking the creature in the back. The sound was sickening as metal tore through skin.
"Noah, please stop!" I crawled to the injured creature. Clearly it didn’t want to hurt me or anyone. I reached out my hand, the way I would for a stray dog. But once I was close enough to see the creature’s face I screamed. “Oh, dear God.” Even through all the armor and mutilation, I could never forget his blue eyes. “Noah, what did they do to you?”
Noah had deep scars all over his body; arms, shoulders, and back. On his neck was a collar held on by two spikes; one in his throat and another in his spine. The wounds were fresh, he had been bleeding very badly. It was clear he wanted to speak but couldn’t.
“It’s ok, I’m here.” It wasn’t ok, nothing about this was ok. I reached for his hand, but Noah shook his head. There were large metal braces on his hands, strange black spikes that made him look like the Marvel comic character Venom (or a demon from hell.)
Since it was clear Noah had no intention of attacking me, I stayed where I was. But if the restrained beast was Noah, then who was the standing figure? It had to be the infamous Feng, sent on behalf of Kitsune after Anya and I went missing. That made sense. And now I was completely sure I was going to die.
Noah opened his mouth, struggling for breath, “You- will- prevail.” He coughed up blood, his body convulsing. “I’ll never forget you. I could never forget you.”
I wanted so badly to hold him. Maybe I could save him or at least die trying. “I love you…” my breath trailed off. I wanted to vomit or at least scream. What kind of person falls in love with someone they knew for a single night? This isn’t a fucking Disney movie! Yet here I was. I wanted to die.
Noah swallowed hard, causing his throat to spasm as he spoke, “I will die loving you.”
The words cut me to my core. I screamed into the rain, as the standing figure pulled on the leash, dragging Noah away. All that was left of that moment was a streak of blood along the concrete roof.
I rocked back and forth crying. ‘Who was that? Where were my legs?’
"Hard to tell who you can trust," a male voice said from behind me.
"What's stopping me from hurling myself off this roof?”
“I don’t really know,” the voice replied. “The story would continue; Noah, Anya, Baron, etc. It would just be the end for you.”
“Am I the battery? Is this some kind of DaVinci code shit?" I started to scoot backward if only to adjust my weight, and immediately fell off a ledge.
My guardian angel grabbed my arm. “Hey, be careful.” It was the Flower Child but he seemed older, stronger, with a face weathered by time. "Maybe later, after you get rid of the passenger in your womb."
"Are you saying I should get an abortion first?" I asked sarcastically, through tears.
Flower Child chuckled as he took a seat at my side. "You're welcome for saving your life, Miss Nicki.”
"What are you?" I violently jerked my arm away. "Are you even real? Or are you some kind of mash up of every guy I've ever fucked?"
My emotional outburst was met with laughter. "You mean I'm your dream date? Am I your Ken, Barbie girl?"
I shook my head. "You're imaginary. I'm just talking to myself."
"Do you remember the Junior nationals, when you won your first medal?"
"No,” I replied quickly. I remembered; I just didn’t want to continue the conversation with my imaginary friend.
Flower Child nodded and stood up. "The day you won that medal was the day you became something more than a scared little girl."
"Sure." And now my brain was forcing me to remember that day. I had qualified for the vault finals but for whatever reason my coach pulled me from the rotation. No, actually I knew perfectly well why. He wanted to punish me for hiding in the bathroom when getting dressed. He liked all the girls to change in the public hallway, where he could ‘supervise,’ because we were all so disobedient.
I knew that for a fact. I still got dressed and walked out with the rest of the finalists. Right away I was pulled from the rotation. My coach had told them I was unfit to compete, which was clearly a lie since I had no injuries. I told the advocates what was happening; what my coach had down to me ever since I was six. There were tears in my eyes and I knew for a fact my coach would make my life a living hell, but was allowed to vault.
Assuming I was not in the running for a medal, I tried a vault that I had only been allowed to do in practice; The Produnova. For those of you non-gymnasts, it's when you run up to the spring board, and do a mid-air summersault without landing on your head. The legendary Elena Produnova could do two maybe three summersaults before landing. I always thought she looked like a bullet or a cannon ball.
I can remember doing my run, flying higher than I had ever been, and then landing on my feet. Every muscle in my body wanted to fall over, but I held strong. I was going to stick my landing even if it killed me. The audience was silent, in shock, awe and horror. A junior level gymnast was never meant to land The Produnova. I was supposed to be dead, crippled but I wasn’t. I was a performer and I did that vault for myself. After taking point deductions for doing the wrong vault (technical shit,) I got third place. Not that I even got to keep my medal. No one spoke for me, but no one could ever take away what was rightfully mine. But what did I have now?
The Flower Child started to walk backward, into the shadows of the rain storm. “I’ll leave that choice up to you.”
I didn’t scream or cry. in all honesty I didn’t care. He wasn't real, he was just the part of me that needed a good kick in the ass. I needed to find my way off the roof, and I needed to be smart about it. I spent the next few minutes scooting on my hands and my butt, making every movement count (as to not accidently fall to my death.) Eventually I located what was clearly a door.
Balancing on my leg stumps, I could barely reach the door handle. I tightened my core muscles to execute a leap, pulling on the handle with all my strength. It was, of course, locked. At least I had a place to rest my back. I waited until the rain stopped, taking a moment to breathe. "I could really use a rescue from a handsome prince. Or maybe a chubby-cheeked plumber named Mario? Yeah, right."
I suddenly heard a thump on the opposite side of the door, as if something had dropped down (or teleported.) "Hello?" I said with a tap. "Anyone there?" Just as I spoke, the door opened, causing my exhausted body to fall backward into a dark hallway.
I was indoors, that was something. I took a moment to lean back, anticipating my next move. I really needed to find my prosthetic legs (or some kind of replacement) so I wouldn’t have to bruise the shit out of my arms and wrists. Until then I would have to deal with scooting around like a crippled puppy.
I made my way across the hall, down a set of stairs. I wanted to scream for help but there were no security guards or human life of any kind, not even any cameras. The first hallway was lit by a single halogen bulb with a metal door (possibly a fire escape) waiting for me at the end of a short path. I went through, only to find a stairwell with only a single set of stairs going down only a single floor. “What the?”
I made my way down, then across a different hallway. Door after door had been left open, in a very distinct path. Was I being led into a trap? There were no windows, only digital lights that seemed to mark rooms with unintelligible binary numbers.
After a while, I saw a few security cameras (the kind that look like glossy black balls, or eyes, attached to the wall.) Was I being watched? The idea sort of pissed me off. Was I an experiment, a rat in a maze? Before every open door I heard a thud. It was sometimes loud, sometimes soft. The variation lead me to believe it was organic. Someone was physically opening the doors for me; they had a plan, and endgame. And I was just a plastic piece on a checkerboard; only exploring as far as my overlord wanted me to go.
The final door unlocked a server room where dozens of towers were being housed at refrigerated temperatures. The jungle of cords seem to lead to a central point. In the center of the room was a red, open suitcase with wires coming from all angles. It seemed alive, kind of like a digital sea creature. In the middle of the case, where a clam would typically house its pearl, was a small glowing D-cell battery. "The battery?" This was what Kitsune was fighting for; what Noah died for?
Every single tower appeared to be powered from the suitcase. A sound theory until I started to look closer at the plastic cylinder, housing the ‘battery.’ It was freezing cold, except for the areas near ports. That meant I was wrong; the room full of servers were trying to unload the files from the small device (resulting in a massive outpour of energy.) “Wow,” I muttered. “This must be what a Yoda byte looks like.”
My comment caused laughter; a deep, male voice spoke up from just out of my line of sight. “You’re standing in the presence of project Neptune; aka The Battery, one of the modern wonders of the world.”
“The battery is a massive glorified flash drive?” I asked, taking a step back.
"Pretty much. The only person who could have deciphered its contents is long gone."
"Noah? He was guarding it, right? Why didn’t he ever try to open it?”
“I imagine it was for the same reason why you’re not trying to make a grab for it: the damn thing’s more trouble than it’s worth.”
“You didn’t lead me here?” I turned expecting to see the Flower Child. I don’t know why, maybe on some level the voice was similar. “Axel?”
The tall imposing man stood in full camo armor. He crossed his arms, looking at the battery with a sense of nostalgia. "Noah wanted to invent his own creations," Axel said with a sigh. "And, well between you and me, I think he already knew what was on it.”
"Hi,” I said in a squeaky voice. My mind was a mix of sadness, and fear, combined with the physical pain of having walked on my hands for the past few hours. “Am I in trouble?”
“No, but you were being tested.” He picked up his com-radio. “Target is secure, stand down.” He returned his focus to our conversation. “You were taken from the clinic under the veil of bad weather. We had no idea where your assailant had put your body, until you were spotted by the cameras. Clearly someone was tracking you; someone who knew the location of the battery.”
And whoever it was, hoped that a legless teenage girl would be allowed to escape the base with the high-value target. “So, how well did you know Noah or Cronos or whatever?”
“Noah Garrison was a military asset who went AWOL. It’s assumed he suffered a mental break.”
“But you don’t believe that.”
“I knew him before he disappeared,” Axel said with a nod. “He was a genius, a warrior, a friend.”
“I didn’t even know his last name.” I bit my lip, trying not to cry. “I’m just some stupid kid at the zoo who keeps falling head first in to the animal enclosures.” That sounded about right; some were helpful creatures while others seemed to want my blood.
“Had you made a play for the battery you would have had the full force of TAC on your ass, but as it stands, I am of the belief that you are being stalked by the international terrorist known as Faust.”
“Faust?” My entire body went limp. I was now crying uncontrollably and was moments away from vomiting the contents of my empty stomach.
“Lift your arms,” Axel said like a comforting parent. “Not to be disrespectful, but I want to get you reunited with your legs as soon as possible.”
I nodded and he lifted me like a crying toddler holding me close. With his free hand he pushed a button to open a previously unseen side door. Curious, I turned my head just enough to see the massive amount of armed guards.
Axel waved his arm, and the armored soldiers stepped to the side allowing him to pass. I had never felt so safe and so loved.

2020.09.25 16:24 tobleroney69 How are you guys dating during this time?

Have a few female friends and they have been meeting guys off tindebumble pretty easily
But it’s harder for guys (especially us below average looking guys) who can’t get any matches on dating apps
Are you guys still talking to girls in public? No social gatherings so can’t meet anyone through that. Vancouver is already tough on single dudes but this pandemic has brought my dating life to a screeching halt and it kinda sucks

2020.09.23 15:30 CrossingSign Ottawa House Purchase - $900k reasonable?

Hi guys,
I've been in the market to purchase my first home in Ottawa, and I've been stressing about whether I'd be getting myself in over my head with a potential purchase.
The house I'm looking at is listed around low $900k. It's a two year old 5 bedroom custom home in Orleans, with an in-law suite that can be rented. Another plus is the house is a twenty minute walk to the soon to be built LRT stations, and with post-covid traffic, it's only a 17 minute drive to downtown Ottawa (where my office is located).
Dollars wise, I have $300k to use as a down payment. This would mean I would be taking out a $600k mortgage. Talking to my mortgage broker, we were thinking $600k at 1.79% for 5 years fixed.
This would bring the monthly mortgage payment to around $2400.00 a month. Plus utilities, insurance, property tax etc., I'm conservatively estimating $3600 a month to run the house (mortgage included).
Now, I'm a lawyer in Ottawa with the federal government and make $115k a year (including defined benefit pension).
Alone, I think this place is too pricey for me. That being said, the house does have a one bedroom in-law suite that is all legally set up to be rented. My realtor thinks we could get at least $1600 a month if we rented it. If rented, I could probably service the mortgage alone.
The kicker for all of this, and frankly the main reason I'm looking at buying a 5 bedroom home, is that I've met an amazing woman, whom I've been dating for just over 7 months (not long, I know...).
She's a single mom raising a 9 year old boy - he shares one week at mom's house and one week at dad's. She also makes $63k a year and recently purchased a two bedroom condo. We were thinking of renting her condo if we purchased a house together.
Her and I get along swimmingly and we've agreed that moving in together would be sensible since I’m paying a decently high rent (Ottawa rent is nuts). At first I was thinking of something more modest such as a 3 bedroom place.
However, we both would like to have kids and the more we talk about it, the more we keep thinking we'll need the extra room - hence the 5 bedroom house. It seems like if we have kids, it would happen within the next 5 years - my girlfriend is 32.
With the 5 bedroom house, we'd be able to have room for an extra baby or two (in addition to her son) and have sufficient room that our parents could stay and help raise the kids for an extended period of time. Both our parents are retired but neither set live in Ottawa. As such, we really like the idea that we would have extra room for family to stay comfortably when they visit.
So long story short, my girlfriend and I are considering getting the $600k mortgage together. My girlfriend would rent her two bedroom condo at roughly $1600-1800 a month. We would then split the housing costs. Together we take home $9500 after tax each month, so for the time being, the $900k house seems feasible - we seem to be just a tad over the 30% rule.
Another factor is my girlfriend is open and comfortable that we would sign a cohabitation agreement outlining our obligations with respect to the mortgage, her son, the house etc. I would not feel comfortable undertaking this process without her signing such a document.
While I recognize that this home is on the higher end, my worry is that Ottawa prices will keep going the way of Toronto and Vancouver, and that any desirable house we could afford once we're ready to have a baby would be even further away from the downtown core, and potentially the same price or higher.
So after such a long rant, I ask PersonalFinanceCanada if I'm stupid to even be considering this? I'd really like to hear your thoughts. Given the low interest rates and the pace of growth Ottawa is seeing, would we be stupid not to buy now? Or, would we be better off starting more modest and upgrading down the road (when prices might have risen even more)?
I understand there's significant risk given how young our relationship is. On the other hand, my girlfriend and I are in our early to mid thirties so the biological clock is ticking...
TLDR: GF and I take home $9500 a month together. I have $300k saved up for a down payment. We found a home that meets all our needs and has room for potential babies but is $900k (not cheap I know). Given the low interest rates and the pace of growth Ottawa is seeing, would we be stupid not to buy now? Or, would we be better off starting more modest and upgrading down the road (when prices might have risen even more)?
EDIT: Thanks guys for all the great feedback. You've all reaffirmed my gut feelings. Going to need to some do some reflecting but overall, I don't think this place is a smart decision right now. Really appreciate all the great advice and insights. Many thanks!!

LETS GET STARTED
Question 1: Favorite Baseball Player and Why
Dylan
Growing up every day with Chipper and Andruw Jones in the Braves lineup for the first like 15-20 years of my life was special, Chipper in particular. Acuna is catching up fast, though.
I asked for one player though, not your entire Barves lifestory
Bnavis
Jake Arrieta, his rise really mirrored the cubs, and that 2015 season was incredible.
Arrieta can pound a bag of dicks for being absolute shit
Ruairi
Barry Bonds. He was the greatest hitter of all-time and it isn't even up for discussion. He was a hall of famer before the "alleged" steroid use and became the greatest player of all-time after. The man would get one pitch in the strike zone to hit every night and he would hit it for a home run everytime. No batter has ever been feared the way Barry was feared, not even close. Everyone can say they hate Barry Bonds and don't respect him or whatever crap they want to spew out, but the truth is, when he came up to bat, literally everyone stopped what they were doing to see what he would do, and then when he'd hit a massive home run, everyone would be in awe of his insane abilities.
Barry Bonds is lowkey one of my favorite players, this is valid reasoning.
Polelover
David Ortiz. Self-explanatory.
Fuck the Red Sox

Jason Kendall bc he was a leadoff catcher and gritty as hell. He refused to ever sit out a game even though he played such a demanding position.
Kendall was one of my favorite Pirates to watch, glad to see someone else is a big Kendall fan

matt kemp, restored my love of the game. in his prime he was incredible and he seemed to be having a blast playing. oh and i'm hyper vain and he dated rhianna while being the best player in the sport and i think that's cool as fuck.
Kemp should have won MVP over Braun. Fuck Ryan Braun

Frank Thomas? Frank Thomas is just a mythical figure of childhood for me. The 2006 A's were an extremely formative team for my baseball fandom and Frank Thomas was probably the first time a player I was already aware of outside of the A's became relevant to the A's, and having him play for Oakland felt like being blessed by a god. Objectively or statistically there are more dominant hitters than Frank Thomas in history but in my mind he's the most impeccable hitter of all time.
I forgot that Big Hurt was an A. Thomas was a fun player to watch
Cory
Rickey Henderson. Unbelievable talent with a rare skillset, combined with a cool "hometown hero" story, long career, endless mythology and great stories.
Yankees Legend Rickey Henderson

Vladimir Guerrero for teaching me that strike zones are merely suggestions
It's a shame his son took that lesson the opposite way

Mariano Rivera, just a great feeling when he would come into the game and lock it down. ice cold blood in the veins, and a great team player and ambassador for the game.

Oh boy strap in for this one. So it's freshman year of college. I live in the dorms. I'm single and have next to no experience with girls/parties. It's Halloweekend (the weekend of Halloween so very many parties at SDSU). Unfortunately, I was not in a frat so I was not allowed in any frat parties, so I had to party in the dorm. Anyway. My roommate went to his gf football game (she was a cheerleader for a community college 30 minutes away) so I was just hanging out in my room with the door open to talk with anyone from my floor that wanted to hang. This girl from the floor below me (that I had just met a few days ago and showed off my baseball knowledge to in the study room) walks by my room and stops. She says hi and comes in and I'm talking with her. She has a bottle of cranberry juice and vodka and offers me some. Obviously, I accept. She says she has a full bottle of vodka in on her floor and she'll bring it up to party with me. A really attractive girl wants to hangout with me on Halloween while she is dressed up and wants to get me drunk? Hell yea! So she goes down to her floor and I wait for her to come back. But then about 20 minutes have gone by and she has not come back, leaving me to believe she had bailed :(. So I go across the hall to my friends room to drink and play super smash bros. About an hour or two goes by and I've had some shots just vibin on the floor. A few of the girls who went out to a party had come back and I was hanging out with them. Then the girl from the floor below came back with friends and was trashed. She was in our study lounge puking in the trash so I was in there taking care of her and helping her out. I was just rubbing her back and getting her water while holding her hair. There was a weird dude on our floor who was into her also trying to help but it was super weird and uncomfortable with him there because well as I said he was weird and creepy. After an hour, one of my other friends said Chase and Diego were letting people in their room (now these kids didn't talk much to anyone, except Chase. Me and him were boys). So I went over to their room to see what was poppin' because this was a moment of a lifetime. Chase was a little drunk but Diego was smashed and so was his gf. Total in the room it was me, Chase, Diego, his gf, a dude name Kayvon, and two other girls, Leah and Katie. I was just hanging out talking with everyone and then the three girls were talking about french kissing. Leah hadn't ever frenched so the other girls wanted to show her how. So they passed each other around like a bong just frenching it up. I was dumbfounded. This is what college is??? I'd seen videos but I didn't think they were real. Diego was getting super into his gf making out with these two other girls, kinda hyping them up. Once they had stopped frenching, Katie and Leah left the room. Diego started to get the spins and tried to lay down on his bed. Then he vomited on himself. Me, already experienced with vomit in the evening, tried to help him out and get him up and to the bathroom or at least the trashcan. I did what I could but then his gf was acting all crazy and yelling at me to get out of the room, so I did. I returned to the cute drunk girl on the couch, as I told her I would be gone for just a few minutes (it was really about 20-30). She was super excited to see me again. At that point, she asked me to watch the World Series with her, as the Mets and Royals were going to play Game 5 (I believe) on the Sunday (the next day). I told her of course I would and that I'd be watching in that very study lounge. After a little while longer, I told her she needed to go to bed so I walked her down to her room while the weird creepy dude followed us. I wasn't going to let him walk her to her room because frankly I didn't trust the dude. Got her to her room, said good night, and that was the end of that. I went back to my room and told my roommate and his gf about the eventful night I had. Jumping back to earlier in the story, cute girl said she had returned to my room about 30 minutes later but she couldn't get the vodka from her floor because some dudes had taken it. I had left my room at that point so she ended up going out to the party instead since I wasn't there. I did end up dating that girl for a decent amount of time, but that's for a different survey.

Frosh year. My roommates and I had a couple dorm floor mates who either only have weekday meal plans, or no meal plan at all. So we started casually stealing them some non-perishable goods to last them over the weekend. Through natural progression, this slowly turned into us creating an entire klepto organization that eventually fed most of our dorm house. We had a few tricks. One was bringing sports bags in with us - they would make you check backpacks at the door, but since sports bags might have expensive equipment, they let you take them in. So we'd just stuff them full of gallon bags of cereal, bagels, etc. Our dining hall had a patio area, where at night, you could see in from the outside, but not vice versa. We would load up our plates with one type of food, grab a gallon or two of milk, a tray of cookies, etc., saunter out to the patio, bag/pack everything up, and then toss it over the railing to our Outside Man down below, who would then take it back. At the end of the year, the dining hall had a program where you could return anything you "walked off accidentally" with with no repercussions, so we went to collect and tally any cups/bowls/plates/silverware we'd liberated, and found ourselves with two full boxes of stuff. Fearing *some* sort of repercussions from the sheer volume of stuff, we waited until the DH was closed one night, climbed over the railing, and left the boxes on a patio table.
This is amazing

Well, since my brother and I played baseball year round from elementary school through high school, we didn't take many/any vacations. So I will have to say the only real vacation I've taken is my trip to Texas a few weeks ago. It was amazing getting to see my best friend with our other best friend. Shot real guns for the first time. Went to the beach a couple of times and the water was so warm, it was amazing. Had Texas BBQ and it was to die for. It was super cool being in a somewhat small town since I've grown up in San Diego/Temecula for my whole life and haven't lived in a farm-like town. It was a super cool experience and I would easily risk getting coronavirus to do it again.

my favorite 'vacation' ever was actually recent. i dogsit for my sister sometimes when she goes somewhere and get to spend a week or so getting paid to relax at her apartment in san francisco with her dog and drinking and eating good food. it's nice because it's not touristy, i'm not staying at a hotel or anything, it's more like dipping my toes into living in a big city for a week or two and then getting to return to my normal life afterwards. my 'favorite vacation' was when i was there for over a week last year just chilling with no responsibilities other than taking care of her dog

pay the minor leaguers, institute a salary floor, institute something resembling a RFA system instead of arb, ban Rob Manfred from baseball idk I'm tired
Go back to bed bud
Pole
Overhaul the free agency system to disincentivize service time manipulation. Add a salary floor for teams.

Question 5: You have been signed by the WWE! Congratulations! What is your In Ring Name, Gimmick, and Finisher
Wharble
Thiccums, whatever vince gives me, and either the spear or the clothesline from hell
Show some creativity and own your own gimmick. Jobber status for you
Pole
I am The Ogre. I come out in full Shrek cosplay. My finisher is the GET OUT OF MY SWAMP.
:corynod:
Iama
Wrath-Hog Bounty Hunter Bearhug Life Force Squeezer
So do you hunt other wrestlers? Are you a hunter for an authority figure? As of now you are a Jobber
Bnavis
just give me minus points for this
SAY NO MORE, -3 BALLS
Jiggy
Chicken Bryan Kane's little brother, thus making me the Undertaker's grandson The Carraba's Crusher - honestly it'd just be ember moon's eclipse bc it's the coolest shit
Only issue, Kane is already Undertakers brother so you would also be Undertakers brother. That said maybe we can bring Taker out of retirement for a one off with you
Ruairi
Ring Name: The Notorious Ruairious. Gimmick: I am a Northern Irishman who uses a wicked head butt to stun and knock out opponents. I have swagger, but am very humble. I throw off my opponents by complimenting their bodies rather than trash talking them. Finisher: I get the opponent on the ground and do a jig over them, as my kicks knock them unconscious.
This is a dope gimmick, would likely book you to face Sheamus for 3 months before going for the WWE Title.
Rose
Ring name is Anne Phibian, my finisher is a Frog Splash and my gimmick is that i am extremely into frogs and i brutally beat down opponents and share Frog Facts with the audience on the mic while they are incapacitated
Instant top heel in the Women's division. Would book you to face Charlotte Flair at Wrestlemania for the Women's Title.
Cory
The Mortician (Cory *Graves*). My gimmick would be crawling my up through the bottom of the ring to start each match. We would then have to wait for the mat to be repaired before beginning the match. Finisher: The Scalpel - I run back and forth between the ropes a few times, gaining momentum, eventually bouncing off, going into a horizontal pencil dive motion, and kicking my opponent square in the chest.
I can see some good feuds between you and The Fiend Bray Wyatt. Could be a good wrestlemania match.
Dylan
Bitch, I'm Big Pepsi I'm sponsored by Pepsi Co. to deliver the sweet taste of Pepsi products to the world, BY FORCE The Baja Blaster - I yeet a full cup of MTN DEW Baja Blast (tm) into my opponent's eyes before hitting them with a shoryuken from street fighter
I dig it. Will book you as a main eventer before having you job to Roman Reigns and then banish you to the midcard forever
Bgro
My ring name is "El Ratoncito Miguel" which translates to "The Little Rat, Miguel". My gimmick is that I always pretend I'm not actually there to fight, I'm just lost and looking for directions. I insist way beyond a humorous amount of time that I'm really not a wrestler and you must have me mistaken and how do you get to Union Street. Then, when everyone's going home and the lights are turned off, that's when I attack. My finisher is called Open-Face Slap, where I run to one side of the ring and then charge full speed at you and open face slap you.
Instant Top Chicken Shit Heel. You can win the WWE Title on a fluke before losing it at Mania to someone like Daniel Bryan

bold of you to assume I'd make it out of a societal collapse
Wonderful spirit Wharble
Pole
Hoard some precious resource so I can trade it for other things that I need.
Smart
Iama
the world is my oyster
But what are you doing to survive
Bnavis
kill myself, i'm not a fool. i wouldn't survive a day in the wild
Just excellent effort from Bnavis
Jiggy
honestly i wish i had a nice plan for you but i know i wouldn't make it. just hangout with my gf for as long as possible and do enough mdma to forget about our impending doom
Understandable
Ruairi
I have a co-worker who has a full survival shelter with many guns. I go to him to survive.
Good move
Rose
i don't believe in my ability to survive alone in an apocalyptic scenario so i would determine if i'm reasonably close to a costco. if i think i'm close enough i believe a society of about 200-300 people could survive in a barricaded costco for several months at least without issue, and i will try to get a footing there. if i can't make it to something like that i will seek out the strongest most prepared looking person in my neighborhood and pray they show mercy.
Good to have a plan
Cory
Hoard gasoline and water (a la The Immortan Joe from Mad Max: Fury Road). If that doesn't work out, I would travel from settlement to settlement, bard-style, recanting happenings from neighboring settlements and regaling folks with song.
That man making the best of a bad situation
Dylan
Go to the basement of the newspaper office downtown. Literally nobody ever goes there, and there's no easy way down there without a pass. Also has a showeshittespace. Also has a secret tunnel to the building across the street if I need to bail.
Not bad
Bgro
Now that society has collapsed, I work as a software developer to survive.
In a post-apocalyptic society I dont think we will need software

Everyone gets a ball for leaving some awesome recipes.
Question 11: What is your happiest memory?
Wharble
that's an incredibly personal question that I will not answer because it will make me emotional!
Ok
Pole
that one time i homered in little league
Was it a moon shot?
Iama
watching the 09 world series win with my dad
That was an amazing year
Bnavis
being held by someone who loves me dearly
True
Jiggy
honestly last new years me and gf and a few friends went to a rave and got drunk/did a fuckton of ecstasy and danced our asses off then went to this little hidden rooftop in downtown saskatoon that i stashed a few bottles of tequila and some cigarettes on and danced and smoke and drank up there and yelled at strangers on the street until like 4 then got an uber home, passed out, and then made a fuckpile of waffles and watched horror movies in the basement all new years day it was so fucking fun
Thats fucking awesome
Ruairi
Oh man this is a tough one. There are two that stand out in my mind, but I'm not sure which one to go with. I will tell another story about the cute girl I mentioned earlier in this survey. So this was a few months later (4 or 5). We started dating shortly after that Halloween night for the record. We spent pretty much everyday together since we lived just a floor apart and quickly became best friends. Anyway, it was a few months later and we were in her room. It was a Friday and I didn't have class until 1 on Fridays. We were making out on her bed and at one point she stopped and just looked at me. She started crying and I was confused so I asked her what was wrong. Through a cracked voice she says "I love you." It was the first time anyone had ever told me they loved me in that way and I had been thinking about telling her that I felt the same way leading up to this day but was too scared to. When she said it, I was then able to say it, which surprised her because I wasn't a very open person back then. It's one of the best feelings to have someone you love tell you that they love you back. And even though we aren't together anymore, the memory is still a good one for me, because it reminds me that I can be loved and I can feel love for someone, even in times when those things don't seem possible.
This brought a tear to my eye my dude
Rose
it feels slightly underwhelming to call it my happiest memory because it didn't last in the end but i think the most undeniably happy thing i can think of is entering my first real romantic relationship as a teenager. a lot of that time of my life i was fighting with depression and a genuine and significant romantic relationship was a realization that i could be deserving of love from other people and that i could connect and relate to another person in ways i was afraid i wasn't capable of.
This fucking hit me hard because I've been there
Cory
Camping with my brother and parents. Usually our trips involve some amount of shouting and fighting, even the really good ones. But this trip, we just spent three wonderful days in the wilderness, enjoying nature, eating good campfire foods, laughing and playing board games. Some catchphrases were spawned while playing those games that my family still quotes to this day.
That's awesome, I'd give anything to have that kind of time with my family again
Dylan
I went to a concert with a friend of mine that had just left the company we had worked for. She was in a relationship but she asked me to go with her because she had an extra ticket. It was a great time, really fun, great vibes. Didn't realize at the time that would be the person I'd be living with about 3-4 years later. Don't know if it's my happiest memory but it makes me really happy, know what I mean?
Thats awesome dude
Bgro
Either various moments on my solo bike trip across the country where I just felt total tranquility and satisfaction near the end of my trip OR this one time when my first nephew was like one and I was his favorite person and I took him out for a walk. He was distracted and I walked a little ahead of him and when he turned and noticed me a little further away, we made eye contact, he grinned a wide smile and then ran to me arms wide open for a hug. Kids do that kind of stuff all the time to people they know and trust but I've never felt such pure unadulterated love as I have from that kid in that moment. There is no artifice or conditionality in that sort of love. It felt good to be the cause of that someone else's sheer joy and seeing his face light up when he saw me, thats a memory that always brings me happiness.

2020.09.14 06:54 bedoublenegative Restaurants and Covid-19 Protocols/Enforcement

Not sure if this exists yet but I’ve been seeking a list of local restaurants/pubs/cafes and their pandemic protocols (such a staff enforcement, mask wearing, consistency, contact tracing, etc.) as well as any changes to regular service/menus.
If anyone is willing to share, I’ll try to keep this list updated as best as I can.
Current Orders in BC affecting Restaurants (hotels/tasting rooms/breweries may be exempt) can be found here:https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/health/about-bc-s-health-care-system/office-of-the-provincial-health-officecurrent-health-topics/covid-19-novel-coronavirus
Highlights of Provincial Orders (subject to change)
Note: This is all based on actual individual experiences. Please be aware that it isn't gospel. Visit at your own risk and contact the establishments for up to date info.

Restaurants/Cafe's/Breweries

10 Acres Commons - Staff wearing masks, contact tracing on entry, sanitizer on entry and at bathrooms. Restricted bathroom capacity not being controlled or suggested. Plexi dividers on top of booth seating (approx 6 ft high). Tables slightly distanced (more so on patio). Bar seating does not have a barrier. No major menu changes.
Artisan Bistro in Broadmead - Contact tracing, keeping the doors open, tables very spaced out, well spaced patio as well, all staff wearing masks.
Baan Thai on Blanshard - Taking temps at the door, contact tracing, wearing masks and physical distancing.
Bard and Banker - staff wearing masks, contact tracing being taken at door, enforcing 6 person max per table/group with no socializing between tables. Sanitizer is plentiful at front door and bathroom. Not enforcing bathroom capacity. No major menu changes.
Beagle Pub - Inconsistent contact tracing as of a month ago. Some staff masked but not all. Bartender wiped nose then handled glassware a couple of times. Sanitizer plentiful and staff trying to physically distance/enforcing the 2 metre rule. Some staff congregating with patrons/hugging.
Bodega: all staff wear masks. Contact tracing all persons, tables spaced properly, 6+8 seats at the bar, behind plexiglass. Sanitizer everywhere. Single stalk bathrooms. Tables and chairs cleaned after each guest.
Boom and Batten - Staff have face shield mask combos, tables separated. Bathrooms are individual with cleaning schedule and we’re very clean. No menu changes (someone could confirm). Didn’t contact trace at door but with reservation they likely didn’t need to. May differ for walk in. No major menu changes.
Brentwood Bay Resort Pub - Contact tracing consistent. Sanitizer on entry. Tables inside and on patio both distanced, but no clear walkways to avoid tables en route to patio from inside. One defined entrance and one exit to minimize contact. Staff wearing masks, and asking for distance when bussing tables/bringing food/drink.
Browns Social House - Uptown - Staff wearing masks at all times. Tables removed or blocked for distancing. Contact tracing has been consistent. Hand sanitizer at each table. Paper disposable menus. Bathroom tight with more than one person. No menu changes.
Cafe Mexico - staff wearing masks, contact tracing information taken, some seating removed, larger patio area, reduced menu, plexiglass.
Category 12 Brewing - Unsure on contact tracing. Staff wearing masks. Plexi barriers in place, no growler fills. Distancing in line and seating inside and outside is well spaced. Staff meticulous in cleaning the tables and even sanitizing the seats. Felt like one of the safest local establishments.
Christie's Pub - has distanced tables (not removed but "don't sit here" sheets on them) and contact tracing at the door, and sanitizer at the front. The staff do not have masks. They have some plastic sheeting between some of the areas (if you have been there you know there are separate areas/rooms with half-height walls between them), and you can sit at the bar. They have an outdoor section as well that also has distanced tables. Paper menus, and also menus visible on the walls.
Drake Eatery - Very spaced out patios (upstairs and downstairs) in market square. Staff wearing masks, order at bar (plexiglas). Only interaction with staff was behind plexi and then self service taking your own drink to your table. Food is delivered by staff. Heat lamps outside. Inside seating is very well spaced (almost no tables inside). Contact tracing has been very consistent.
El Furniture Warehouse - all staff wearing masks, contact tracing information taken, larger patio area, plexiglass separating tables, some seating removed.
Fernwood Inn - some seating removed, larger patio area, most staff wearing masks.
Fifth Street - All the staff were wearing masks. Plexiglass everywhere. The bar completely surrounded, there were single bar seats in plexiglass little booths. The booths themselves have plexiglass in between. Greeter at the door taking info down for contact tracing.
Finn's - Little distancing on patio. Tables inside spaced out more than usual but very little. Guests approx 3-4 feet apart when seated (back to back). Contact tracing in progress. Staff have masks but both experiences I have had them fiddling with them or the fit wasn't correct. Sanitizer available at front and bathrooms. No major menu changes.
Fisherman's Wharf - Being monitored for distancing at entry on walkway with staff. Bathrooms distanced with markers. Many vendor line-ups distanced with markers, however most patrons not distancing from others when seated, walking around, etc. Most not wearing masks.
Four Mile Pub - Voluntary contact tracing at entrance, sanitizer at entrance. Tables not distanced super well. Staff wearing masks but saw many who removed them or pulled them down while at the bar handling drinks. Menu has shifted over the last few months but everything on current menu was available. Plexi at bar in pub area and downstairs. Can’t comment on restaurant side.
Garrick’s Head Pub - Serving staff and most kitchen staff wearing masks, bartenders not. Plexi dividers between tables and at the bar seats. Bathrooms iffy for cleaning. No sanitizer at tables but available at front door and bathroom. No major menu changes. Reports of staff congregating/hugging guests though, which may limit effectiveness of any of these measures.
House of Boateng: limited seating with an expanded patio, staff all wear masks, tables are sanitized and designated as 'serviced' between customers, one way traffic, contact tracing etc.
Il Sauvage Brewing - Contact tracing in place. Tables are fairly spaced on main level but it is a small space. No info on upper level. Sanitizer available. Staff masks unknown.
Il Terrazzo: removed around 70 seats, antique windows added as barriers between tables, servers wear masks but the wait staff did not. Felt a bit crowded.
Irish Times - Staff wearing masks, contact tracing in place, some barriers between seating and added outdoor seating for distancing on patio.
Leopolds - staff wearing masks, contact tracing, distanced seating & each booth area has barriers around it. You could sit at the bar and though there was no barrieplexiglass between you and the bartender, they had masks on. Might have had menus but had the QR code to look it up on your phone.
Lighthouse Brewing - Unsure about contact tracing. Limiting patrons to one group inside at a time with signage and it is being enforced. Patio is fairly distanced. Growler fills allowed last visit with meticulous washing of growlers prior to fill. Staff not wearing masks last visit.
My Chosen Cafe, Pizza & Sugar Shack: reduced indoor seating, temporary patio in the parking lot, contact tracing, one way traffic, staff in masks, new pizza pick up window, and limit of 4 customers in the Sugar Shack.
Original Joes - Tuscany Village - Staff wearing masks, contact tracing, tables slightly distanced but not a lot. Sanitizer at door. Aisles to tables very close to actual tables making distancing really hard. No menu changes.
The Palms at Rialto - Contact tracing consistent, temp check at door, staff wearing masks consistently. Distancing is in place on bar side. No plexi divider though for bar seating between bar and patrons. Can’t comment on restaurant side yet. Bathrooms downstairs in hotel. Sanitizer available.
Phillips Brewing - Unsure about contact tracing. Lots of sanitizer available and monitoring of seating/distancing. Plexi barriers between seating at bar. Distancing in place between staff and patrons. Growler fills available. Not all staff wearing masks. Patio on sidewalk for added seating (5-6 tables).
Q at the Empress - Outdoor patio is physically distanced. Temp check at door, contact tracing consistent. Staff wearing masks and keeping their distance from patrons outside. Inside - no info provided yet. Washrooms are inside the hotel leaving more area to cover to utilize them. Menu mostly the same, but no popcorn at bar anymore.
Romeos - Hillside Location - Contact tracing is place, they have their own touchless protocol to let customers in and out of the restaurant. Sanitizer is provided at entry. Staff wears face shields. Plexi glass barriers and reduced occupancy. Cleaning booths thoroughly between customers.
Ross Bay Pub - good social distancing, normal menu (prices raised a bit and quality down hill recently), plexiglass barriers in some places, no masks worn and staff only cleaned table tops, kitchen staff not wearing masks, did not see hand sanitizer except for entry
Sherwood Cafe & Bar - Spacious dining room and two patios. Tables and seating appropriately distanced. Hand sanitizer on entry and at various locations. Floor markings to control flow of guests entering. Staff wearing masks (inc kitchen). Plexiglass at point-of-sale. Contact tracing and sanitization schedule in place. (from employee)
Smiths - Patio has contact tracing, distanced quite substantially. Staff wearing masks and precautions/sanitizing of payment machines. Unsure about washrooms. Menu quite limited compared to pre-covid. Inside pub unknown.
The Snug at Oak Bay Beach Hotel - Contact tracing in place. Valet providing a buffer at front door, then contract tracing at pub. Distanced tables, staff wearing masks consistently. Lots of precautions upon entry and exit to the pub and hotel. No plexi barriers in place. Santizer available upon entry to pub.
Spinnakers - Staff wearing masks, tables quite distanced. Contact tracing consistent. Pool room upstairs has capacity limit of 6 individuals. Upstairs has bar service currently, no table service/servers taking orders. Downstairs has servers. Menu has recently changed, but quite substantial still. They have also opened up a patio in the parking lot for additional capacity.
Surly Mermaid (Sidney): you could join their waitlist by phone, sanitizer asked to be used before you enter, all staff wearing masks, distanced tables.
Swans - Contact tracing consistent. Staff wearing masks, lots of sanitizer at front and at washrooms. No plexi, but tables staggered for distancing and lots of space. Covered patio area less distanced due to width, but still spaced out. No menu changes.
Tug Eatery - Contact tracing is consistent, sanitizer provided at entry and washrooms. Tables distanced quite well. Staff consistent with masks and protocols. Patio has been expanded with lots of outdoor seating.
Vancouver Island Brewing - Contact tracing in progress. Tables spaced pretty well inside and outside. Sanitation consistent. Unsure about growler fills. Staff not wearing masks. Patio outside for added seating.
Wild Mountain: outdoor seating only, contact tracing, extensive cleaning

Nomad X - requires masks and distances - they're a small startup delivery outfit
Skip the Dishes - Reports of no protocol for masks by drivers
Tutti Delivery, Door Dash, and Uber Eats all do require their drivers to wear masks.

2020.09.07 19:16 ARGH_IT_BURNS Opportunity to co-sign on a mortgage and move in with a parent - What could I be missing?

Hi all,
My parents are separating and through the sale of our original home, one of my parents had floated the idea that we'd be able to afford a place together. At first glance, this would accelerate me towards my financial goals ($1M for retirement + Ownership of primary residence) but I wanted to ensure that there aren't any other considerations that I may have overlooked:
My financial situation:
-28M currently earning 80K annually in a relatively stable tech/management consulting career. Employers are willing to allow relocation from Toronto to Vancouver while keeping my current role, responsibilities and overall career trajectory (The pandemic has been the busiest and most productive time of my career so far)
-$15K Emergency savings
-$45K investments split between BMO Smartfolio's RRSP, TFSAs, and a self-directed account
-No student or consumer debt
Parent's financial situation:
-$350K for the downpayment and other fees
-$2K Monthly budget from a combination of OAS and savings
-No outstanding debts
Lifestyle considerations:
-Currently happily single. I respect and accept that potential significant others may see this as a turnoff and significantly reduce my dating pool, but this is a tradeoff that I am willing to accept. I come from a culture where I'm honestly not bothered by the cultural stigma of living with a parent.
-I've had a chance to work overseas and in a variety of different cities, and I'm currently based in Toronto. Vancouver has captured my heart in terms of putting down long-term roots for its lifestyle and where the majority of my family/friends are.
-We're probably looking at a condo/townhouse 2 bedroom + 2bathroom setup for 500K-600K in the Greater Vancouver Area. (Burnaby/TriCities/New West) Will probably do a 20Yr Amortization at $1,500 mortgage payment a month, which will keep me at a comfortable ~33% of my take home pay committed to accommodations after property taxes and strata fees.
This seems like a positive life change for me, but I also want to make sure I'm not looking at the situation from rose-colored lenses. Any other considerations I should be thinking through or guides I should be referencing? I'm primarily using resources such as CMHC's Homebuying Step by Step Guide & homeownership.ca. Thanks!

2020.09.07 04:38 500scnds [Table] My name is Paolo Cattaneo. 5 years ago I quit my job, sold everything I had and embarked in a trip around the world on a motorcycle. Rode for almost 185000 km. Still going! Here to answer question about self sustained living on the road and long distance solo travelling. AmA! (pt 1)

Source Guestbook
Questions Answers
How much does this lifestyle cost you on average? Obviously it will vary by location Since the most asked question will be probably this one, I decided to break it down mathematically so, hopefully, it would be more transparent for everybody.
I don't think I could summarize with an average how much I spent per month, since the delta from month to month was absolutely unpredictable. But somehow everybody seems to love maths so... There you go.
A couple of things first: 1) different countries have different cost for food, accommodation, fuel and spare parts so to make an average, it s actually quite hard. For instance, a country like Peru cannot be compared in terms of costs with a country like the Netherlands in all terms. 2) when I travel, I am not on vacation. Just because I visit places and don't work, doesn't mean I can afford things like people that go on vacation for 2 weeks. People on holidays usually maintain the same level of comfort they have at home, or even improve it, righteously spoiling themselves, for the few days they have off in a year. I do the exact opposite. I spoil myself by not having to go to work.
Hence, there are 3 major costs in travelling on a motorcycles are: 1) fuel and bike parts (tyres, oil, filters, etc) 2) accommodation 3) food
These are also in order of importance. Fuel and bike maintenance guarantees the continuity of the journey so, those have the absolute priority. Where I sleep or what I eat, do not matter much. I will survive whatever I eat and wherever I sleep. It's incredible what our body can do end endure.
After a year of travelling I found out that, because my life and routine changed completely, I didn't need 3 meals a day anymore. Removing 1 meal a day allowed me to save a lot of money in the long run. It is a sacrifice but it is doable and It is super practical. I also found fasting good for the mind.
Sleeping arrangements could also affect greatly on your expenditures so, depending on countries and weather conditions, I usually opt to sleep in my tent or in hostels. Sometimes I do couchsurfing or stay at other motorcyclists houses, friends, friends of friends, etc. I ve also slept at complete strangers houses that i met on the road and that were reaching out simply to help. It s unbelievable how many people, just want to give you a hand. It s impossible to explain it. You have to see it yourself to believe it.
The cheap hostel in Peru would cost $5-6 a night, while in the USA $25.
In this sense, I estimated an average of 10 USD a night for accommodation for and average of 20 days per month. Again, It is a rough estimate. Let s say the other 10 days I sleep at people's houses, or in my tent or couchsurfing (so at no cost). Foodwise I usually drink a coffee (I carry my own little Italian coffee machine) in the am, with a piece of bread or instant oatmeal. Then I ride the whole day and reach my destination at 4-5 pm. I then eat. I mostly eat vegetarian but i occasionally have meat. I mostly shop at cheap supermarkets or local markets. Vegetables are cheap and nutritious and available all over the world. And so is pasta and rice. This whole thing costs me let s say 10 USD a day.
So for Food and Accommodation I roughly spend 500 USD. Then there's fuel. Fuel costs can vary from country to country but, for the sake of it, let s put fuel price at 1.2 USD a liter (4.5 USD a gallon). My bike in standard riding conditions does 20km per liter of fuel. In 5 years I rode 180000 km. That's 36000 a year. That s 3000 a month. So 3000/20 = 150 liters. 150 x 1.2 = 180 USD
The grand total is 500+180= 680USD per month Let s put 100 USD in for extras and whatever. It's 780 USD a month, if you will. But trust me when I say that I think I spend less than that.
There you go.
the below is a reply to the above
What is your coffee maker? Moka pot i'm guessing? I have a little Bialetti coffee machine, yes. :)

Yeah, that confirms you are really Italian. So is my SO, and when we are traveling, she will start complaining about the bad coffee by the time we get to the airport 😄 I am Italian...but I'm also passed that point of complaining about food all the time! I learned to enjoy my meal...regardless. :)
another coffee reply
Any tips for the Bialetti? A neighbor gave me one and I used it with Café Bustelo and it was crazy stong, albeit not too bad. Use less coffee ground! 😅

If you saved 40k, are you down to very little money now? I'm just thinking it's been 5 years, and I imagine you've had some unexpected expenses that would have your average end up being relatively accurate on aggregate, even if you typically spend less in a month. At $700 per month, you would be out of money. And even just the plane tickets from Australia to starting point and from somewhere to Greece where you say you were during Covid is a couple months of your budget I'd imagine. Yes, i had some unforeseen expenses. But luckily I also had a lot of help from people giving me shelter and food. In that sense I didn't spend all my money in food and accommodation but for the sake of average expenses I had to calculate it that way. In greece i found a job as volunteer in exchange of accommodation. That saved me 3 months of rent. Things like this cannot be included in average. I simply did the math to make people understand how much would it cost if life on the road would be without variables. There are too many to be considered.
the below is another reply to the original answer
Even if it's only 600 at month, you have been riding around for how long? It seems hard to think you saved so much and you are still using the money you saved. Is anyone helping you financially? I swear...i am using my money. 😅👍 It s hard to imagine how cheap it is to live frugally...if you renounce to most comforts we have in life. But I wouldn't mind now to have a benefactor(s) and sleep in a comfy bed or have a nice meal for a change.
Does it not worry you how you might have exhausted your financial resources by the time you want to return? What do you think life after this would be like? I hope I don't sound rude; just trying to understand how you are managing your life. What you are doing is absolutely amazing; I'd love to travel too but I am not rich either, and the thought of ending up penniless by the time I am 30 terrifies me. Hey, it's a completely plausible question and I am happy to answer that. Quitting your job, your financial stability, selling everything you have, saying goodbye to everybody and ride off...it is a "liberating" experience. In this sense, all the fears you mentioned are gone or somehow abandoned, the moment you decide to go for it! I have no fear of what lies in front of me because the mental step that I took years ago, required me to go beyond exactly this mental gap of "jumping into the unknown". Financially speaking, yeah, i don't like to have no money aside...but also, I know that I will do something about it (like finding a new stimulating gig) when the time comes. When I found myself locked in Greece during the pandemic, I couldn't really foresee what would have happened in the next months. Surely paying rent for months and being confined in an apartment wasn't ideal so I looked for volunteering jobs. Found one that allowed me to stay in an apartment for free in exchange of 3 hours of work per day. My point is that, adaptation is a key skill that I got to develop thanks to this experience on a motorcycle. I will take care of the my retirement plan, when time comes.
the below is a reply to the above
Thanks for the answer. That's a wonderful perspective. I guess your anxiety lessens once you realize how capable you are of adapting to different situations, which I'm sure you must have had to do a bunch of times since you started. You are amazing, thanks for the inspiration :) It's incredible how inclined we are to adapt, If we simply...TRY ! I never thought I would be able to do a lot of things I am doing today. I just gave it a try...failed...and tried again. I did learn, by simply trying. And I'm clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I feel like you cloud start vlogging your journeys, and form a Patreon to fund it. You've seen lots of fun things, and will see more. Yes. At the beginnings I started blogging but then I realized that it would have turned my trip into a job again...so i left the monetization of my journey aside. I just quit my job to travel and enjoy my life. Didn't want to think about money again! Patreon seem good but I haven't really found the guts to ask money to people...yet. When I ll be in need maybe i will!
the below is another reply to the original answer
In no way am I trying to attack you or diminish your extraordinary feat; just the fact that you had the courage to take the first step gives me crazy respect for you. BUT. There is so much privilege needed to get to where you have gotten. Not financial privilege mind you, you've worked your arse off to get here. But the fact that you could somehow travel to and stay in the US (for 3 years!) and then Australia without really thinking twice tells me your white skin and European passport has played a huge role in your mental safety net. As a coloured man with a shitty passport, just getting a visa to fly somewhere would be a huge fucking deal. Add to that the racism I'd face in plenty of places around the world, yeah not happening haha. You are absolutely right, my friend. I do understand that the fact that I am white and that I have an EU passport helped me A LOT. I am absolutely aware of this and I am not so naive to think that most of the times I got away with many things because of this. Coming from other countries or being a different colour could unfortunately still play a role, these days, when moving from country to country. Said this, I got denied my entrance to USA few times anyway. They are quite strict in that sense. But it always depends on the customs officer you find at the time of entry. Anyway. I get your point. Although, it's not a definite factor for your will to travel. You can still do it.

I love everything you're doing and have spent the last hour just reading your answers. I don't think you're answering anymore but... Do you have any plans of coming to India? I hope I get to meet you if you do come. Hey! Of course i have plans for India! Hopefully the covid will end soon! It all depends on that now

You can write blogs, and make YouTube videos to sustain your adventures! I am sure many of us would like to see your journey. I got few videos on youtube but i never really invested too much time (clearly) in that. Maybe I should
I always hear about people "giving up everything" and traveling the world. However, most people have worries about their economic status. Can you speak to yours at the point when you embarked? How much money had you saved, did you have any debt, what did you do with your belongings (Were there things you stored somewhere because you did want to sell or get rid of them? Did you pay for storage?), did you create a plan to generate additional income (e.g., plans for side jobs while traveling), and have you thought how to re-integrate into the "working world" when your traveling concludes (or are you hoping YouTube, etc. supports you)? Thanks! So, I started saving money when I moved to Australia. In 5 years I rounded up $40k more or less. I had no debts and, regardless the bank offering me "super interesting" offers about Credit Cards or Mortgages to buy properties, I didn't end up getting in debts with any banks. I also avoided kids and wives. I was renting an apartment and sharing it with a friend. When I decided to leave I sold all my furnitures on Gumtree (local Craigslist) and donated all my clothes to Salvation Army (Goodwill). I had no belongings left except what I piled on the bike when I left. And few months in I also realized that I didn't even need some stuff that I brought along. I did quit my job with no plans to work while travelling. I wanted, for the first time in my life, have a moment to simply ENJOY THE MOMENT without thinking about work and life as I knew it. I wanted to experience freedom, without the burden of thinking about my future constantly and what's going to happen next. I was raised with this mental construct too, so to break free from that was indeed liberating. I do not know how is going to be when this part of my life ends. If I have to go back to work, I will. But with a different heart and mind.
How did you manage it, physically? I find that my legs, back, bottom and body ache after just a few hours of riding (3+ hours), and this gets worse and worse over time (6+ hours, etc). Even on a comfortable touring motorcycle, I can’t imagine riding continuously for weeks or months at a time. Yes. Physically was challenging indeed. I had to replace my seat because the was no more foam inside. It was like sitting on a stool. Back and arse are the worst affected areas. I rode with a bit of a windscreen, so that helped to ease some of the neck pain. Luckily I had some physical conditioning to start with, but eventually I got out of shape. But, like everything in life, we eventually get used to it.
the below is a reply to the above
How many hours do you ride a day? It really depends. When I do ride, let's say that is a minimum of 1 and a half to 13 hours.
Could you maybe do a "what's in my bag"-post, show us the gear, tools and clothing you use and talk a bit about why you chose what? Ok.
Pannier 1 Camping Gear: - Sleeping bag - Air mattress - 3 people tent (I'm a tall guy) - $20 cooking pot set - propane gas tank - pocket knife - foldable chair - water bladder
Pannier 2 Electronics and knick knacks: - 11" laptop - 2 hard drives (backup!!!) - Chargers - portable tyre compressor - spare oil filter - spare front tube - cable ties - duct tape - bungee cords - first aid kit - spare bolts and screws
Tool bag - various moto tools
Duffle bag: - Clothes (various)
Tank Bag: - Drone - Toothbrush - Notepad - Small Lock - Pen
the below is a reply to the above
Did you have any problems with the drone? I remember you told me once on instagram that you planned on visiting Azerbaijan but couldn’t because Azerbaijan closed all the borders. Let me warn you that if you decide to come when borders reopen, know that drones are illegal here. Retarded law I know but you really cannot do anything about it because it is highly enforced. Probably you can give it up in customs and pick it up when you leave Nicaragua is the same. They don't allow drones in their country. I had to send it to costa rica via mail.
the below is another reply to the original answer
Traveling without a Leatherman. I can't believe it. It s listed. "Pocked knife" ;) You are right...i should have said Leatherman
the below is another reply to the original answer
What drone do you have? DJI mavic Air.
the below is another reply to the original answer
I have a CB600F I've fitted panniers to and can't fathom how you got all that camping stuff into one pannier, your packing skills must be sick I got some pretty roomy panniers too. Giant Loop is actually a company from Oregon, USA that makes these spectacular bags. Www.giantloopmoto.com I ve been riding with their products for years now.
Well nobody has asked it yet.. How did you self sustain yourself for so long? I understand everything is cheaper in South America but you also went through North America. In north America, specifically in USA, I had some friends that helped me finding accommodation along the way. I also wild camped a lot. Froze my arse up couple of nights too... But It's doable in Canada and USA since the land is so vast and you can always find a place to pitch your tent in safety.
the below is a reply to the above
See my trouble always begins when I pitch a tent I used to be the same, mate!
the below is another reply to the original answer
Maybe I'm just jaded but I don't know of anywhere you can just pitch a tent and sleep in the woods. Everywhere I've ever been camping there's an 80 dollar fee and you get a designated campground. Download iOverlander.
Hi, sorry if this is a personal question, but how often did you get laid? Do cultural differences play a role? Personal question, but interesting nonetheless. Thanks for asking "sensibly".
When travelling from town to town it's easy to meet people. The common Idea is that travellers get laid a lot. Unfortunately, in my case, I do not go out much when I travel, so my social encounters are limited to the location where I end up spending the night. I also typically stay not longer than a day or two, which is also usually not enough to create a connection with a potential partner (in my case). A lot of women are indeed attracted by the "solitary wolf" riding a motorcycle around the world, but they are not generally inclined to have a one night experience. Hence, the answer to your question, is that I rarely get laid. Cultural differences are what make mating interesting though. One trait that is standard for your part of the world, could be extremely exotic in another. Sometimes even the accent in which you speak a foreign language, could be a favourable factor.
But at the end, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
the below is a reply to the above
Dai ammettilo che l'accento italiano aiuta. Storia interessante la tua. Ti auguro il meglio! Sorry guys.. Italian things going on here ( shakes hands in the air ) Un pochino aiuta! ;) cheers!
How did you deal with language barriers? In all latin america the most spoken language is Spanish. I struggled at the beginning but after the first month, I had a decent basic level that allowed me to communicate quite easily with the locals. In Brazil was hard again, since portuguese was completely new for me. But again, after 1 month I got used to it and I was able to have basic conversations. If you give yourself enough time, you'll pick up any language.
In other situations I used my english or sometimes, like recently in Greece, Google Translate. Works beautifully!
Is it true that Italian and Spanish go hand in hand? I had some friends from Mexico who were confident that they could pick up Italian if they lived in Italy and were forced to use it every day for a month or 2. There are different and discordant opinions about this. I personally believe that Italian and Spanish are VEEEEERY similar. I think that any spanish speaker could easily pick on italian if spending some time in the country. And viceversa. But I also met people that thought otherwise. Not sure why. It wasn't too complex for me to pick up spanish. Definitely not perfect, but way better than a native english speaker.
What was the coolest thing you saw? Hard to pinpoint one single thing. Saw so many incredible things in 5 years! Nature always strucks me the most. Some places leave you speechless. Some encounters too. But the coolest experience for me was to swim with marine wildlife in Australia and Ecuador.
the below is a reply to the above
Hey I from Ecuador! Glad you enjoyed the wildlife. Can you elaborate on your experience there? Did you visit the Galapagos islands? Ecuador is hands down my favorite country...for its people, for nature, for food, roads...i mean, i had a fantastic time there. I also visited Galapagos and It was one of the highlights...of my life!! I mean...wow. simply incredible. If there was ever a place on earth close to Jurassic Park...
How does your license work? I mean if you have a drivers license in one country and you drive through multiple countries. What happens if you get pulled over? Having European or Australian driver license is sufficient to drive in most foreign countries. I do have an International Driver License, which is simply a piece of paper you can request from your local Automobile Club, that translates your license in many languages and which is helpful when finding an "scrutinous" policeman. At the borders they never check your driving license.
the below is a reply to the above
What about the motorbike's papers? Did you need a carnet de passage ? And could you tell us about the shipping of the bike, plane or boat, expense, level of organisation needed? For the americas, you don't need CdP. The shipping of bike could be done by cargo ship or plane. Both are not cheap but quite feasible. There are agencies that usually take care of the paperwork for you. A simple google search could help you pinpoint some good info. Unfortunately because rules and prices change from country to country, prices have to be requested to the company you choose. It is usually around $1500 + to ship a motorcycle indicatively...for both sea or air freight.
Can you speak on your base knowledge of bikes at the start of your travels? I'm interested in purchasing a bike to cruise around America in once (if) this pandemic blows over. Did you ever have to do any emergency DIY work when you couldnt make it to a garage for professuonal repairs? First of all: DO IT!! it's an amazing experience. I had basic/zero motorcycle mechanical skills when I started. I often used youtube as a source of "inspiration". Now I rather do the job myself than taking my bike into a shop. If you are going to cruise around the US, you wont need to carry much spares, since you can buy and have most parts shipped wherever you are. Somehow even breaking down, if happens, is a great part of the overall adventure.
[deleted] I am not sure. Yet. Definitely the more I go on with this adventure (and life) the more I become aware of myself and my surroundings. I am looking forward to have somehow a peaceful life in harmony with my surroundings. Stress has been out of my life for a while now and I want to keep it this way. Don't have a family. Never had kids or wives. I think it's going to stay this way...but you never know.
the below is a reply to the above
You've been doing this 5 years now. Do you feel the need to keep moving after you've been somewhere for a few days? How long is the longest you've been stationary since staring and did you ever feel like you wanted to get off the road for a longer time. Well...yes I always feel the need to see something more and explore. I get bored easily. But I have to say that during my Lockdown in Greece I was absolutely at peace. I really enjoyed my down time and i took advantage of it by taking care of many little things i left behind.
Did you tend to keep to yourself most of the time, or would you go out to meet people and socialize with the locals in the area? I am not really a "social beast" anymore. I socialize in hostels and when I look for food mostly...but I don't go out at night. That is quite personal, but I prefer a quiet night than pubs. This allowed me somehow to save a lot of money in the long run. I may have missed out in "social opportunities", but I prefer this way.
the below is a reply to the above
But you did meet a lot of people right? Im not social at all and it keeps me from traveling, im afraid that it would ruin the experience if I dont click with anyone haha. You gave me some confidence this will be a smaller problem than I think it is. I am an introvert and generally speaking, kind of a geek. So yeah...not really the outgoing kind of guy...but, when travelling alone, you don't have that social pressure anymore. You are by yourself and there's nothing to tell you what you have or not have to do. you are free. And yes...you will meet tons of people!!
Where do you stay at (camping, airbnb, rental, etc) ? Where you get money from? What do you usually carry with you? What is you most essential item? Have you made many friends? I mostly stay in Hostels (when is cheap enough). In latin America, you can pay from $5-$10 for a night in a shared dorm. When in remote areas, I camp. Best thing ever. Otherwise I use Couchsurfing. Occasionally I stay with friends and/or other bikers that got to know my story and want to help out. I live off my own savings. Most essential Item is "Common sense". AKA try not to do extremely stupid things. :)
the below is a reply to the above
How far do you usually have to plan ahead to find couchsurfing accommodations? The one thing that has deterred me from trying it out is that my motorcycle trips almost never stick to the schedule I have planned. Either due to unforeseen circumstances or maybe just deciding to ride around an area longer. Have you given people on CS a range of dates/times that you would arrive, or do you have to have your arrivals planned thoroughly? Yes, you usually have to investigate one or two weeks ahead to find accommodation with couchsurfing. Especially because I am a single guy. If i was a girl, i could find somewhere to sleep in few hours. Ahah. Oh well, women are less threatening i guess! ;) But yeah. You do need to check first and give a rough estimate of days of your permanence. Typically 2-3 days is the max. Then if both parties are ok, you can extend.
Have you ever done any housesitting for accommodation? I've done smaller trips like this, staying in hostels and campsites. I've heard of housesitting more recently and once I go again I'm thinking of trying it out. When looking at listings though it almost seems to good to be true. I just wonder if there is a catch to it I ve never done housesitting specifically. But I ve used HelpX, Workaway, woofing, etc to find occasional gigs that allowed me to get accommodation in return of small jobs. In Greece i stayed in a 9 apts complex on the beach by myself, in exchange of cleaning and painting! Great deal indeed
the below is another reply to the second answer
If you were a woman, there would also be far more risks to couch surfing alone. I'd definitely prefer planning over higher risk of sexual assault. Women have more chances of getting hosted because there are a lot of women hosts too. Or couples. They are definitely more willing to host a woman. But i get your point
the below is another reply to the original answer
Thanks, got another question. What is enough savings for a year in Latin America? well, it really depends of what kind of lifestyle you want. If you are ok sleeping in hostels every night and eating cheap market food...doesn't really take much! depending on which countries you want to visit too and how you want to move around! you can do it hitchhiking too if you want! and that won't cost you a thing! Just time!
How did you manage to not have your motorcycle stolen? Common sense. Mostly parked inside or in "safe areas" when possible. You can never be 100% sure but I never had issues of sort in my 5 years of travelling. Actually somebody stole my tool bag in Vancouver, Canada.
the below is a reply to the above
As a Canadian id like to say “sorry”. apologies accepted! ;)
the below is another reply to the original answer
As a Vancouverite, I'm not surprised. We have a large homeless population and they target anything they can find to steal and sell. It wasn't a homeless guy per se...was definitely a junkie. I went to Hastings street 3 days in a row to see if i could find my stuff...but it was gone. Bummer.
how were the first few months without the things that you were used to having? (sorry for the bad english, it isn't my main language) Your english is fine, mate! First month was HARD! 😅 I had never camped in my life and the longest moto trip I took by that time was only 350km. So yeah, in the beginnings the learning curve was steep! Basic things like "where to sleep at night every night" or "how to store food" were kind of abstract concepts for me. My first night camping was also my first night on the road. It was horrible. I paid so much money to camp in a so so campground, with noisy and drunk neighbors. It also rained at night. Haha An absolute fail! It got better and better with time. Also looking for food, packing and taking care of the bike. It was a full immersion in a brand new lifestyle for me. A great experience indeed
the below is a reply to the above
Paolo, your first night camping sounds ... well, it sounds really terrible! I'm curious how you would compare that first inexperienced night with say... an average night camping somewhere, anywhere, I don't know... say 2-4 years later after having done it for a while. In which ways did that first inexperienced night of camping come to differ from your more seasoned camping night to night later on? What kinds of routines did you end up falling into on those nights that you picked up from years of experience having done it? Well...let's just say that my love for camping escalated quickly as well. I started camping in the wild...not in confined facilities, and I simply loved it. Sitting quietly in front of the fire at night, after a long day riding, watching the stars appear slowly in the sky... The silence. I learned that camping in a busy campsite, with kids screaming and music playing is not the kind of camping I was looking for. Surely is great for families, because usually it is a safe environment for kids to play in, but for solo travellers looking for some quiet downtime...it is not. Better to hide somewhere behind a tree or some bushes and have a quiet night with some privacy. Free of charge.
How badly do you stink? Joking of course, good luck with your adventures. If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? ;)
Not to be nosey but what would qualify as enough money to "sustain yourself for a while"? And how long do you consider that "a while" to be? I had no Idea how much It would cost me to live, travel and not work, since I had never done it before. But I knew how much It costed me to live in Sydney for a year, without any extras (just food, accommodation, rent and bills). I assumed initially that my trip around the world would have lasted a maximum of 1 year and a half. Was I wrong! I pretty much had saved $40k in 5 years of work.
Thanks for doing this! How much do you talk to strangers? I can imagine either being very sociable, or taking the opportunity to be more solitary. Also, when you were traveling the world, how specifically did you keep in contact with friends and family back home? Was one service/approach more effective than another? I love to talk with Locals!! It's the best thing! I love to talk with older people especially. They can really give you a better perspective about the place and overall more interesting stories about their lives. Sometimes there's a language barrier but I try regardless. Hostels are also a great place to meet friends and people from all over the world. Aside from this, travelling solo on a motorcycle or bicycle naturally attracts curiosity, so I also met some good friends of mine at gas stations or random rest areas in the middle of nowhere.
To keep in touch with family and friends nowadays is quite easy. Mobile data networks are excellent worldwide and you can buy local sim cards to use local carriers data traffic. I use whatsapp and fb messenger the most.
What kind of income are you receiving to sustain this lifestyle long-term? Living off my life savings. I am self supported. Just worked for few years, saving as much as I could and then took off.
the below is a reply to the above
That sounds epic... Met a few guys like that, but never had the balls to do so myself. If you read this: how much of a mechanic are you? Do you do stuff yourself of do you bring your bike to the shop for maintenance/tires? At the beginning I wasn't really able to do much on my bike, except changing brake pads maybe. Then I tried and read forums online about troubleshooting...and of course youtube mate!! I tend to have a mechanic change my tyres, since it's a hell of a job and takes 4 minutes with proper machines. you can find tyre mechanics literally EVERYWHERE.
the below is another reply to the original answer
But, with the estimate you gave it would cost like 9k usd per year to maintain that lifestyle. You’ve been doing it for 5 years. I guess it’s hard for a lot of Americans to imagine saving up 45k+ in the few years that you worked. trust me, It's even harder for an italian to conceive to save up 40k in 5 years of work. Most italians will be able to save that amount maybe in 10-15 years. That's why I quit my job in italy and moved to Australia, where salaries are way higher. It's just sad that I had to leave my family, friends and country to be able to have a better life.
the below is another reply to the original answer
Why dont you try to register for welfare in Australia, and get the welfare cheques deposited into your account? I thought about it while riding around Australia. But I didn't find it fair. I mean, I wasn't in need of cash to sustain my living and there were probably people who seriously did. Plus I think you have to show up for interviews and stuff...so I preferred to let go.
OP, you're doing what I've dreamed of doing since I was about 21... I'm 32 now. I've saved a bit of money, and have no debt, and am still considering it... but feel as though it would be irresponsible at this point? shrugs I have a few questions, Ever considered staying at a spot for a few weeks and doing some manual labor for extra scratch to help you along in your travels? Ever had any problem with weird parasites in some of your rougher spots (scabies, bedbugs, intestinal issues) such as cheap hostels and whatnot? Since you don't go to bars or anything like that, what's the easiest way for you to meet new people? Ever felt any "I'm about to get robbed" vibes while on the road? Did you make rules like not traveling too late, etc.. I'm considering doing this very thing, since I make a good living but am already a minimalist and don't really need anything... I don't care about owning a house, or having nice clothes or any of that nonsense. I suppose it'd just be a drag to hit a dead end, have to return to the workforce after a few years of traveling and finding myself unable to secure a decent gig again. Anyways, if you've read this, thanks for your time and thanks for doing this AMA! Good luck man, and stay safe. Mate, when I left for my first trip around Australia, I was 34yo...so I completely understand where you are coming from. It take a bit of time to prepare and commit to this. I highly recommend it though. I stopped occasionally and did some jobs, yes, but were more like small temporary gigs...that paid maybe for a new set of tyres than anything. Still! Once I pressured washed mine trucks for a week in South Australia. Haha i was covered in mudd but I was happy. I also cleaned few apartments in greece in exchange of accommodation....things like that. Things will come your way if you look hard enough.
Didn't have any problems with bugs or parasites no. Got lucky on this one i guess. But i do believe I built my immune system pretty well.
The easiest way to meet people is in hostels. Being in your 30s you are already on the "old side" for a hostel, but you are still ok. ;) haha
Sometimes yes i felt i was going to get robbed or mugged...but never happened. I never travel with cameras and other expensive items with me. When i am on the bike, there s always the "surprise effect", meaning that people are more shocked to see somebody travelling solo than tempted to rob him right away.
How has the pandemic altered any future travel plans? The pandemic changed things quite drastically. A lot of other travellers I know got stuck somewhere or had to cancel their plans until further notice. Still not sure what to do in the long terms. Covid definitely made everything more unpredictable.
What are the cheapest and best places you would suggest a young person go visit? Also, just out of curiosity, when do you think you’ll stop? Well, there are plenty of great places to go explore on a tight budget. Latin America and South East Asia are generally speaking quite cheap. I would recommend Bolivia or Peru, in SA...and Cambodia in SEA. As a start...
I Hope I will be able to go on for few more years...but so far I am pretty content with what I've done already.
How do you overcomevia issues? I believe you referred to "Visa issues"?!
Well, having an Italian passport is quite handy since you get visa on arrival (valid for 1-3 months) as a tourist in most of the countries in the world. I had to request and pay for my Russian and Mongolian visa though. You can request that 1-2 weeks before entry in any available Embassy.

And what about other practical stuff like insurance for the motorcycle(is it allowed to be abroad for such a long time ?) ? Maybe obligatory x-yearly technical vehicle inspections (so far not needed in a lot of european countries but about to change so you were lucky I guess) ? Official site of residence (or what is it called, it is really hard to be 'homeless' in some countries, probably depends on what your current 'home country' is ) ? Ok so, insurance for motorcycle is something you need to get every time you enter a new country. Some insurance companies will insure foreign vehicles, but it isn't always the case. My bike is australian so after a certain point you need to inspect the vehicle to renew the registration. There is a process through which you can go to an associated mechanic in the country where you are and have the vehicle inspected and the results sent to the Australian motorvehicle authority. Then you can renew your papers online and have the new registration sent to you overseas. My official country of residence is still Australia, because it is where I want to go back to.
the below is a reply to the above
Thanks for the response. I can imagine it is not the most interesting thing to talk about but I am planning on doing something similar with a van + motorcycle (that fits in the van) combo so I am super interested in hearing about the (boring) administrative side of someone who is actually doing it :D. I had no idea something was possible like the remote inspection, I hope something similar exists in my country too. So far I only read you have to go to inspection asap when returning to your country if you were abroad. But I can imagine that is not going to fly if you plan on being away for a very long time though :P. Also: did you happen to keep a list of insurance companies that were willing to do it ? In that sense things change rapidly and new and better companies may arise. Better check with locals or use iOverlander app to find these kind of info.
