Tulsa Preparedness & Planning
College students should check out their university's emergency alert system - if you're not signed up to get notices, you should!
Useful links on: hurricane preparedness, emergency kits, emergency supplies for your car.

Louisburg Other things worth thinking about or getting:
  • General: A cooler. Fun/mental health stuff - books, games, etc. Cash. Weather radio and batteries. Flashlights > candles. Backup cell phone, laptop, or other batteries. Extra water. Hand sanitizer. Comfort items (a toddler's blankie, the puppy's favorite toy, your grandpa's watch you can't imagine losing).
  • Specialized: Transportation and assistive devices (think especially about children, pets, the elderly, people with disabilities).
  • Cars: Gas. Window breakeseatbelt cutter.

Gattaca Florida Safety:
  • Check your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector batteries!
  • Watch out for downed power lines. Never assume it is dead. Avoid it.
  • Assume floodwaters are deeper than they look. Turn around, don't drown.
  • Learn your flood and evacuation zones!
  • Food safety from the FDA and USDA.
  • If your home floods and you need to go up, head for the roof. Keep an ax in your attic to get out that way if you need it.
  • Be aware of potential 911 delays.
  • Evacuate! If you can, check on people you know to see if they need help evacuating if you can offer it or put them in touch with someone who can.

Hertfordshire Documentation:
  • Bring it with you.
  • Store it in a plastic bag to they are together and stay dry.
  • House deed/rental agreement/lease.
  • Insurance information (home, car, renters, medical, flood).
  • Identification (ID card/driver's license, passport, Social Security card, marriage/birth certificates).
  • Take photographs of your home before you evacuate and when you return. Good documentation of the damage may help if you need to file an aid or insurance claim.

For long-term preparedness, check out CERT training information.

2020.07.02 23:35 yonatan777 Trying to Leave Nashville, Considering Tri-Cities

Hi, I am a single 42 year old Jewish guy who just lost his already struggling software business due to the Covid pandemic. I'm going to be living on a very meager income and taking out a loan to survive. Nashville's economy is really going down the toilet and they are now revoking the licenses of several of the largest tourist attractions in town which will only hurt to rape the economy even more. As well, the COvid restrictions here have resulted in so many businesses to shut down and today the Mayor announced he will be shutting down all bars and perhaps even shutdown all restaurants and retail businesses. Basically, Nashville's economy will implode as it was already struggling and there is no way it will weather a longer shutdown. I worry for its future.
I also am not really a fan of Nashville , but I have heard a lot of great things about the Tri-Cities and Knoxville. These are two places in Tennessee I am considering to relocate. I'm originally from the Pacific Northwest and grew up in Oregon and lived in Seattle for 6 years before moving East and then lived a short time in Charlotte, NC and then Denver, CO for a year. I couldn't take the weather in Denver and like the steamy and warm summers here in the South.
I actually liked North Carolina a lot, but I hear the economy there is in horrible shape with the very strict Covid restrictions and has the strictest lockdowns next to New York. Unfortunately, because I am in such financial turmoil I cannot afford to move back to a place like Charlotte, anyway.
I'm hoping to save money and spend the next year preparing for job interviews because I have not had to go onto the software market in 15 + years . I do have 20 years of application (not web) software development experience, but the software market is in bad shape and there is mostly only web jobs available in Nashville. I also am just not ready to interview yet. I was thinking I may just need to work some part-time job, doing whatever kind of work I can get wherever I move. Software interviews are extremely challenging and it will require preparation. Just so people know I am not a web developer (my experience is desktop development) but I am striving to switch to web development.
In addition to not really finding people in Nashville area that friendly, the place is insanely expensive, even with the crippled economy. Despite everyone losing jobs around me, my landlords will be raising my rent $100/mo to $1300/mo for 2bed that is like 30 miles from downtown Nashville. My place is ridiculously cheap by Nashville standards too. I will be living on a shoestring and cannot afford it. There also is just some kind of vibe I find here that reminds me of California a little. It's not like Charlotte area, where people were friendly and outgoing. As well, people in Denver were way more laid back and friendly than Nashville. Not sure what the deal is, but there is a lot of big money here, maybe from the music business and a large number of wealthy Californian transplants?
TL;DR
I really fell in love with the beauty of Eastern Tennessee and the mountains there. Growing up in the Northwest I find Nashville too be way too flat for me. As well, I got hit by an EF-4 tornado that ripped right past my apartment complex 3 months ago and I thought I would die. I hear the Tri-Cities has less tornadoes, which is good. I am big into hiking, outdoors and hope I can enjoy some nature. I'm pretty much locked up in my house in Nashville (actually Wilson county) as there is nothing to do with everything being closed and its not worth driving hours for the hiking around here. I don't have much free time either.
I'm probably looking for a place around $700/mo. Cheaper is better, of course. I will be storing and selling most of my life possessions; just taking the bare necessities with me. I don't know what the crime is like in Tri-Cities area. From what I see, there isn't too much violent crime at least. Can I find a place where I can rent a 1 bedroom apartment, house , maybe even a mfg home deal for that money? Anyone know what kind of part-time jobs would be available? I hear there really isn't any IT market in the Tri-Cities, so I doubt I will find a local software job (and not ready to interview either yet), but will be striving for a remote job. I could do any kind of work for part-time that will help get me by.
Is there high-speed broadband available in the Tri-Cities area like Spectrum, AT&T or Comcast?
Anyone else know how hard it is for a single non-Christian (Jewish) guy for having a social life and dating? I understand its a smaller city and probably not many options for getting to know people and being an outsider I can imagine it may take a lot of time to make friends in more rural area of Tennessee. As of now ,survival is more important to me than socializing anyway. But, it is always good to know the situation there and I feel you need to be part of your community. In Nashville that is tough.
As far as me lifestyle/views, I am pretty Libertarian , live and let-live type who likes country music, bluegrass and Southern culture and grew up in rural Oregon. Oregon reminds me a little of East Tennessee from my brief travels there. I don't really adhere to "Jewish culture" but I do practice Judaism, although not religiously.

2020.05.01 15:13 rusticgorilla Coronavirus response: Trump denies funeral aid as minority communities suffer without tests & treatment

Welcome, dear readers, to my coronavirus roundup. I'm posting these every Friday in addition to Lost in the Sauce on Mondays (for non-coronavirus news).
Title refers to the sections "Minorities and low-income communities" and "Trump sits on funeral aid"
TLDR pinned at top of comments
Housekeeping:

Intelligence warnings

More than a dozen issues of the President’s Daily Brief (PDB) in January and February contained warnings about the novel coronavirus, its spread, and the suppression of information in China. During this period, Trump downplayed the virus and insisted it was under control.
U.S. officials emphasized that the PDB references to the virus included comprehensive articles on aspects of the global outbreak, but also smaller digest items meant to keep Trump and senior administration officials updated on the course of the contagion… One official said that by mid- to late January the coronavirus was being mentioned more frequently, either as one of the report’s core articles or in what is known as an “executive update,” and that it was almost certainly called to Trump’s attention orally.

Part of a pattern

The president did not take the warnings seriously, if he noticed them at all: Trump “routinely skips reading the PDB and has at times shown little patience for even the oral summary he takes two or three times per week.”
According to then-CIA Director Mike Pompeo in 2017, Trump prefers “killer graphics” in his briefings and doesn’t want too many details so intelligence officials try to “get to the core of the issue quickly.” A year later, in 2018, the Washington Post reported that even the simplified briefings were too much of a hassle for Trump:
Trump has opted to rely on an oral briefing of select intelligence issues in the Oval Office rather than getting the full written document delivered to review separately each day...Reading the traditionally dense intelligence book is not Trump’s preferred “style of learning” ...After several months, Trump made clear he was not interested in reviewing a personal copy of the written intelligence report known as the PDB
Critically, years ago intelligence officials warned that “by not reading the daily briefing, the president could hamper his ability to respond to crises in the most effective manner.” Trump’s handling of the pandemic proves that his inability or refusal to pay attention to the intelligence briefings has harmed our country, leading to tens of thousands of deaths that could have been prevented with a faster response.

Trump blames Pelosi?

ABC News reporter Jon Karl asked Trump about the report, to which Trump responded by repeating a fake story about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi:
Karl: “Were you warned about coronavirus back in January?”
Trump: “I think probably a lot more than the Democrats because a month later, Nancy Pelosi was saying, 'Let's dance in the streets of Chinatown.” (video)
Trump then lied about Dr. Fauci saying the virus “was no problem” in late February - Fauci did not say that - and pivoted to talking about the restrictions he placed on travel from China. Karl pressed him again on when he received warnings in his briefings and Trump said: “I would have to check, I want to look as to the exact dates of warnings.”
Trump has repeatedly lied about Pelosi’s February trip to Chinatown in San Francisco. Before any shelter-in-place orders were issued, tourism in the area had fallen dramatically amid public fears of a Chinese virus and prejudice against Asian Americans.
Pelosi while in Chinatown on Feb. 24: “I do think that because it started in China, there’s a concern that are the — is the Chinese government doing what it needed to do early enough, and now as we go forward. But that should not be carried over to Chinatown and San Francisco.”
She did not “dance in the streets” or propose a parade, as Trump has previously claimed. In hindsight, Chinatown was exceptionally well-prepared to handle the coronavirus: According to the New York Times, the community put in a place a plan of action on Feb. 1 “emphasizing frequent hand-cleaning, availability of sanitizers and education on basic hygiene principles, including frequent use of masks.” Trump, on the other hand, did not address the need for such measures until mid-March.

Man-made virus conspiracy

Last Friday, the Trump administration abruptly cut off funding for a project studying the transmission of coronaviruses from bats to humans after conspiracy theories linked the work to a lab in Wuhan, China. An official with the National Institutes of Health claimed the project does not align with “agency priorities,” but the NIH’s strategic plan for studying the coronavirus includes the exact mission of the bat project: understanding the origin and transmission of the novel coronavirus.
Suddenly ending a grant early is an unusual move for the NIH, which typically takes such steps only when there is evidence of scientific misconduct or financial improprieties — neither of which it has alleged took place in this case.
The project is run by a U.S. based nonprofit called EcoHealth Alliance, which invests in health research across the world. The nonprofit has been given millions of dollars in grants over the years, most recently in 2019.
  • Scientists have studied the genetic structure of the novel coronavirus and confirmed that it is naturally-occurring: "Two features of the virus, the mutations in the RBD portion of the spike protein and its distinct backbone, rules out laboratory manipulation as a potential origin for SARS-CoV-2." There is also no evidence that a natural bat virus “escaped” a lab: “the level of genome sequence divergence between SARS-CoV-2 and RaTG13 is equivalent to an average of 50 years (and at least 20 years) of evolutionary change."

Rightwing media

Rightwing media in America seized on an April 11 story in the Daily Mail, a British tabloid, that implied a link between these grants and the spread of the pandemic. On April 17 the story entered the mainstream when a Newsmax reporter asked Trump about the grants, framing it as an Obama Administration decision. In reality, the NIH has awarded grants to EcoHealth since 2005, which distributed the money to fund research in Shanghai, Beijing, and Singapore, as well as Wuhan.
On April 26, Rudy Giuliani appeared on a New York radio show to falsely suggest that the coronavirus was created as a biological weapon, blaming Dr. Fauci and Obama for the spread:
“China for the last 10 to 12 years has been carrying on these experiments, including in this Wuhan laboratory, with animals, and actually making this virus more dangerous,” Giuliani said on the show. “You could say that’s for scientific purposes, or you could say that’s for the purpose of weaponizing them.”

Trump buys in

Days after Giuliani’s interview, the New York Times reported (non-paywalled) that the Trump administration had tasked intelligence agencies to “hunt for evidence to support” the theory that the virus originated in the Wuhan laboratory.
Most intelligence agencies remain skeptical that conclusive evidence of a link to a lab can be found, and scientists who have studied the genetics of the coronavirus say that the overwhelming probability is that it leapt from animal to human in a nonlaboratory setting, as was the case with H.I.V., Ebola and SARS.
Yesterday, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence - currently run by Trump loyalist Richard Grenell - released a statement refuting the conspiracy touted by Trump allies: “The Intelligence Community also concurs with the wide scientific consensus that the COVID-19 virus was not manmade or genetically modified."
Current and former national security officials said they were surprised by the release, and suggested it could be a sign that the intelligence community feels it is being pulled into a political battle. The administration has been pressuring analysts, particularly at the CIA, to search for evidence that the virus came from a lab and that the World Health Organization helped China cover it up, according to a person briefed on the discussions.
Later in the day, Fox News reporter John Roberts asked Trump about the statement, who responded by casting doubt on the director he handpicked for the job:
Roberts: The Director of National Intelligence today put out a statement saying they believe [the coronavirus] was naturally occurring, it was not manmade-
Trump: Who was that-who was that who said that?
R: the Office of the Director of National Intelligence
T: But who in particular? Who was the man who made that statement?
R: It was a statement from the ODNI-
T: Oh, he would know that, huh? National Intelligence. So we’ll see-
R: That would be your Director of National Intelligence, Ric Grenell
T: No I know, I think it’s - I mean you’d have to tell me who specifically, who made the statement?
R: The statement was just put out under the offices of the ODNI.
T: Okay, we’ll see. I mean, I have to see the statement. I just haven’t seen it. (video)
Roberts then redirected the question, asking:
R: Have you seen anything at this point that gives you a high degree of confidence that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was the origin of this virus?
T: Yes, I have. And I think that the WHO should be ashamed of themselves, because they’re like the PR agency for China... They shouldn’t be making excuses when people make horrible mistakes. Especially mistakes that are causing hundreds of people around the world to die. (video)
"And what gives you a high degree of confidence that this originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology?" Roberts asked again, later.
"I can't tell you that," Trump said. "I'm not allowed to tell you that." (video)

White House testing plan

On Monday, Trump unveiled an 8-part plan to increase testing capacity across the country with the goal to reopen states. The presentation slide showed blue checkmarks indicating stage 1 “launch” and stage 2 “scale” are already complete, with only one step remaining to “support opening up again.” Conveniently for the administration, this final step is the responsibility of the governors, who must find a way to fulfill to vague mandates: "develop testing plans and rapid response programs" and "maximize the use of all available testing platforms and venues.”
"This document does nothing new and will accomplish nothing new," Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) said in a statement. "It doesn't set specific, numeric goals, offer a timeframe, identify ways to fix our broken supply chain, or offer any details whatsoever on expanding lab capacity or activating needed manufacturing capacity. Perhaps most pathetically, it attempts to shirk obviously federal responsibilities by assigning them solely to states instead."
The president said the federal government will be shipping states a once-per-month supply large enough to test 2% of the population. Experts say this is not nearly enough:
Paul Romer, a Nobel Prize-winning economist from New York University who has recommended that 50 percent of the population be tested each week, said testing 2 percent “is not enough to test everyone in health care even once, let alone to keep retesting them every day, which is what it would take to keep those who do get infected from going on shift and infecting their colleagues.”
At this pace, testing 2% of the population at a time, it would take almost four years to test the entire U.S. population once, assuming the supply chain problems that have plagued the federal government’s response thus far suddenly clear up.
Despite the White House’s plan, during a press briefing on Wednesday President Trump downplayed the importance of testing:
"You shouldn't be hearing about testing, but that's the last thing [the media] can complain about I guess ...We’ve done incredible with the testing... I don't know that all that [testing] is even necessary." (video)
  • Fact check: Trump has claimed on a regular basis (video) that the U.S. has “tested more than every country combined.” Even just taking the top five countries as far as cumulative number of tests, the U.S. has actually conducted about 20 million fewer tests than those five countries combined.
  • Additionally, what matters most is the per capita testing rate. The United States’ number of COVID-19 tests performed per 1,000 people is below the average of the 36 member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, according to figures released Tuesday by the international body. The United States had conducted 16.4 tests per 1,000 people, compared to Iceland, top of the list, which had tested 135 people per 1,000.

Minorities and low-income communities

Meanwhile, there are still people in the nation dying after being denied a coronavirus test. A Detroit phlebotomist, Deborah Gatewood, reportedly died from coronavirus symptoms on April 17 after being denied a test four times. Her daughter told NBC News that Beaumont Hospital “said she wasn't severe enough and that they weren't going to test her...They told her to just go home and rest."
It is unclear why Gatewood was denied a test so many times, but hospitals across the country have complained of shortages of swabs, reagents and other supplies needed for testing kits, as well as delays in securing test results.
Gatewood’s story also exemplifies the disparities in testing and treatment between minorities and classes in America. From Charlotte, NC, to Illinois to Michigan, African Americans make up a disproportionately large amount of coronavirus cases compared to the demographics of the population. Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, is just 26% black, yet African-Americans account for almost half of the coronavirus cases and 80% of the deaths,
Dr. Barbara Ferrer, LA County health director: People who live in wealthier communities in LA County have been tested more than people who are living in communities where there is less income. (video)

Disparities

Fisher Island, a private island off the coast of Miami, Florida, is the richest ZIP code in the US, home to 800 families and staffed by over 400 workers. While the majority of Americans cannot get tested and some are denied tests even if they present symptoms of COVID-19, residents of the private island have spent tens of thousands of dollars to purchase thousands of rapid COVID-19 blood test kits that detect antibodies.
The purchase and availability of the testing are in sharp contrast to much of the rest of the state, where only about 1 percent of the population has been tested for the deadly virus that has caused a global pandemic… The tests, which are finger-prick blood tests, detect the presence of antibodies, an important aspect that could determine who has already had the disease and is likely immune… The tests haven’t been widely available in South Florida.

Trump sits on funeral aid

ProPublica reported yesterday that Trump has yet to release federal assistance specifically intended to help families cover burial costs for victims of the coronavirus.
Approximately 30 states and territories have requested the funding as the pandemic spreads across the country and struggling families ask for help burying their dead… In response to questions, FEMA stated that the decision on which programs to fund is in Trump’s hands.
...GoFundMe sites that have sprung up in the crisis show the shortfalls many families are facing. Family and friends of Devin Francis, a 44-year old radiology technician in Miami who was about to get married when he died of COVID-19 in early April, raised $4,300 of its $5,000 GoFundMe goal. Other posts cite burial costs for a father and son in New York who both died of the disease, and a chef in Chicago.

Seized supplies

VA masks

Each week we learn of more and more instances of the federal government intervening to seize supplies ordered by states and hospitals. Yet, in many cases, we still don’t know for certain where these supplies are ultimately going and why.
Last weekend, Executive in Charge of the Veterans Health Administration Richard Stone finally acknowledged the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) at the VA and revealed that FEMA blocked an order of 5 million masks from reaching VA facilities. “I had 5 million masks incoming that disappeared,” Stone said, adding that FEMA instead sent the masks to the Strategic National Stockpile.
VA’s four-week supply of equipment — on the shelves of 170 medical centers and in an emergency cache normally used for hurricane responses — was almost gone, and employees have held protests to say they were not safe… After an appeal from Secretary Robert Wilkie to top FEMA officials, the emergency management agency provided VA with 500,000 masks this week, FEMA said in a statement. It did not address questions about the agency’s diverted equipment orders.

Miami firefighters’ masks

Last Wednesday, the director of emergency management for Miami-Dade County (Florida)reported that a shipment of 1 million N95 face masks meant for local firefighters had been seized by FEMA. "We thought we were in pretty good shape with having that amount coming in, and they were — we were — usurped,” Director Frank Rollason said.
FEMA defended such confiscations, saying that bringing too much personal protective equipment into coronavirus hotspots can disrupt supply chains to other parts of the country. However, the White House repeatedly told state and local authorities to obtain supplies wherever they could.
At the time of writing this post, Miami-Dade county surpassed 12,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, the highest in the state.

San Francisco’s challenges

Last Friday, San Francisco Mayor London Breed held a press conference in which she described the difficulties the city has faced obtaining PPE:
“We’ve had issues of our orders being relocated by our suppliers in China,” she said. “For example, we had isolation gowns on their way to San Francisco and they were diverted to France. We’ve had situations when things we’ve ordered that have gone through Customs were confiscated by FEMA to be diverted to other locations. We know everyone is dealing with a serious challenge. Through Customs, we’ve had situations where those items have been taken and put out on the market for the highest bidder, putting cities against cities and states against states.”

Maryland guarding its tests

Maryland’s Republican Gov. Larry Hogan was forced to turn to South Korea to obtain coronavirus test kits in early April, using his wife - a Korean immigrant - as a key lifeline for his state. Speaking about the ordeal yesterday, Hogan described the operation like a top-secret mission, hiding the planeload from the feds out of fear FEMA would confiscate the test kits.
"This was an enormously valuable payload. It was like Fort Knox to us, because it was going to save the lives of thousands of our citizens.”
Like Fort Knox, the supplies are currently at "an undisclosed location” under the protection of the Maryland National Guard and state police. "The administration made it clear over and over again they want the states to take the lead, and we have to go out and do it ourselves, and that's exactly what we did," Hogan said.

Mismanagement of contracts

In 2015, the Obama administration inked a contract with medical manufacturer O&M Halyard called for the creation of a “one-of-a-kind, high-speed machine” that could produce at least 1.5 million N95 masks per day. In September 2018, the company delivered detailed plans for the machine to the Trump administration… but Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) did not proceed with making the machine.
“The Halyard contract was part of an explicit strategy to ensure we could surge mask production in the next crisis,” said Nicole Lurie, who was the HHS assistant secretary for preparedness and response under Barack Obama. “Now we’re dealing with the consequences of not having that capability.”
HHS officials have said that there was no funding to build the machine, but the department that solicited the design had a budget of nearly $1.5 billion for 2020, according to an HHS report.

Contracts to Trump allies

In early March, Mike Bowen, the executive vice president of the medical mask manufacturer Prestige Ameritech, found the perfect way to drum up some federal business: He went on Steve Bannon's podcast, which is highly popular at the White House… A month later, at the explicit request of the White House, Prestige Ameritech had a $9.5 million contract with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Bannon told NBC News that his team put Bowen in touch with White House advisor Peter Navarro, who apparently facilitated the deal.
In the only other agreement with a similar notation that NBC News could find in the 11 years or so of online disclosure of federal contracts, one that was first reported by ProPublica, the Trump White House was named in March as the authority seeking a $96 million deal with the Canadian company AirBoss of America. As ProPublica reported, the deal calls for the delivery of 100,000 respirators and filters to New York and other locations by July 31, and it isn't clear why the White House was eager to award the no-bid contract to the company.

All it takes is a tweet

An electrical engineer in Silicon Valley (with 75 followers) responded to Trump’s tweet about ventilators at the end of March with his own tweet claiming he could “supply ICU ventilators.” Apparently this was all it took for the White House coronavirus to recommend the individual to New York state officials, who quickly paid Oren-Pines $69.1 million for 1,450 ventilators - at least triple the standard retail price of high-end models.
Now, a month later, not a single ventilator has arrived and the contract was terminated. New York state is trying to recover all of the money it paid the man, Yaron Oren-Pines. “The guy was recommended to us by the White House coronavirus task force because they were doing business with him as well,” said the New York state official.

Stepping up

A profile of the efforts of an ex-Google software developer to obtain medical supplies for American healthcare workers demonstrates “that this is not an impossible task and that the Trump administration has failed miserably in this mission.”
Ning Mosberger-Tang, of Boulder, Colorado, founded “Step Up in Crisis” to raise money and purchase PPE from China, despite having no previous experience in procuring medical equipment.
In late April, the first shipment of PPE obtained by Step Up in Crisis—50,000 of the surgical masks and the shoe covers—reached a warehouse in Los Angeles. The rest of the supplies are scheduled to arrive in different shipments through the first three weeks of May… Step Up in Crisis is looking to sell the PPE at its cost to hospitals that can afford to buy the supplies, but it also intends to donate some equipment to facilities that are financially strapped.
...Mosberger-Tang, an American citizen, points out that the current anti-China talk from Donald Trump and his political allies does not help on this front: “I wish the US government could be smarter in dealing with China. They know this manufacturing is in China. There is no point to calling this the ‘Chinese virus’ and irritate the Chinese government and end up not getting the equipment you need.”

FEMA stepping back

Other than seizing supplies, what is FEMA up to? The Trump administration is reportedly planning to end the role of FEMA’s National Response Coordination Center in managing the federal response to the coronavirus crisis. Its responsibilities will be handed over to unnamed persons at HHS.
House Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney responded:
President Trump seems to be declaring ‘Mission Accomplished’ while hundreds of Americans are dying every day, communities across the country are facing critical shortages of test kits and life-saving medical equipment, and millions of Americans are out of work and need assistance. The Administration has not briefed Congress on this move and has not identified a clear, unified command structure for the continued federal response.”

Hydroxychloroquine update

Federal prosecutors are investigating a New York doctor who appeared on Fox News frequently to promote the use of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19. The doctor, Vladimir “Zev” Zelenko, has been in touch with the White House
Zelenko came to the feds’ attention when - get this - Jerome Corsi (an associate of Roger Stone) accidentally sent an email intended for Zelenko to another “Z” name in his address book — federal prosecutor Aaron Zelinsky, a member of Mueller’s team.
Zelinsky is tasked now with investigating coronavirus-related crimes in the Maryland U.S. attorney’s office, as part of a directive from U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr to prioritize such cases. The department already has charged a medley of fraudsters for peddling fake cures
Vaccine expert Dr. Rick Bright is preparing to submit a whistleblower complaint documenting Trump’s push of an unproven anti-malarial drug. “It is expected that Bright’s complaint, when revealed, will shed new light on the political pressure exerted by the Trump administration on health officials to back up the president’s sweeping praise of the drugs as a key weapon against Covid-19.”

States and reopening
  • On Thursday, hundreds of protestors - some armed - stormed Michigan’s state capitol to protest the governor’s use of emergency powers to respond to the coronavirus pandemic: A tightly packed crowd of protesters, some carrying rifles, attempted to enter the floor of the legislative chamber, and were held back by a line of state police and capitol staff...“Let us in! Let us in!” the protesters chanted (video).
    • Friday morning, Trump tweeted his support for the armed protestors: “The Governor of Michigan should give a little, and put out the fire. These are very good people, but they are angry. They want their lives back again, safely! See them, talk to them, make a deal.”

Informative reads:
  • The new coronavirus is likely to keep spreading for at least another 18 months to two years—until 60% to 70% of the population has been infected, a team of longstanding pandemic experts predicted in a report released Thursday.
  • Center for Global Development's Jeremy Konyndyk: it looks like US-style lockdowns are enough to freeze transmission in place (R=1) but not enough to drive it down (R<1). Which suggests that without further measures, we could remain on this plateau for quite a while... for each month we remain on the plateau, we risk losing more Americans than we lost in nearly a decade in Vietnam. If we spend May like we spent April, we will blow past 100k dead in weeks.
    • The way forward is very clear: test, trace, isolate, protect. Putting that infrastructure into place can bring down cases to a manageable level, enable us to relax lockdowns, and move to a posture of sustainable suppression. But that will be tough to deliver without the feds... We are stuck in an untenable holding pattern as long as federal leadership means vague slide decks and empty assurances rather than test kits, PPE, and accountability.

2020.02.28 00:52 Algernone25 On Circle's Edge, aka A Hater's Guide to the 2020 Professional Disc Golf Association Tour Season

Can this truly be called a Haters Guide? Well, ask yourself. Are there haters? I see haters. Is this a guide? I see a guide. So shut up and enjoy the shitposting, because it's not like there's much better going on unless you're in a hockey town or REALLY into baseball and even then, things might still be looking shit (looking at you Detroit.)

What is Disc Golf?

Disc Golf is the XFL to regular golf's NFL. Most of the stuff you like about the original, minus lot of the stuff you hate, and traditionalists need not apply.
The players? Forget all the stuffy St. Andrews shit, t-shirts khakis and sneakers are fine. The gear? Forget bulky bags and exploited caddies, grab a backpack and you're all set. The pricetag? How does top of the line discs at $25 and greens fees of nothing strike you? The broadcast? Half an hour for the front 9, half an hour for the back, only watching the players at the top that you give a shit about. The commentators? Active touring pros who don't just know the course, they're PLAYING in the tournament they do commentary for. (Example: Round 1 on Friday, comms for round 1 on Saturday morning, then an afternoon tee time for round 2, and so on) The viewing experience? We've got all the tech - hole layout drone footage, slow mo shots, shot tracers, live scoring, you name it. The courses? A beautiful mix of lush open fairways, treacherous rough where the grass goes up to your waist, looming water hazards, and stalwart trees all standing between you and the basket. Sure these guys make it LOOK easy, slinging discs a mile with a casual flick of the wrist and curling them around trees like a goddamned Wanted sequel, but it's nowhere as easy as they make it look - that's why they're pros.

The Schedule

Every week there are dozens of Disc Golf tournaments around the world. But like regular golf, we don't give a shit about most of them because they're at amateur courses for amateur players. (I say this not as a jab against the Ams, they're still shitloads better than me. But B-tier and C-tier events aren't what this Hater's Guide is about.)
In terms of tournaments we DO give a shit about, there's 20 of them: eleven Disc Golf Pro Tour events, (marked with the [DGPT] tag below) six PDGA National Tour Events, and four Major Championships.

If you're not the kind to go and watch people throw frisbees live, coverage for these tournaments will be found across youtube - JomezPro has been tapped to provide Lead Card coverage for all of the listed events except for the European Open. (TheSpinTV is likely to pick up that one) Second and Third card coverage will be provided by other channels like TheSpinTV and Central Coast Disc Golf. If you ARE the kind to go and watch people throw frisbees live (SeatGeek will not help you here, sorry ad buyers) you'll quickly get addicted. Or maybe weirded out. One of the two.

The Players

Right, the part of the Hater's Guide anyone gives a fuck about. Sorry it took a while, but I have to expect that most of you know about as much about disc golf as I did this time last year, which was fuckall. Obviously there's hundreds of players in each tournament field and it would be impossible to cover all of them, so let's just skip to the people we can reasonably expect to bring home hardware this year. Obviously I can't discount an unknown having a breakout year, but the stars are stars for a reason so let's stick to them.

Paul McBeth - Discraft
Ladies and Gentlemen, if you want either a perennial favorite to cheer on a la Tiger Woods, or a villain who exemplifies everything wrong with the sport a la...Tiger Woods, look no further than Disc Golf's Reigning GOAT. In 2019 McBeth made history, leaving Innova lured by an unheard of 4 year, $250,000/year sponsorship offer by their chief rival. He rewarded them by winning two majors bringing his total to TWELVE, shooting an 18-under par round for the SECOND time (no other disc golfer has accomplished the feat on the national stage) and having one of the most dominant years in recent history. In 2020 he's primed to continue his reign, though he did suffer a foot injury over the winter and just recently was able to walk without a boot. He should be fine, but injuries have bitten PMcB before - time will tell how he bounces back.

Ricky Wysocki - Innova Champion Discs
If McBeth is the Tiger Woods of disc golf, then Ricky is the closest you get to Phil Mickelson. Charismatic, incredibly talented, has a reputation for choking away titles he's got no business choking away, among his most recent the 2019 European Open where he had a 4-stroke lead going into the final round over McBeth - it didn't hold. That said, he's an incredibly gifted athlete and has shown his fair share of resilience - carding a +8 in the first round of the 2019 world championships and still bouncing back to get second place for example. (losing by a stroke to, who else? Paul) If there's any opportunity for the raptor to pounce, don't be surprised if he does it.

Simon Lizotte - Discmania
If you give no fucks about rivalries and sponsorship drama and just want to see long bombs, may I introduce you to the German wunderkind. Eight hundred feet from tee to green? No problem, that's maybe two shots on a slow day. Five hundred feet? Hmm...let's use a fucking PUTTER, that should be the right distance. He always puts up strong performances, and he's due for a few big wins on tour - the 2019 Portland Open slipped away on the 72nd hole, so you can be sure he's hungry for it.

Eagle McMahon - Discmania
The United States and obsession with one-upsmanship -name me a better duo. Easily able to match Simon with not only the crazy distance, but the crazy lines needed to get those absurd shots to actually work. While he's been known for stupid distance, the 2019 season showed that he's added another potent weapon to his game: finesse and touch. He's also got grit, playing the last round of the USDGC with a broken finger and still putting up a solid number - but his true test will be in his ability to keep it together. That broken finger? Self-inflicted when he punched his putter after a missed tap-in. That PDXO win that Simon choked away? Eagle got into a playoff, then blew it by throwing his tee shot out of bounds on the first sudden death hole. There's a high ceiling here, but will he keep himself in check to reach it?

James Conrad - Innova Champion Discs
The Man of A Thousand Putters, James has been a staple on tour for some time, finally claiming his first major in 2019 with a very overdue USDGC victory. With that monkey off his back, expect 2020 to be much of his same style of disc golf - calm throwing, calculated aggression, and nailing tight lines through the woods that can stop the rest of the field cold. And after all the close calls last year, the man is due for an Ace on the national tour - don't be surprised if Sportscenter gets a call.

Kevin Jones - Prodigy Discs
Prodigy is not the biggest manufacturer, and they have something of a reputation among the community that their players always seem to do better once they leave. KJUSA is the biggest star they have, and while he's been...pretty good under their deal, he's not shown some of the flashes of brilliance that people have expected. He's definitely got the talent, but if this season turns flat again, we could have another scramble in the free agent market.

Emerson Keith - Latitude 64 Discs
Emerson came out of nowhere in 2018 as a massive tournament grinder, playing SIXTY-SEVEN sanctioned tournaments during that tour season - many of them smaller B-tier or C-tier events, but it clearly worked for him as he capped off 2019 with a very impressive 4th place finish at Worlds, leading for the first three rounds before finally running out of steam against Paul and Ricky. He's still young, and another big charge at a big tournament title in 2020 should be seen as much more likely than not. Sleep on this kid at your own risk.

Nate Sexton & "Big" Jeremy Koling - Innova Champion Discs
The pairing of "Big Sexy" has been the leading voice of disc golf the past few years as the primary commentary crew for JomezPro and will be this year as well. Both long time veterans of the sport, they still have the arm speed and power to crush shots and hit tight gaps. Nate proved this by winning the Las Vegas Classic last week by two strokes, and Jeremy tied for second at the USDGC last year, losing to James by a stroke. Whether they're in the booth or on the course, it's never a bad video when they're in it.

Brodie Smith - Discraft
Yes, THAT Brodie Smith. The trick shot artist, ultimate frisbee magician, Basically-Sixth-Wheel-of-Dude-Perfect Brodie Smith. He's been picked up by Discraft on a one-year sponsor's exemption, and while I can't say I EXPECT anything out of him, the dude knows frisbees inside and out, so most of the skills should transfer pretty decently. Frankly I would expect him to stay around the B-tier events, maybe pop up for the occasional A-Tier and NT, but who knows? Maybe we'll see some Dark Horse Magic. Just...you know, don't bet on it.

Paige Pierce - Discraft
Yes she's the only woman on this list. No, she's not the only woman out on the course - the Woman's professional disc golf scene is just as vibrant and competitive as the male side, and to imply otherwise would be a grave offense to their skill and dedication. They just don't get the same airtime, whether that's warranted or right is a question I'll leave to non-shitposters. What is warranted is respect for Paige's ability to hang with the big boys, matching them with position and sound play even if she isn't the biggest bomber. Discraft recognized that, and rewarded the five-time world champion with a new contract to pry her away from Dynamic Discs - allegedly the same 4x250 they gave five-time world champion Paul Mcbeth last year. I'm not saying she'll reward them with the same dominance he did...but I wouldn't be shocked if she did.

If you've been paying attention, you'll notice that yes, as I upload this the first round of the first of these 20 tournaments is live underway. Videos for round one will probably be up tomorrow afternoon, or you can use the UDisc app to check scorecards in real time. Or if you're not in a frozen over tundra, use the app to see if there's a disc golf course near you. Who knows? You probably won't be an overnight star, but you might just find a cheap hobby to get you out of the house when the Yinzer's away.

2019.12.22 14:58 1_Am_Providence Welp, it’s happening.

Hey everyone.
I’m a 31 year old guy who is about to separate from my 29 year old wife and I’m devastated. Here’s the story.
We started dating March of 2017 and everything started out great. She was from New York City, I lived in CT and we found each other through OkCupid. She’s a fiery little redhead and I’m a laid back guy so we knew that we were both different from the get-go. Something that never really happened though was the “spark,” the deep connection with one another. Unfortunately, we both had a history of dating terrible people so when we found each other, we were floored that we found someone who treated us well and kinda went full bore. She ended up moving into my apartment later that year.
That December, we decided to move down to North Carolina for a change of pace. She was able to transfer to her company’s office in Charlotte and I had just graduated with my bachelors. So we moved down in March, got a puppy and an apartment, and things were working out great. I ended up getting a job for the same construction firm she works for and have been kicking ass there since.
The December following our move, I popped the question while we flew up to our family for Christmas. She said yes and in February, we got hitched at the courthouse because we both agreed it wasn’t worth going into debt for a wedding. That wasn’t an issue at all, we actually had a wonderful day. We planned to have our honeymoon in May and decided to buy a house instead of renting because we hate apartments. So honeymoon happened and as soon as we got back, we closed on the house and moved in. So if you haven’t picked up yet...we rushed. Like light speed rushed. Every couple months she brought up that she still didn’t feel the connection and despite all I did, I couldn’t reestablish something that was never really there.
So come now. During thanksgiving, wife called me (she drove back home Monday, I flew up Wednesday because I couldn’t get off work) and told me that she had basically been unhappy for the past 8-10 months and it was essentially over. I went up there and after a lot of talking concluded that she was essentially checked out but I was going to fight for our marriage. So I’ve been fighting tooth and nail to reconnect with her but it’s been a very rough month on me. I love her still more than words can say, it’s not just losing my wife but losing the one I was planning on growing old with together.
So yesterday I couldn’t take it anymore and had an outburst. We were trying to put on a brave face to get through the holidays because her family is flying down but I just couldn’t anymore. We had a long talk that ended with “Just to hear it, there’s nothing we can do to save this?” “I’m sorry, but no.” Those words hit me like a freight train and I’m still reeling from it.
I bought us a vacation for her Xmas gift in early Jan so we’re still going to go on it as friends because it’s non-refundable and honestly, we still get along really well—we’ll have a great time. I’m also going to just celebrate Xmas with her family while they’re here, we’ve always gotten along well and I’d rather that than spend it alone. But by god are these next few weeks going to be rough.
My tentative plan is to try to relocate to the CT office if our company and get out of here as soon as we can sell the house. She’ll be staying in NC because she wants the time on her own, which I support.
I’m sorry for the rant, reddit. I’m just in a really bad spot right now and don’t have anyone within a 12 hour drive to talk to. I keep trying to convince myself that I’m still young and everything will be fine but it’s so difficult to lose your other half of the last 3 years.

2019.04.05 06:00 madman1101 DUMB LAWS 2019, YOU GUYS HAVE SOME FUCKING STUPID RULES.

ALRIGHT FUCKERS, I’M RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS FOR TRASH TALK THREADS, SO I’M BREAKING DOWN DUMB LAWS IN YOUR CITIES/STATES. LET’S SEE WHAT DUMB SHIT YOU GUYS HAVE
OTTAWA VS NASHVILLE
OTTAWA, HOME OF THE CANADIAN CONTENT LAW. WELL, ALL OF CANADA REALLY, BUT 30 PERCENT OF ALL CONTENT ON RADIO STATIONS MUST BE “CANADIAN”. WHETHER IT’S COMPOSED, SANG, PRODUCED OR WRITTEN, 30 PERCENT OF ALL RADIO MUST BE CANADIAN. I DON’T LISTEN TO CANADIAN MUSIC BUT I CAN ONLY IMAGINE IT’S ABOUT MAPLE SYRUP AND JUSTIN BIEBER.
MEANWHILE IN NASHVILLE, NO PERSON MAY KEEP A CHEETAH AS A PET. YEAH I DON’T KNOW. IT’S TITLE 8.16.020. THIS LAW ALSO PERTAINS TO PUMAS AND OTHER WILDLIFE AS WELL. WHAT THE FUCK NASHVILLE, WAS THIS SUCH A PROBLEM YOU HAD TO MAKE A LAW FOR IT?
REAL MONARCHS VS RENO 1868
I DECIDED I DIDN’T WANT MORE CONTEXT BUT YOU CAN LOOK IT UP UNDER TITLE 5.54.310. IN SALT LAKE COUNTY, ALL AUCTIONS CAN’T BE ADVERTISED BY HIRING TROMBONE PLAYERS TO PLAY IN THE STREETS. I DON’T GET WHY THIS IS A LAW. I MEAN, WHO HIRES TROMBONERS TO PROMOTE AN AUCTION? FUCKIN MORMONS.
I GUESS THAT’S A MORE UNIQUE PROBLEM THAN RENO, WHO’S SECTION 8.12.045 STATES THAT YOU MAY NOT PLACE A BENCH IN THE MIDDLE OF ANY STREET. I GUESS THAT’S A GOOD IDEA BUT I’M NOT SURE WHY A LAW WAS NEEDED FOR THIS.
SWOPE PARK VS BETHLEHEM
I DON’T HAVE A LINK FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THIS ONE BUT APPARENTLY IN KANSAS CITY, INSTALLATION OF BATHTUBS WITH FOUR LEGS RESEMBLING ANIMAL PAWS IS PROHIBITED. WHAT THE HELL? THAT’S SOMETHING EVERYONE WANTS RIGHT? I DO NOW.
I COULDN’T FIND ANY DUMB LAWS FOR BETHLEHEM SPECIFICALLY, BUT I DID FIND ONE IN “BENSALEM” WHICH IS CLOSE ENOUGH, RIGHT? APPARENTLY PEOPLE CONVICTED OF FELONIES ARE NOT ABLE TO OPERATE A BINGO GAME. WHY THE DISCRIMINATION? I MEAN, SORRY SEC 105-13 OF ORDINANCE 89-0-7. BUT THAT’S SOME BULLSHIT.
LOUISVILLE CITY VS PITTSBURGH RIVERHOUNDS
IN KENTUCKY YOU AREN’T ALLOWED TO HUNT FROM A MOVING VEHICLE. THIS IS A MAJOR HIT TO THE STATE, LET ALONE THE CITY OF LOUISVILLE. NEARLY EVERYONE IN KENTUCKY OWNS A GUN, ALONGSIDE A CARTON OF CAMEL BLUES. IMAGINE HOW MANY KENTUCKY CHILDREN GO HUNGRY BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS CAN’T USE THE “DRIVE-THRU” FOR DINNER.
IN PENNSYLVANIA IT IS ILLEGAL TO SING WHILE IN THE SHOWER. YES, THE SAME PLACE WHERE WE ALL BECOME AMERICAN IDOLS, YOU’LL GET CARTED OFF TO JAIL FOR TRYING TO BE THE NEXT KELLY CLARKSON WHILE SCRUBBING YOUR FILTHY TAINT. THIS IS WHY MOST PEOPLE IN PITTSBURGH BATHE IN THE RIVER, AS THERE IS NO CLAUSE FOR BATHING IN PUBLIC. PUBLIC INDECENCY, HOWEVER IS ANOTHER ISSUE...
NCFC VS MEMPHIS
NORTH CAROLINA FC ENCOMPASSES ALL OF NORTH CAROLINA. THE BIGGEST ONE THAT STOOD OUT TO ME IS THAT YOU MUST PAY PROPERTY TAX ON YOUR DOG IN ROCKY MOUNT, NC. I MEAN, I LOVE MY DOG. HE’S FUCKIN AWESOME. BUT PROPERTY TAX ON A FAMILY MEMBER? DAMN. THAT’S SAVAGE.
THEN THERE’S MEMPHIS WHO HAS A FEW DUMB ONES, LIKE IT IS ILLEGAL FOR A WOMAN TO DRIVE A CAR UNLESS THERE’S A MAN EITHER RUNNING OR WALKING IN FRONT OF IT WAVING A RED FLAG TO WARN APPROACHING MOTORISTS AND PEDESTRIANS. THAT ONE IS AN INTERESTING AND I BELIEVE A LAW THAT IS NO LONGER ENFORCED. I MEAN, YEAH… YIKES. MEANWHILE, THERE’S A 10 DOLLAR PERMIT THAT IS REQUIRED IF YOU WANT TO PANHANDLE. THIS ISN’T SOME ANTIQUATED LAW EITHER. IT’S NOT EVEN 25 YEARS OLD. IT MAKES ME WONDER HOW OFTEN THIS ONE IS ENFORCED. IS PANHANDLING THAT BAD YOU NEED TO ENFORCE IT WITH PERMITS?
ATLUTD2 VS ST LOUIS
ATTENTION GIRAFFE OWNERS IN ATLANTA, PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR GIRAFFES TIED UP AGAINST TELEPHONE POLES OR PUBLIC STREET LAMPS. WE DO NOT KNOW HOW MANY TIMES WE’VE HAD TO TELL EVERYONE, SO THIS IS YOUR FINAL WARNING.
A CITY THAT WAS BASICALLY FOUNDED ON BEER, IN ST. LOUIS YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SIT ON THE CURB OF A PUBLIC STREET AND DRINK BEER FROM A BUCKET. HOW ABOUT YOU DON’T TELL ME HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE AND I WON’T TELL YOU HOW TO LIVE YOURS.
TAMPA BAY VS HARTFORD
NEVER GO TO TAMPA. ACCORDING TO ORD. NO. 89-238, IT IS ILLEGAL TO EXPOSE UR BOOBIES WHILE TOPLESS DANCING. WELL, I AM NO EXPERT BUT TOPLESS DANCING KIND OF REQUIRES, YOU KNOW, NO TOPS. MY EYES ARE UP HERE, YOU PERV.
IN HARTFORD CT., IT IS ILLEGAL TO EDUCATE A DOG. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS OR HOW IT APPLIES, BUT I AM SURE IT WAS TO PREVENT SOME SORT OF CANINE UPRISING AGAINST HUMANITY. SOUNDS LIKE SOME KIND OF SILLY RICK AND MORTY EPISODE. THEY MUST BE BORED IN CONNECTICUT.
BIRMINGHAM VS RED BULLS 2
ALABAMA IS FULL OF SOME GOOD ONES. BUT APPARENTLY NOT IN BIRMINGHAM. OH WELL, IN MOBILE, NOBODY CAN USE A “FUNK BALL” WITHIN CITY LIMITS. I HAD TO LOOK UP WHAT A FUNK BALL WAS. BECAUSE I DIDN’T KNOW. APPARENTLY IT’S THE SAME THING AS A STINK BOMB. BUT WHO THE FUCK CALLS THEM FUNK BALLS? THAT MIGHT BE THE DUMBEST PART ABOUT THIS LAW.
NEW YORK RED BULLS 2 DON’T EVEN PLAY IN NEW YORK. LETS GO TO NEW JERSEY. WHERE YOU CAN’T PUMP YOUR OWN GAS. OREGON WAS THE SAME WAY UNTIL RECENTLY. AND I DON’T GET IT. THERE WAS A HUGE UPROAR. YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING IDIOTS. I HAVE BEEN PUMPING GAS MY WHOLE LIFE, WELL, MY WHOLE DRIVING LIFE, AND A LITTLE LONGER AND I’VE NEVER DIED…. YET. SO, WHAT THE FUCK NEW JERSEY. THAT’S ONE WAY TO FORCE JOB CREATION I GUESS.
OKC VS PORTLAND
IN OKLAHOMA CITY, CODE 1970, § 21-2 MAKES IT TO WHERE THE MAYOR MAY NOT GO ON STRIKE AGAINST THE CITY. I MEAN IF I WERE MAYOR OF THAT CITY I WOULD GO ON STRIKE. NOTHING TO DO BUT EAT SONIC DRIVE-IN EVERY DAY AND STARE OUT INTO THE BEIGE HORIZON OF NOTHINGNESS.
PORTLAND IS TRULY A WEIRD CITY. ORD. NO 159474 MAKES IT “ILLEGAL TO CAUSE SOMEONE TO THINK THEIR PROPERTY MAY BE SUBJECTED TO “OFFENSIVE PHYSICAL CONTACT”” “DAVE KEPT LOOKING AT MY DAUGHTER’S BABY DOLL AS IF HE WERE GOING TO START FUCKING IT. I JUST GOT THAT VIBE FROM HIM.”
RGV VS NEW MEXICO
WE HAVE ALREADY BEEN OVER THE FACT THAT NOTHING EVER HAPPENS IN THE RGV AREA. SO WE’RE GOING TO DALLAS FOR THIS ONE WHERE IT IS ILLEGAL FOR SOME FUCKING REASON TO POSSESS REALISTIC DILDOS. DILDI? DILDOES? WHAT’S THE POINT? WHY DOES THE APPEARANCE OF SEX TOYS NEED LAWS ABOUT THEM?
I’M GOING TO GO AHEAD AND QUOTE THIS ONE, BECAUSE IF I JUST SAID IDIOTS WEREN’T ALLOWED TO VOTE IN NEW MEXICO, NOBODY WOULD BELIEVE ME.
“EVERY CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES, WHO IS OVER THE AGE OF TWENTY-ONE YEARS, AND HAS RESIDED IN NEW MEXICO TWELVE MONTHS, IN THE COUNTY NINETY DAYS, AND IN THE PRECINCT IN WHICH HE OFFERS TO VOTE THIRTY DAYS, NEXT PRECEDING THE ELECTION, EXCEPT IDIOTS, [...], SHALL BE QUALIFIED TO VOTE AT ALL ELECTIONS FOR PUBLIC OFFICERS.”
I MEAN, THAT’S A COOL LAW I GUESS, BUT ARE THERE THAT MANY IDIOTS IN NEW MEXICO THAT IT’S NOW ENFORCEABLE BY LAW? HOW DO YOU EVEN ENFORCE THAT?
SAN ANTONIO VS LAS VEGAS
THE FIRST AND ONLY LAW ON THIS LIST THAT WAS INFLUENCED BY OZZY OSBOURNE TO MY KNOWLEDGE. YOU CANNOT URINATE ON THE ALAMO. WHY FUCKING NOT? I SHOULD BE ABLE TO PISS WHEREVER I GODDAMN PLEASE. THIS IS AMERICA DAMMIT. THANKS OZZY, YOU RUINED EVERYTHING FOR ALL OF US.
LAS VEGAS IS IN A FUCKING DESERT. THAT MEANS THERE’S CAMELS. APPARENTLY THERE WAS SUCH A LARGE ISSUE OF PEOPLE TRAVERSING THE TERRAIN THAT IT’S ILLEGAL NOW TO DRIVE A CAMEL ON THE HIGHWAY. FIRST OFF, I DIDN’T REALIZE THAT ALL THE SPEED DEMONS WERE TURNING IN THEIR SPORTS CARS FOR CAMELS. I KINDA WANNA BREAK THIS LAW NOW THAT I KNOW IT EXISTS.
LA GALAXY 2 VS TULSA
IN HOLLYWOOD IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE MORE THAN 2,000 SHEEP DOWN HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD AT ONE TIME. EITHER SOMEONE IS MAKING A “BABE” SEQUEL OR THAT GUY IS IN FOR A LOOOOOONG NIGHT. (IN CASE YOU IDIOTS DIDN’T GET IT THAT WAS A SHEEP FUCKING REFERENCE.)
IN TULSA IT IS ILLEGAL TO OPEN A SODA WITHOUT A LICENSED ENGINEER PRESENT. FIRST LET’S GET OUT OF THE WAY WHO GIVES A FUCK WHETHER IT IS CALLED “POP” OR “SODA”, SOMEONE OBVIOUSLY COULDN’T GET THIS ONE RIGHT THE FIRST TIME AND NEEDED TO CALL IN A PROFESSIONAL.
OCSC VS COLORADO SPRINGS
APPARENTLY ORANGE COUNTY IS VERY GOOD ABOUT THEIR LAWS, MEANWHILE JUST OUTSIDE OF THE COUNTY IN RIVERSIDE IT IS ILLEGAL TO CARRY LUNCH DOWN THE STREET BETWEEN 11 AND 1 O’CLOCK. I DON’T GET IT. WHY CAN’T I CARRY MY LUNCH? I MEAN, IS IT HURTING ANYONE? WHAT IF I WANT TO JUST WALK AROUND CARRYING FOOD AT THAT TIME AND CALL IT…. DINNER? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? IS IT STILL ILLEGAL? WHO KNOWS?
THERE IS A LAW ON THE BOOKS THAT MAKES IT LEGAL TO WEAR A HOLSTERED 6 SHOOTER REVOLVER WITHIN CITY LIMITS, EXCEPT ON SUNDAY, ELECTION DAY, OR HOLIDAYS. THAT’S ODDLY SPECIFIC. WHAT NOW? WHO KNOWS? I SURELY DON’T. WHY IS THIS LAW SO FUCKING SPECIFIC ON DATES? HOW IS THIS ENFORCED? NOBODY KNOWS.
PHOENIX VS FRESNO
PHOENIX DOESN’T REALLY HAVE ANY “DUMB” LAWS, BUT IN ARIZONA IT IS ILLEGAL TO MANUFACTURE AND DISTRIBUTE IMITATION COCAINE. STATUTE 13-3453. I FEEL SORRY FOR ALL THE GROCERY STORES THAT CAN’T CARRY “STORE BRAND” COCAINE BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE A MARKET I WANT TO TAP INTO AFTER I RETIRE.
IN FRESNO, CA., ORDINANCE 1076 STATES YOU MAY NOT ANNOY A LIZARD IN A CITY PARK. “GOD DAMN IT, JIMMY. THAT GECKO DOES NOT WANT TO HEAR YOUR STUPID JOKES. THAT’S NOT THE ONE FROM THE GEICO COMMERCIAL EITHER.”
SACRAMENTO VS AUSTIN
IN CALIFORNIA IT IS UNLAWFUL FOR ANIMALS TO MATE PUBLICLY WITHIN 1,500 FEET OF A SCHOOL, TAVERN OR PLACE OF WORSHIP. ANYWHERE ELSE IS OKAY, SUCH AS A SAFEWAY OR AN IN-AND-OUT BURGER. WHO DOESN’T LOVE DINNER AND A SHOW?
IN AUSTIN PER CITY ORDINANCE IT IS ILLEGAL TO CARRY WIRE CUTTERS IN YOUR POCKET. THIS WAS FROM AN OLD WEST PRACTICE OF COWBOYS CUTTING BARBED WIRE FENCES TO ALLOW THEIR CATTLE HERDS TO PASS THROUGH OTHER PEOPLE’S PROPERTY. APPARENTLY THAT WAS A BIG ISSUE. I AM SURE THERE IS A MEOW WOLF EXHIBIT ABOUT THIS SOMEWHERE.
CHARLESTON VS CHARLOTTE
IN CHARLESTON THE FIRE DEPARTMENT MAY BLOW UP YOUR HOUSE. THAT’S IT. THAT’S THE LAW. I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS. THAT’S PRETTY TIGHT.
CHARLOTTE IS PRETTY RIDICULOUS. I GET IT THAT YOU DON’T WANT PEOPLE TO WALK AROUND NAKED, BUT DAMN. WOMEN MUST HAVE THEIR BODIES COVERED BY 16 YARDS OF CLOTH? I DON’T THINK THAT LAW IS STILL IN EFFECT BUT THAT’S SOME BULLSHIT EVEN WHEN IT WAS WRITTEN. HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO MEASURE THAT?

2018.09.10 01:38 CFB_Referee Florence & Football

With football season comes hurricane season. No, not you Richt.
Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane. What does that mean? There are now hurricane, tropical storm, and storm surge watches and warnings in effect on parts of the East Coast. What is a watch vs a warning? However, with this, please keep in mind that these categories are based on windspeed and do not factor in things like storm surge or rain. Here's some more information about this from NWS Newport/Morehead. And here is some information about the storm surge.
Please look to local news, local weather, and local and state emergency management agencies to find out more about how you may be affected, if you need to evacuate, and steps on getting prepared. Please everyone stay safe.
Here's an article on how "For Coastal Colleges, Evacuation Means Far More Than Just Moving People."

2018.09.02 03:32 assessment_bot [ Non-Fatal ] [ 07/26/2018 ] Cessna 150, Matthews/ NC

On July 26, 2018, about 1900 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 150B, N1193Y, was substantially damaged during a forced landing in Matthews, North Carolina. The student pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated by the pilot under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations part 91 as a solo-instructional flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the local flight that originated at Wilgrove Air Park (8A6), Charlotte, North Carolina at 1810.
The pilot reported that the preflight procedures, taxi, takeoff, and departure were uneventful. About 40 minutes into the flight, about 1,800 feet above mean sea level, he noticed that the airplane was "sluggish" and would not "maintain lift." The engine indications were normal with no sputtering or hesitation noted. He applied carburetor heat and the engine speed dropped about 300 rpm. The airplane was still sluggish, so he turned off the carburetor heat. Unable to maintain altitude long enough to reach the airport, he landed the airplane in a grass field adjacent to a church. During the landing rollout, the airplane nosed over and came to rest, inverted.
An inspector with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) responded to the accident site and examined the wreckage. He reported that the wings and fuselage sustained structural damage.
The pilot held a student pilot certificate and reported 3.1 hours of dual instruction and 15 hours of solo flight time.
The wreckage was retained by the pilot for further examination by the FAA.

I had kind of always wanted to be a runner. It seemed like this great thing -- mentally and physically. Also you see those people who look like gazelles while running.... And all the shirtless people.... begins daydreaming
Most memorable running moment?
This is hard to pick... I have so many. I've developed a fantastic group of running friends, both online and IRL. The time that stands out isn't because I did an amazing job running or anything, it's all about the community.
I was running a 24-hour trail relay at one of my happy places (USNWC). Free style relay -- there were 7 loops to choose from of varying difficulty, distance (1-6 miles), and points (.5-8) I was fairly punch drunk, having gotten only 90 minutes of sleep, and sustaining myself on Monster Ultra and dancing. I had made so many friends during this relay around tent city (if you've met me you know that during a race I'm high energy and just generally very social). There was about 20 minutes left of the relay. Everyone was lined around the finish line, cheering runners on. It's incredibly joyful. One of my teammates turns to me and says, "Pixel, do you want to do another loop around the channel? We'll have just enough time for one more runner."
We don't need the points... but more never hurt. I sprint back to my bag, pull on my shoes, and grab my bib. I stand under the start/finish arch. I nervous dance. Why am I nervous? I have no idea. All around me is screaming, cheering, hugging, laughing. I see my teammate tearing up the hill towards me. I fist bump the runner standing next to me for good luck. I step forward into my teammmates sight-line, he hands off the slap bracelet, I throw myself down the hill at a reckless speed. Turning the corner to the channel, a runner begins keeping pace with me. "Control your breathing," he says. "Pull back a little." I look up, it's my roomie, cheerleader, running coach, and bestie extraordinaire (the cute guy from above, actually!). I listen and we fall into a cadence that is on the brink of the pain cave. I only need to sustain this for one mile.
He directs and encourages me and I get around the channel faster than ever before. I buckle down for the steep finish line hill and he peels off to cheer with our team. I hear the RD "fifteen seconds, guys!!" I look up. Everyone is clustered around the finish. Some people have made tunnels of their arms to run through, high fives abound. People begin shouting my name and cheering for me (all that socializing before? It made for an amazing finish.) It is a cacophony of joy. My face is contorted with a mixture of euphoria and physical pain. I begin crying. I plow into the runners at the finish line, all giving me hugs, pats, fist bumps. Ushering me to the check in table. I crossed the line with 5 seconds left on the clock.
Our team didn't exactly need that half point for the run, but I did. It was magical.
Do you have a running mantra?
There's a million things I haven't done... just you wait.. just you wait... bursts into Hamilton songs
What time of day do you prefer to run?
The idea of running in the morning is so great. But I hate mornings and likewise they hate me. I tend to run later in the day. I'd rather have heat than humidity anyway. I also love running at night, even though I don't do it that often.
Any big races coming up?
Iron Mountain 50 miler, which is a tune up for Uwharrie 100k. Which may kill me.
What are your short-term running goals?
Keep going? I have those races coming up, but if I don't hit my arbitrary time goals, no big deal. I just love being out on the trails with friends.
What are your long-term running goals?
Run a hundo. Begin doing speed work to get 5k time down. Keep going.
What's one piece of running advice you’d give to the younger version of yourself?
Not running advice, exactly, but I'd encourage young Pixel to be active in some way. Maybe more walks, more biking, even if not running. It would've helped my mental state in high school and college a LOT.
What is something you need to work on to become a better runner?
Consistency is still a struggle. Mental fortitude is probably the number one thing I need to work on. It affects consistency quite a bit, and it also slows me down or stops me when I could keep going. I don't know how to work on that other than to just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
What is your current shoe choice?
Road: I'm alternating between Topo Ultra Fly, Nike Zoom Structure, and Saucony Guide right now. Those are 5, 10, and 8 mm drops. I tend to wear high drop shoes and I'm trying to confuse my feet.Trail: Again with the rotation. La Sportiva Bushido, Pearl Izumi M2V2, and Altra Lone Peak.
Trail? Road? Track? Or Treadmill?
I like the kind of trails that want to wreck you. Roots and rocks galore. Steep drop offs, gnarly climbs. The kind of trail that says "fuck your pace!" I love it.
What is your ideal running weather?
Crisp and not humid. Warm enough that I can wear my crop tops, but cool enough that I'm not on the verge of death. I get about two weeks of that each year.
Do you have any social media accounts you’d like to share? [Facebook, Strava, Twitter]
Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/12438730
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fcukitstargirl/

Just For Fun:

What hobbies and interests do you have besides running?
Craft beer and casual biking (like I don't race or anything. I like going for long meandering rides around the city, followed by some kind of cold treat.). Oh and puzzles. Puzzles of all kind. Zebra/Einstein puzzles and jigsaw puzzles are an ongoing obsession.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I can be friends with ALMOST anyone! And it you don't want to be my friend, that's okay! I hope you have a nice day!
I guess that's not very hidden. If you've met me, it's rather blatant. Unfortunately I think I come off as an eager puppy sometimes, but I assure you I'm no like that 24/7. It's just that races and running hype me up!
Biggest pet peeve?
Racism. Ugh, "color-blindness" lol "I don't see color" really okay thank you for erasing my problems as an Asian women. Much appreciated.
Dream job! What would it be?
I would absolutely love to work for an outdoors company!!! They need surveys, right????
Favorite Quote or Poem?
Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle. (unknown, attributed to Plato)
“I am the one thing in life I can control. I am inimitable; I am an original." Hamilton.
What is your biggest character flaw?
I often have no filter. It can get me into trouble.
What songs have you been listening to recently?
The Violent Femmes Viva Wisconsin and the Scott Pilgrim Soundtrack
What are some of your favorite non-running subreddits?
I have a multi-reddit built of all the relationship/dating/ask relationship/etc type subreddits. SO MUCH DRAMA!!!

One Last Question:

What is the origin of your username?
Two backstory items: 1) My college had a "no alcohol in the pretense of under 21" rule. 2) my friend had just let me the book "Stargirl" to read.
After some kind of campus mixer, this freshman decided we were all his friends and when we went back to our dorm, he followed us. I wanted to drink so I was irritated. He asked what everyone's name was and my friends all said, but when it got to me, I said "Stargirl" and my friend who had lent me the book burst out laughing. As a joke, I changed my FB name to Stargirl. I went to a small school so word spread, some professors started calling me Stargirl. It stuck
.When I registered for reddit, I was wearing this shirt: https://i.imgur.com/4vjYYvZ.jpg
So, I just combined the two.
(Pixel isn't a real name either, so I guess I am like Stargirl? ¯\(ツ)

2018.07.07 02:03 assessment_bot [ Non-Fatal ] [ 06/19/2018 ] MOONEY M20J, Monroe/ NC

On June 19, 2018, at 1350 eastern daylight time, a Mooney M201FD, N201FD, was substantially damaged during a forced landing following a missed approach to runway 5 at Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport (EQY), Monroe, North Carolina. The private pilot was not injured and the pilot-rated passenger sustained minor injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the personal flight which departed Jim Hamilton L. B. Owens Airport (CUB), Columbia, South Carolina about 1245, and was conducted under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91.
In a written statement, the pilot said the purpose of the flight was to practice instrument approaches at three different airports, and then return to CUB; his home airport. The pilot-rated passenger, who was not instrument rated, accompanied him as a "safety pilot."
According to the pilot, he had completed the ILS RWY 5 instrument approach procedure at EQY to near decision altitude and initiated the missed approach with a climbing right turn, when about 600 feet above ground level (agl), "the engine suddenly started to falter."
The pilot visually checked the mixture, throttle, propeller, and fuel pump settings and turned left for a forced landing on runway 23. The pilot maneuvered the airplane over trees and buildings on the airport perimeter towards the runway "just above" stall speed. As the airplane neared the landing surface heading about 270 degrees and about 8 feet agl, the airplane stalled, landed hard on the paved surface, and continued into the grass between the runway and parallel taxiway.
The pilot held a private pilot certificate with ratings for airplane single engine land and instrument airplane. His most recent Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 3rd class medical was issued March 20, 2017. The pilot reported 772 total hours of flight experience, of which 137 were in the accident airplane make and model.
According to FAA records, the airplane was manufactured in 1977. Its most recent annual inspection was completed April 4, 2018 at 5,391 total aircraft hours.
At 1353, the weather recorded at EQY included scattered clouds at 7,000 feet and variable winds at 4 knots. The temperature was 36C, and the dew point was 19C. The altimeter setting was 29.96 inches of mercury.
Examination of photographs revealed substantial damage to the wings and fuselage.
Under the supervision of an FAA aviation safety inspector, electrical power was applied and an engine start was attempted at EQY. The engine rotated when the starter was actuated, but the start attempt was unsuccessful. While troubleshooting, compression was confirmed on each cylinder using the thumb method, fuel delivery was confirmed, and spark was confirmed at the top spark plugs for cylinders 1 and 3, and the bottom spark plugs for cylinders 2 and 4. Subsequent start attempts were also unsuccessful. The engine exam was suspended and the airplane was scheduled for recovery from the site and further examination.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Colin Jones
With Shaq slated to start for TD against the Buccs, the nickel is open again. Against Green Bay Colin played "frog" (the team's name for his role as a nickle/safety) admirably and had one of his best games in a Panthers uniform. Captain Munnerlyn is expected to play this week as well, but it will be interesting to see how RR and Wilks split time between a hot hand and a veteran. The defense will need speed and strength in the nickel to match up against Humphries and Howard.
Edge Defenders
Peppers and Addison are on fire this season. They're the 5th pair of Panthers to each rack up double-digit sacks in a season. The defense will need that production to continue on Christmas Eve. Winston looked sharper than ever against Atlanta, despite missing a lot of talent around him (27/35, 299yd, 3TD, 0INT). Pep, Mario and the gang will need to not only keep up the pressure on Winston, but maintain edge discipline and not allow him to escape the pocket and scramble. If Wilks continues to aggressively call blitzes and get in Winston's head the injury-ridden Buccs will have a rough Christmas.
Thieves Avenue
Major James and Batman (not to be confused with the Dark Knight in Washington) doubled down Sunday with their second straight game each nabbing an interception. The pair, it seems, took notice of articles a few weeks ago questioning why Thieves Ave was closed for repairs. Two games later, the Panthers secondary has 5 more INTs and 2 more fumble recoveries. The caution tape and traffic cones are gone and the road is open for traffic, or so it seems. As noted above, Winston looks sharp now so Worley, Bradberry and whatever combination of safeties and nickels take the field Saturday will need to be mindful of potholes and speed bumps.
Greg Olsen
Not many outside of the Panther-faithful had much trust in Greg Olsen bouncing back Sunday. After all, since his foot injury he has struggled to stay on the field or make much of an impact. Greg flipped then script against Green Bay however, leading the team with 9 catches on 12 targets for 116yds and a TD. That stellar performance came against a team in the top 10 in the NFL in defending tight ends. He now faces the leagues 2nd best TE defense in Tampa. The Buccs have surrendered just 3TDs and 546yds to opposing TE this season (only 15yds more than #1 Jax). Will Greg pick up where he left off against Green Bay or struggle against the Buccs? (FWIW he only needs 846yds to hit 4 straight 1000yd seasons).
Cam's Cadence
Many pointed out over the course of this season that Cam Newton's usually strong pre-snap-game was lacking this year. Much of this is likely due to lack of chemistry between Cam and Larsen while Kalil is out as well as lack of help diagnosing defenses from Olsen. With both players back in a rhythm Sunday, Cam was able to draw the Packers into several neutral-zone infractions. That was against a team ranking 6th least in penalties per game. Tampa bay comes in at 13th with 6.4/game, but over their last 3 games that's increased to 7.3. If Cam's can keep his cadence on point and buy some extra yards to keep head of the chains it will make moving the ball much easier.
Christian McCaffery
Every time I put CMC in the WTWF I get mad at myself. Is it really analysis or helpful to tell my fellow fans to watch our first round pick? However, after what could be his "breakout" game last Sunday I cannot help it. CMC was fed early and often against Green Bay and with the exception of bobbling one of the most difficult things to do on special teams in football he was phenomenal. He finished the day with with 18 touches for a career-high 136yds (63rus, 73rec) for a balanced attack and one touchdown. It's unclear if the change was aimed at resting an older Stewart near the end of the season or if Shula is finally starting to open his playbook more as the season wraps up. What is clear is that if the Panthers continue to feed their OROY candidate, there is a good chance he will produce.

MATCHUP HISTORY

All Time Record: 21-13 (Panthers lead)
Largest Victory: 48-16 (12/24/2011)

  • Since Cam came to Carolina, the Panthers are 9-4 against the Buccaneers.
  • The Panthers and Buccaneers have not split the series since 2008.
  • Before the division realignment that ensured the Panthers and Bucs would play each other twice a year, every year, the Panthers and Bucs played each other only 3 times in 7 years.
  • Since realignment, every year the Panthers have gone to the playoffs, the first game of the series was played in Raymond Jones. This year, our first game of the season was played in Raymond Jones, and Panthers would clinch another playoff appearance this year with one more win.

BY THE NUMBERS

23-1
The Panthers forced four turnovers against the Packers on Sunday, including the fourth 3-INT game of Aaron Rodgers's career and his first since 2009. Perhaps more importantly, they didn't turn the ball over themselves. In the Panthers' history, the team has 23 wins and only 1 loss when winning the turnover margin by four or more. The lone loss came in 1998 against the 49ers, in a game that featured two Terrell Owens touchdowns.
60
On the Panthers' first offensive drive of the game, Christian McCaffrey was responsible for 60 of the team's 85 yards. He touched the ball nine times, recording 20 yards on the ground on five carries and 40 yards on four catches, including his touchdown. He also converted a pair of third downs. Interestingly, he only touched the ball nine times for the rest of the entire game, but he was methodical in carving up the Packers' defense on the opening drive.
3
Damiere Byrd has been working for two and a half years to make an impact in Charlotte. From the practice squad for 2015 and the vast majority of 2016 to his first catch in the last game of that year, from his injury this year and now, his first two career touchdowns. I was curious to see if any Panther had ever caught his first two touchdowns as a Panther in the same game. Byrd is actually the third player to do so! Patrick Jeffers did it in 1999 (although he had a pair of touchdowns during his time as a Cowboy) and the immortal David Gettis did it in 2010. No ifs, ands, or butts about it.
1998
The Panthers recorded two identical box scores in consecutive weeks against two NFC North Opponents. A 31-24 win against the Vikings followed by a 31-24 win against the Packers. The last time (and only other time) the Panthers recorded two weeks of identical box scores was in 1998. The Panthers opened the 1998 season with a 19-14 loss against the eventual NFC Champion Falcons and followed that up with a 19-14 loss against the Saints. The Panthers started 0-7 that year and finished with a 4-12 record, in what was Dom Capers's last season with the team.
49.2
Jameis Winston is going hungry. He hasn't eaten a W in a very long time. He's lost eight straight games as the Bucs' starter (the Bucs picked up a pair of wins while he was hurt), including their 17-3 loss against the Panthers in Week 8, Kelvin Benjamin's last game with the team. In that game, he threw two interceptions and turned in a passer rating of 49.2. The Bucs, level with four teams at 4-10 and jockeying for drafting position and not playoff position, have only pride to play for against a team that will clinch a playoff spot with a win. Jameis might not eat that W until fall of 2018.

PANTHERS POWER RANKINGS

Outlet Rank Last Week Weekly Change Notes
8 8 - Usually the term “distraction” is overused, because NFL players aren’t as easily distracted as some like to believe. I don’t think the issues with owner Jerry Richardson will affect the team on the field this season. Most owners don’t have regular interactions with the players. The inappropriate workplace behavior Richardson is accused of didn’t have anything to do with the players or coaches, it seems. It’s an unusual situation, but it’s a bit much to assume a 10-4 team will suddenly become rattled by it.
8 7 ↓ 1 When the Panthers brought back Peppers, they were likely expecting some solid part-time work. Instead, Peppers could be heading to his 10th Pro Bowl, as he has become the fifth player in history with 10.0 sacks at age 37 or older.
8 8 - Recap: It has been an up-and-down year for quarterback Cam Newton and the Panthers’ offense. But Ron Rivera’s club played a very complete game as the club got its 10th victory of the season. Mike Shula’s offense rolled up 387 total yards, including 151 on the ground. Newton completed 20 of his 31 throws for 242 yards and four touchdowns. He took only one sack but also ran the ball 14 times for 58 yards. Carolina’s defense picked off Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers three times and came up with four takeaways on the afternoon. And ageless Julius Peppers had a hand in the team’s three sacks. Next Week: The Panthers host the Buccaneers in position to sweep the series between the clubs for the fourth time in five years. Back in Week 8 at Tampa, Carolina’s defense stifled Jameis Winston and company, 17-3. The Panthers own a 7-2 record in the teams’ last nine meetings. Playoff Hopes: Despite the fact that the Panthers were swept by the Saints this season, Rivera’s team could still steal the NFC South title if the Falcons help out a little next Sunday. Of course, Matt Ryan and company hosts Carolina on the final day of the season. This has been quite the divisional race.
2 3 ↑ 1 Owner Jerry Richardson’s announcement that he will sell the franchise after the season amid the NFL’s investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct against him, along with his exit from the team’s day-to-day operations, coincide with the Panthers potentially headed to their second Super Bowl in three years. They certainly can compete with the NFC’s best teams, and TE Greg Olsen’s return to form in Sunday’s victory over the Packers could give QB Cam Newton the help he needs on offense.
6 6 - They could be Super caliber. Sadly, Jerry Richardson's fall adds to franchise's inordinate number of off-field scandals in less than quarter century.
6 7 ↑ 1 Cam Newton was phenomenal against Green Bay. He got the offense going with some designed runs, and he's the only quarterback in the NFL you could design some of these runs for. The creativity of the run game has sparked the Carolina offense, and Newton made some big-time throws Sunday. It helped that tight end Greg Olsen looked close to 100 percent for the first time in a while because Olsen is Newton's favorite target. The Panthers are one of the best teams in the NFC. My concern is that while the defense is impressive, it isn't one that can shut down elite offenses. Carolina has defensive playmakers in Luke Kuechly and Julius Peppers, but it doesn't have one consistent pass-rusher or a shutdown corner. That could be a problem against teams such as the Saints and Falcons in the postseason.
8 8 - Huge win for the Panthers on Sunday, on the strength of an opportunistic defense that made Aaron Rodgers look like a quarterback who's been out of the lineup for two months. Well, maybe Rodgers had been absent for weeks, yet he was still uncharacteristically off on a few throws, partially because of rust and partially because of solid play on the back five by Carolina. Then there was the spot pressure when it was needed most, highlighted by Julius Peppers capturing Rodgers late in the fourth quarter, when Green Bay was threatening in Panthers territory. Peppers, whose age (37) is only surpassed by his career sack total (153.5), has produced 10 sacks in this, his 16th NFL season. Rodgers even mentioned after the game that the man who planted him will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. #Respect
5 5 - They are getting it going at the right time. Cam Newton looked like the Newton of 2015 against the Packers.

2017.12.22 17:06 GreatZapper [1998 season rewatch - Week 13] Visionaire 500k @ Charlotte (IRL); U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota @ Michigan (CART)

Charlotte, NC (July 23, 1998) - Twenty four teams took up residence in the garage as the second annual VisionAire 500 got under way at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Despite being on track just four days ago at Dover Downs, a full field of 24 cars were presented for practice. "The fact they have 24 cars here after Dover shows how committed they (the teams) are," said CMS President and General Manager H.A. Wheeler.
Kenny Brack set the pace during the first practice session, with a lap of 24.880 seconds and a speed of 217.042 mph. "It's going very well," Brack said. "A.J. knows how to set these cars up, so we were good from the beginning. We'll be quicker when it cools off." In the second session, Brack improved his time by eight hundreths of a second but was bested by Tony Stewart who bettered his morning time by three tenths of a second. Stewart's fast practice time of the day was 24.606 seconds, 217.042.
Stewart, who returned to the Dallara chassis this weekend, remained on top through qualifying, with a record setting pole speed of 220.498 mph, the first time anybody has run over 220 mph at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The first six cars on the grid broke the existing track record. Stewart expects race speeds to be even higher, as cars work in each others draft. "When you're running flat out around a race track, any time you can get behind somebody it helps you out."
Greg Ray joins Stewart on the front row, with a speed of 219.995 mph. This is Ray's second front row start this season. Ray's Foyt teammate Kenny Brack was third quickest qualifier, with a speed of 219.521 mph. The top three cars on the grid all qualified within a tenth of a second.
After a two race hiatus, Pagan racing returns to IRL competition with Stevie Reeves as their new driver. The two-time national midget champion is returning to open wheelers after five years of NASCAR Busch Grand National. He expects the transition to Indy cars to be much smoother than his transition to the stock cars. Although Reeves makes his IRL Pep Boys debut at this event, he has more experience at CMS than any other driver in the field. He made eight starts at CMS while competing in the Busch series.
Steve Knapp was in the garage area today, still sitting out the IRL's mandatory seven day wait after suffering a mild concussion in last weekend's race at Dover Downs. This was the first time that Knapp, 1998 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, had been hurt in a race car. He said that at Dover "I got back to the track right away to try to con Dr. Bock into giving me some leeway, but he explained to me why it's not safe for you to do it." Knapp will be back at Pike's Peak.
Returning to IRL competition is Jimmy Kite, in Sinden Racing Service's Dallara-Infiniti. Jimmy, who led last year's race until a cut tire put him out, thoroughly enjoys Charlotte and said that he would be here even if he weren't driving. He will be in two races: Friday night's USAC midget event, as well as the VisionAire 500. He admits that landing the IRL ride has changed his driving plans for the midget race: "I'm still going to run hard, but I can't go and do anything stupid and get myself hurt."
Kite failed to turn any competitive laps today, as his crew spent most of the day preparing the car. He will take a provisional starting position.
Donnie Beechler will also take a provisional, after blowing an engine in this afternoon's practice session.
Sam Schmidt lost his engine on his first practice lap today, but his team was able to replace it in time to present the car for qualifying. Without a systems check, Sam ran a lap of 191.829 mph to place 22nd on the grid. Sam is racing for a very special cause this weekend. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, seven year old Matthew Tyler, who has a rare form of cancer, will be the recipient of pledges donated for every lap that Sam completes during the 208 lap VisionAire 500. To join Sam in his efforts, you can make a pledge by calling 704-847-8840 or a donation by calling 704-339-0334.

Brooklyn, MI (July 22, 1998) -- Alex Zanardi will chase the CART record for most consecutive victories while the Target/Chip Ganassi Racing two-car team seeks to maintain its exclusive rights to the Vanderbilt Cup as the FedEx Championship Series travels to Michigan Speedway for Sunday's U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota (1 p.m. ET, live, ABC-TV).
Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) equaled the CART record of four consecutive victories, set by Al Unser Jr. in 1990, at last week's Molson Indy in Toronto and eyes his fifth at a venue in which he reigns as the defending champion. He rolled to a 31.737-second victory in last season's U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota for his first career oval win in the FedEx Championship Series. He also has led at least 74 laps in each of his three career appearances at Michigan and has led a combined 312 of the 750 laps run in those events.
Coupled with a victory by Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) at the inaugural U.S. 500 in 1996, Zanardi's win last season gave Target/Chip Ganassi a stranglehold on the Vanderbilt Cup, the prize chalice of the U.S. 500 winner.
Zanardi's charge at Unser Jr.'s record began innocently with a June 7 triumph at Detroit. He followed with a victory at Portland on June 21 and then registered the second three-race winning streak of his three-year career with a win July 12 at Cleveland.
The streak appeared to be in jeopardy last week in Toronto when Dario Franchitti (KOOL Reynard Honda) won the pole and possessed an extremely dominant car on race day. Franchitti led 76 of the 95 laps before a brake problem led to a spin, ended his day and handed the lead to CART's all-time victory leader, Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford). Zanardi, however, took advantage of Andretti's loose car to make a daring inside move with three laps remaining for the lead and the eventual victory that tied him with Unser Jr.
The four consecutive victories have vaulted Zanardi, the defending series champion, to a commanding lead in the FedEx Championship Series title race. He leads Vasser, who is second in the championship, by a 69-point margin (175-106) and third-place Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes, 98 points) by 77.
But Zanardi's run at sole possession of the CART record could face its stiffest competition from the other half of the Target/Chip Ganassi Racing equation - Vasser.
Vasser, who will be making his 100th career start, is the only other Champ Car driver beside Zanardi who is a multiple winner this season. Also consider that both of Vasser's victories have come on ovals (Nazareth, Milwaukee), he has he finished among the top eight in 10 consecutive races and has enjoyed a bevy of success in recent years at Michigan Speedway.
He won the inaugural U.S. 500 in 1996 and has finished ninth or better in three of his last four Michigan appearances. He also won two of his six career poles at Michigan - sweeping the position at the two events in 1996 - and has qualified fifth or better in his last four starts at the superspeedway. The second pole in 1996, which came in July, remains the track qualifying record at 234.665 miles per hour.
The Target/Chip Ganassi Racing tandem of Zanardi and Vasser is riding a six-race win streak - dating to Zanardi's win at St. Louis - and is looking to tie the CART team mark of seven established by Marlboro Team Penske in 1994. The Target/Chip Ganassi Racing duo has won 21 of the last 44 CART races dating to the start of the 1996 season and no other team has captured more than seven during that span.
Zanardi and Vasser, however, must contend with five other Champ Car drivers who have tamed the 2-mile superspeedway in the Irish Hills. Bobby Rahal (Miller Lite Reynard Ford) was the first among the active winners to capture a victory at Michigan Speedway, winning a 150-mile event in 1982. He later added a 200-mile win in 1985 and 250-mile triumph in '86. He also is a three-time polesitter, garnering that position in 1983 and twice in '85. He has led 441 laps in his Michigan career, including 25 last year.
Andretti is the only other active Champ Car driver who has multiple victories at Michigan. He won from the pole in 1987 and added another triumph in '89 for the only 500-mile wins of his illustrious career. He also has been the one driver who has had Zanardi in his sights the last two races, finishing runner-up to him at Cleveland and Toronto, respectively.
Unser Jr. (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) landed one of his three career 500-mile wins at Michigan, with that victory coming in 1990. Scott Pruett (Visteon Reynard Ford) recorded his first CART victory at Michigan in 1995, outdueling Unser Jr. by 0.056 seconds in what was then the second-closest finish in Champ Car history. His most recent success came in his last appearance at Michigan when he captured the pole for last season's race.
Andre Ribeiro (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) earned his third career victory at Michigan in 1996 and will look to extend an impressive streak in 500-mile events. He has led at least 21 laps in five of his six career starts in 500-mile events since he joined the FedEx Championship Series in 1995. In his four Michigan starts, he has led 236 laps with a best of 114 in a winning-effort at the 1996 Marlboro 500. He also finished fourth in the inaugural U.S. 500.
PacWest Racing has attacked Michigan Speedway in double-barrel fashion. Mauricio Gugelmin (Hollywood PacWest Mercedes) has finished among the top six in his last three appearances and has led at least one lap in his past four. His best performance was a runner-up finish at the 1996 U.S. 500. Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) has finished sixth or better in three career starts, the highlight being a runner-up effort last year.
Bryan Herta (Shell Reynard Ford) and Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda) have not been victorious at Michigan Speedway, but both have enjoyed success there in recent years. Herta has qualified 11th or better in four career starts, including a best of third at the 1996 U.S. 500. He finished fifth last season and equaled his career-best finish of second at the 1996 Marlboro 500. De Ferran has scored points in three of four career appearances and established personal bests last season when he started 10th and finished third.
Dennis Vitolo (SmithKline Beecham Reynard Ford), Max Papis (MCI Reynard Toyota) and Arnd Meier (HasserodeJ.A.G. Lola Ford) produced career-best finishes a year ago at the U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota. Vitolo finished seventh and it remains his career-best effort. Papis finished eighth and he matched that performance last week in Toronto. Meier finished 12th for his first career PPG Cup points and the performance remains a career best, matched this season at Portland .
Moore, Adrian Fernandez (Tecate/Quaker State/Labatt Reynard Ford) and Paul Tracy (KOOL Reynard Honda) are candidates for their first career 500-mile victories considering their oval success this season.
Moore has five top-four performances in six oval starts this season. He was victorious at Rio, finished second at Homestead, third at Nazareth and Gateway, and fourth at Japan. His only finish outside the top four was 13th at Milwaukee. Two of Fernandez's top-three, season-best performances have come on ovals, including his second career win. He was victorious at Motegi and added a third-place finish at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His top finish at Michigan is third in 1995.
Tracy's season-best performances have come on ovals as well, accounting for three of his four top-seven finishes. He captured fifth at Japan and Nazareth and was seventh at Milwaukee. He also has had success at Michigan, including a personal-best of second in 1992, and the U.S. 500. He was seventh in the inaugural event and fourth last season.
Franchitti continues to move closer to earning his first CART career victory as he heads to the U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota. After posting three top-four finishes in his last four starts, he had perhaps his best opportunity at the elusive first victory in Toronto. Also on a roll of late is Richie Hearn (BudweiseRalphs Swift Ford), who has registered three top 10 finishes in his last five starts. The run is highlighted by a career-best sixth place finish at Milwaukee and a seventh at Toronto.
Christian Fittipaldi (Kmart Swift Ford) and Robby Gordon (Panasonic/Duskin/MCI Reynard Toyota) have had a smattering of success at Michigan, but look to build off their most recent superspeedway performances as well. Fittipaldi was ninth at Fontana last season while Gordon was eighth. Fittipaldi has a personal-best finish of ninth at Michigan (1995) in four career starts while Gordon's is eighth ('96) in four starts.
PJ Jones (Castrol-Degree Reynard Toyota) and Michel Jourdain Jr. (Herdez/Viva Mexico! Reynard Ford) will look forward to a return to a superspeedway after showing promise in their most recent efforts. Jones finished 10th at the 1997 season finale at Fontana, which was just one position shy of matching his career-best finish of ninth (1996 Detroit). Jourdain Jr. performed well in his only two career appearances on a superspeedway, finishing 13th at last season's U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota and qualifying a career-best fifth at Fontana.
Four rookies will make their superspeedway debuts at the U.S. 500 Presented By Toyota. Tony Kanaan (LCI Reynard Honda) enters the U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota with the points lead in the Jim Trueman Rookie of the Year race. Kanaan, on the strength of five top-nine finishes, holds a 39-32 advantage over Helio Castro-Neves (Alumax Aluminum Reynard Mercedes). Rounding out the rookie crop is J J Lehto (Hogan Motor Leasing, Inc. Reynard Mercedes) and Alex Barron (Castrol-Degree Reynard Toyota).
Patrick Carpentier's (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) only career superspeedway appearance came last season at Michigan. The second-year driver started 12th and finished 15th and later missed the season finale at Fontana due to injury.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Christian McCaffery
CMC has been productive in the passing game all season long, but has struggled against stacked boxes in the run game. In the first game of the post KB era he faced much more favorable conditions against Atlanta, racking up 66yd and his first rushing TD. However he faces a tough team in Miami (7th in Rush Def) Sunday. If the passing game and read option can cause the defense to hesitate look to CMC to make some extra effort big plays.
Mike Palardy
Special teams players don't often get the credit they deserve, but this sub has done a good job showering M(v)P with the love. Solidly in the top 10 in net and gross punting yards in the league he's become a real weapon for the Panthers to flip the field. Jakeem Grant hasn't been as explosive in the return game this year, but still has the speed and shiftiness to break a big one. Look to Palardy to keep that from happening this week.
Captain Munnerlyn
Miami's most dangerous offensive weapon remaining is Jarvis Landry. The Phins love to throw to Landry- he just passed Anquan Boldin for the most receptions through the first four seasons of a career. For most of Sunday, a man equal in stature will be covering Landry. Captain will need to be on point to not let the shifty slot WR get away from him on short yardage plays.

MATCHUP HISTORY

All Time Record: 4-1 (Dolphins lead)
Largest Victory: 20-16 (11/24/2013)
Current Streak: 1W
  • Since Cam came to Carolina, the Panthers are 1-0 against the Dolphins.
  • The Panthers, up till 2013, had generally been put down by the Dolphins. Even with their one win, the Panthers have their 3rd worst head-to-head record against the Dolphins, only behind the Broncos and Steelers.
  • Some interesting facts
    • The Panthers never beat the Dolphins until John Kasay was replaced by former Dolphins kicker, Olindo Mare, then subsequently Graham Gano.
    • In all 4 losses, neither team scored in the 3rd quarter. In the 1 win, only the Panthers scored in the 3rd quarter.
    • Panthers had twice as many sacks in their 1 win than in their 4 losses.
    • Ted Ginn Jr. has beat the Panthers as a Dolphin, and the Dolphins as a Panther.
    • Funny enough, the Dolphin's QB that had their highest rated performance against the Panthers, Ryan Tannehill in their only loss.

BY THE NUMBERS

5.2%
We'll be talking about Julio Jones's drop for years. But it was emblematic of Carolina's biggest defensive struggle this season. On what was probably the biggest defensive play of Carolina's season to that point, there wasn't a defender in sight. And it wasn't a fluke, it was a trend. Carolina has intercepted or defensed only 5.2 percent of passes thrown against them, which is the lowest mark in the NFL per Pro Football Focus. Thieves Ave. is full of potholes these days.
48%
That doesn't necessarily mean that the defense is incapable of making plays when it matters. On both 3rd & 1 and 4th & 1 plays this season, Carolina has only allowed 12 conversions out of 25 attempts. That's a 48% success rate for Carolina's opponents, which ranks 4th in the league. And that's a large part of why Carolina has already matched its wins total from last season.
46.9
I (dialaview) have to eat some crow here. I was way down on Michael Palardy during the offseason and training camp, and I was utterly, utterly convinced that MVLee would beat him at the punter position battle. I was dumbstruck when the Panthers cut Lee and went with Palardy. And he's been amazing all year. His 46.9 net punting average across the past three weeks ranks first in the league, as well as his number of punts downed inside the 20 (8). The field position game is important, and Palardy is helping us win it.
.600
The Panthers, as a relatively young franchise, have played a mere 15 games on Monday Night Football. Meanwhile, their opponents, the Dolphins, have played on Monday night a whopping 82 times, more than any other team. That said, the Panthers have done well in their limited MNF action, with 9 wins to 6 losses forming a record of .600 on Monday night, which is fourth in NFL history (Seattle is first with a 24-8 record for .750). The Dolphins are an even .500.
1.02
This number should excite everyone. Thanks to some next-gen stats, we know just how good of a game CMC had on Sunday. He averaged not just 1.02 yards before contact, but 1.02 yards before defenders were within a yard of him. That's oddly specific, sure, but when you consider that his average for the first eight weeks was negative, and that the NFL average is a fifth of a yard, you have to start getting excited for his no-doubt growing role in the offense.

PANTHERS POWER RANKINGS

Outlet Rank Last Week Weekly Change Notes
10 10 - It’s rare to see an NFL game anymore in which a team only has three players catch a pass. Yet, that’s what happened with the Panthers, as Devin Funchess, Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel accounted for all 13 receptions from Cam Newton. The first game without Kelvin Benjamin produced only 137 passing yards and I’m still not entirely sure that trade made sense, but they got a big win over the Falcons without him.
11 12 ↑ 1 It might not be the prettiest of climbs, but the Panthers have risen in the rankings despite the drama surrounding Cam Newton. His passing hasn't been on point, with 10 touchdowns to 11 interceptions so far this season, but he has picked up the running, accumulating 251 rush yards the past four games, 11th in the NFL in that span.
8 8 - Recap: After looking pretty inept for the vast majority of the first two quarters against the visiting Atlanta Falcons (including 2 lost fumbles by running back Jonathan Stewart), there was a dramatic reversal of fortunes in regards to Ron Rivera’s club. Two touchdowns in the final 1:55 of the first half gave the Panthers a 14-10 advantage. Carolina would eventually stretch that to a 10-point lead and then had to hold off a late Atlanta rally. Cam Newton didn’t throw a touchdown pass or turn over the ball. But he had 86 of the team’s impressive 201 yards on the ground, including a sensational nine-yard TD leap. Next Week: The Panthers get an extra day to prepare for the inconsistent Miami Dolphins. Adam Gase’s team has managed to remain in the playoff race despite the fact that the team has been dreadful on offense and been shut out twice this season. The Dolphins’ revived defensive front could give Newton and company all they can handle. Playoff Hopes: Back-to-back divisional wins have the Panthers right in the thick of this NFC South race. The club has already equaled last season’s victory total and could be on the verge of getting on a roll. Carolina’s defense has begun to reassert itself and the team in general has remained within shouting distance of the first-place Saints.
9 12 ↑ 3 Not much has come easily this season for the Panthers, and last week’s curious trade-deadline deal of WR Kelvin Benjamin was the latest issue to make things seem less than ideal. But the Panthers continue to play well through it all, and the win over the Falcons means that they are the primary challenger to the Saints in the NFC South.
6 12 ↑ 6 If Carolina thought Cam Newton might spread ball more without WR Kelvin Benjamin, well, he completed passes to just three receivers Sunday.
8 9 ↑ 1 The Carolina Panthers are figuring out who they are this season, and positive results are following. This is a team that can win with sound defense, power rushing and a few big plays from Cam Newton each game. Newton isn't going to slice up defenses with any kind of consistency, but he doesn't have to. As long as he takes care of the ball, keeps defenses off-balance with his running ability and hits a few deep shots each week, the Panthers are going to win more often than not. I'd still like to see Carolina get more from its running backs, but sticking with the run is what's important. It helps eliminate turnovers and allows the Panthers to play through their defense, which is special in the front seven. Unlike the Denver Broncos, the Panthers know how to get out of their own way. They're going to stay in the playoff race all season and are going to be dangerous if they get in.
11 13 ↑ 2 Very quietly, Carolina has put together two straight wins on the strength of its defense and jussst enough offense to get by, with 20 points against the Falcons on Sunday, 17 the week before. Cam Newton reprised the role of his 2012 self (or resurrected Bobby Douglass from 1972), piling up 86 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. He threw for only 137 yards, which wasn't even good enough for 1972. That's OK, because the defense stone-walled the Falcons' run game -- and Matty looks like he's running on Ice when he takes off. Next up: Dolphins.
9 13 ↑ 4 They are tied for the division lead after beating the Falcons with the re-emergence of Cam Newton as a playmaker. They next face Miami Monday at home.

2017.08.24 22:52 Reignofratch First Gaming/Engineering rig with plans for two major upgrades

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
For School, which will later transition into work, I need to be able to operate Cree/Pro-E, Solidworks, MATLab, and do some medium to large sized compiling and FEA analysis task, as well as the usual Microsoft office and web browsing.
For Gaming I am not concerned with playing at max settings on most games. As long as it will run Battlefield 1 fairly smoothly, I will be happy.
A Secondary task I intend to use this PC for is some light music recording. I plan to find a free software just to record quick bass tracks to send to my band. We have a dedicated Mac rig at our studio that will do all the heavy labor.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

  • HISTORY VS ATLANTA
The Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons have faced off a total of 42 times, all of which were in the regular season. The Falcons lead the series 25-17-0. The last five games are as follows:
Date Away Home Score Stadium Winner
12/27/15 Panthers Falcons 20-13 Georgia Dome Falcons
12/13/15 Falcons Panthers 38-0 BoA Panthers
12/28/14 Panthers Falcons 34-3 Georgia Dome Panthers
11/16/14 Falcons Panthers 19-17 BoA Falcons
12/29/13 Panthers Falcons 21-20 Georgia Dome Panthers
In recent history, the Panthers have been dominating the Falcons pretty routinely. The exception comes with the last game against them. They came out blazing on all cylinders and surprised the Super Bowl bound Panthers, defeating them for their first loss of the season.

  • Players to Watch: Panthers
Here are some players on the Panthers' side of the ball that you should watch carefully.
  • Cameron Artis Payne
If you need more information on how CAP played against the Vikings last week simply visit this post. This week CAP will be facing a defense that has given up 40 more rushing yards per game than the Vikings. How the offense uses CAP will determine how the game plays out. If the offense abandons the run and Newton throws more than 35 times then the Panthers will likely lose. If they use CAP to pound the defense then the Panthers are likely to win.
  • James Bradberry
Bradberry faces his first true challenge, he gets to go up against top 5 receiver Julio Jones. This is the game that Bradberry can make a name for himself in, as long as he's able to lock down Jones enough, or at the very least keep the damage to a minimum. In all likelihood Bradberry will be beaten on underneath routes because the Panthers will put him in off coverage instead of press. Furthermore it will be interesting to see if he follows Jones or if he plays a mixture of LCB and RCB based on defensive formation.
  • Kelvin Benjamin
Kelvin had probably one of his worst game of his career last week. Aside from receiving only a single target, he managed to hurt 2 drives, including a called back touchdown, with some dumb penalties. He will have to clean up his game if he wants to solidify himself as a league top receiver. This includes his route running. He'll most likely face off against the NFC South's best corner, Desmond Trufant. This could be an exciting match up, or one that's not relevant to the game at all, it's on KB.
Furthermore the Panthers will likely force the ball to Benjamin to make up for the fact that they missed an open Benjamin a few times last week. How Newton spreads the ball and how big of a role Benjamin has in the passing game will be very important.
  • Tre Boston
Tre did mildly better against the Vikings, but still needs much improvement. While Bradberry did well enough in keeping Diggs in check, Tre did keep Diggs from making a couple plays past Bradberry. We've been fortunate up to this point going up against average or worse offenses, but we need Tre to step it up as we step into a 3 week divisional period.
Boston will be tasked with keeping a close eye on Jacob Tamme who has been a good target for Ryan to go to when Jones and the running backs are fully covered. How he makes his reads will determine how the defense holds up against the potent offense of Atlanta.
  • What to Watch:
Here are some matchups to key in on during Sunday's game.
  • #1 WRs Vs. #1 CBs
The storylines around both sets of players make both of these matchups worth watching. Kelvin Benjamin and Julio Jones are both coming off of their worst outings as wide receivers in the NFL after Benjamin put up 0 catches on 1 target against the Vikings and Jones caught just 1 pass for 16 yards on 7 targets against the Saints. In his two games against the Falcons, Benjamin has looked like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: he went off in their first matchup to the tune of 9 receptions for 109 yards and 1 TD while in the second matchup he was limited to just 1 catch for 9 yards. Benjamin and Jones will both be looking to return to form against their division rival. Meanwhile, the two players tasked with containing these receivers are in very different stages of their career. Atlanta’s Desmond Trufant is considered a top 10 CB in the league and the best in the NFC South. He has continued his elite play through 3 games so far this season, giving up very little to opposing QBs and snagging an interception in his game against the Buccaneers. Trufant will look to continue his dominance in a very physical matchup against the Panthers’ big receivers. In contrast, rookie James Bradberry is just starting his NFL career but has already shown promise as a #1 CB. Through 3 games this season Bradberry has given up 8 receptions for 86 yards and a passer rating of just 34.1 when being targeted. Bradberry spent some time traveling with Stefon Diggs in last week’s matchup against the Vikings, including multiple snaps at RCB and even one out of the slot. It’s safe to say that Bradberry’s play has surpassed everyone’s expectations and has likely played a big part in bailing out the Panthers’ anemic pass rush. Jones won’t be the first elite receiver that Bradberry has seen this season but he will be the best and should prove to be quite the challenge for the impressive rookie.
  • Panthers’ Run Defense Vs. Atlanta’s RBs
Run defense was an issue in the Panthers’ season opener against the Broncos in which they allowed 148 yards and 2 TDs on 29 rushes for a 5.10 YPC average. However, since then the Panthers have allowed just 123 yards and 1 TD on 50 rushes for a 2.46 YPC average against the 49ers and Vikings combined. The improved performance of the defense against the run has been an integral part of the Panthers’ defense for the past several years and a big reason why that defense has ranked in the top 10 every year since 2012. They will be facing a tough matchup against the Falcons’ version of Double Trouble, Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. In their game against the Saints last week the two runners combined for 26 carries, 194 yards, 3 TDs and a 7.46 YPC average. If the Panthers defense can maintain their stingy play against the run and force the Falcons to be one-dimensional they will have a much easier time trying to contain the league’s leading offense. If Freeman and Coleman start gashing the defense for big runs look for the Falcons’ playbook to open up and the Panthers’ defense to have a very long day.
  • Mike Remmers Vs. Vic Beasley Jr
We all remember what happened in Week 16 last year. We saw our team take their first loss but more importantly we saw Mike Remmers struggle with a small speed rusher. Vic Beasley Jr racked up 2 of his 4 sacks in 2015 against the Panthers, one in each game. While Beasley only made it to Cam Newton once in Week 16, he was a constant source of pressure throughout the game and he made his one sack count, stripping Cam Newton of the ball late in the 4th quarter to end a potentially game-winning drive for the Panthers. Beasley’s performance against Remmers would be a portent of things to come as Remmers would later struggle with Von Miller, another smaller speed rusher who took advantage of Remmers in both the Super Bowl and Week 1. Remmers seems to be able to lock up his assignment for most of the game but has a tendency to make one or two big mistakes that end with Cam Newton lying on his back. If he can lock down Beasley to protect Cam’s right side it would go a long way towards giving Cam the time he needs in the pocket to be successful. If Beasley can get through Remmers consistently then Cam will have a very hard time waiting in the pocket for routes to develop knowing that Beasley will be there in just a few seconds.
Edit:
With Remmers likely moving to the left side of the line Donald Hawkins and Daryl Williams become the Panthers player to watch against Beasley.

2016.06.29 04:50 SadPanthersFan Progressive auto quote is $1,100/year less than current Geico coverage and I can't figure out why

My wife and I live in Charlotte, NC and currently have a home and auto bundle with Geico. We drive a 2013 Camry and 2016 RAV4, have no claims or traffic violations of any kind in the past 4 years and credit scores above 750. Our coverage is $100k/$300k/$100k liability, $100k/$300k UM/UIMBI, $50k UMPD, $5k per person Medpay, no UMBI and $500 comprehensive and collision deductibles on both cars with no extended transport or towing and labor coverage. We're paying roughly $1,960 per year for this.
I received a quote from Progressive for the exact same coverage on both home and auto and the auto quote was $850 per year for both of us. This seems too good to be true and I've called them and Geico several times to double check the terms and promo expiration dates etc and I can't find anything to confirm my suspicion. I even pulled the NC full non-certified driving records for us both and we both have zero points, my wife had one violation in 11/2011 and I haven't had anything since a speeding ticket in 2002. Am I missing something or just being overly cautious? Thanks for any info.

2016.06.09 19:33 i_like_outer_space [TWC] Is Time Warner Cable trying to pull one over on my retired father?

This is a question about TWC service my father is getting on Oak Island NC. My old man retired by the beach and intends to live there until he passes away. He also wants Internet service that can support him and his visiting family. TWC is the only company that can dish out more than 6Mbps there so he went with TWCs ~300Mbps plan. Understanding my ol' mans intentions makes it pretty clear that renting a modem from TWC is not a reasonable idea for someone who wants this service indefinitely. That being said... When TWC set up the network things were of course, great. WiFi from out in the front yard was pulling in almost 30Mbps. All systems go. When I went to visit him the other week he was getting around 1Mbit down and less than that up. He said he had called TWC and instead of being helped they were 'shaming' him for having his own modem. I was basically saying what the hell in my head the whole time he was explaining it to me. I couldn't believe it. We have been TWC cables since RoadRunner so I'm pretty used to dealing with TWC. I called them up myself to see what was going on. The person I spoke to was very helpful, saw the issue, spouted out the usual crap about 'signal' that TWC hasn't figured out in 20 years, and fixed the issue while I was on the phone. No real problems. Fast forward to the next week and I get a call from my dad. This is his speed test from his phone standing by the modem. I got him the same Motorola SB I use here in charlotte by the way.
Test Date: Jun 9, 2016 12:02 PM
Download: 3.06 Mbps
Upload: 1.71 Mbps
Ping: 44 ms
Connection Type: Wi-Fi
So he has terrible connectivity, cant fully load pages on the internet, his TV can find the wifi signal, all the usual stuff. On top of it all he sends me this in the email:
Time warner will not send a tech out because I own my on modem/router. Should I give up, throw my router away and rent one from them?
What is going on here? Do these people just hear an old man and think now is my chance to pitch the router for more cash? When they hear me, a younger guy with a computing background, they pony up and resolve the issue? I have never had anyone from TWC give me crap for having my own modem, much less refuse service because I do.
So before I drive 4 hours to the beach I thought I'd post here and see if anyone has encountered this kind of behavior from TWC before, or after the merge, and what that experience was like. Thanks for reading and any input I get
TL;DR when my old man tries to get TWC to help him with his awful service they refuse because he has his own modem. When I call they help resolve the issue

2016.02.13 01:00 Skytch North Carolina January Newsletter - Written by Chi Wong

This was a rather entertaining Newsletter for me to read in the NC Melee Group, does /ssbm like it as well?
Let me and Chi aka clowsui know if it's a good format for writing newsletters of our scene, since this might be a pretty cool way to show off the NC scene a bit.
Disclaimer: Ronzell is the Falco/Puff player that has many different tags throughout this newsletter, so if it seems like a pretty random or bizarre tag, it's probably him.
Anyway, here's the official post:
Hello everyone! This is Chi Wong here, junior Smash reporter and highly aspirational Melee competitor. I used to write newsletters for the Cincinnati scene under the pseudonym Moomoo Mumosa, but I decided that was pretty lame and confusing for any and all future adoring fans (of which I expect to have many, obviously). So here I am, as myself, bringing to you a succulent yet succinct summary of monthly happenings in NC Melee. Doing this monthly makes a lot of sense because it gives players a chance to interact with one another in competition, thereby providing substance and story. My hope is that I can highlight storylines in our scene and also inspire others -- content-wise or gameplay-wise -- to do better. So without further ado, here’s the January newsletter!

P.S.: It’s intentionally corny. I like to write that way when it comes to scene-based stuff, I feel it adds a little charm. If you think it obstructs your enjoyment, feel free to say so in the comments below.

January Newsletter

NC’s most dominant static team $mike (#2) and Ronzell (#3) took first place over three different events, an explicit reminder of their strength coming into 2016. So if things are same-old, same-old, why is this a news item? Well, what if I told you that $mike was using Pikachu and FalcoMaster was using Jigglypuff? This cute-but-deadly pair is what the Payday Pioneer and Shabby Sheik are confidently calling their most comfortable team. It’s not hard to see why either, what with their existing synergy as players and the Pokémons’ survivability, speed, strong set ups and superb KO moves. The only foreseeable weakness is a lack of experience, but if they are already winning tournaments in spite of that, it’s hard not to wonder...will there be a stop Team Triad’s iron grip over North Carolina, or shall we all be sent blasting off, time and time again?
King Nanney and the Princes Mofonzo and Money
Speaking of Team Triad and continuing trends, the two players are neck-and-neck so far this season. First, at GCTS 1, $mike took both Winner’s and Grand Finals; next, at GCTS 2, P’tah, the El Daoud took Winner’s Semis; and most recently, ShrimpLipz laid claim to Winner’s Finals and clutched out Grand Finals in a thrilling set at MKMT1. Training partners they may be, but one has to wonder what it would take for one to assert a streak over the other. Young Scaturchio’s Falcon, already blazing and furious; should we see him go even faster, strike even harder? And Scarslayer’s iron bird, quirky yet ingenious: for him, is there yet another muse, some aspect of creativity he has not considered?
Or maybe the record is so even because they are no longer looking at each other and instead seek a greater prize: Alex Nanney’s defeat. Indeed, how long has it been since a North Carolinian aside from Kevin Nanney has taken grand finals over Twitch (#1)? Alex has dropped sets at both tournaments he has been to this season, yes, but he has also overcome the odds to get first place at those events. It is as if the Catfish are gripped by a blood curse, an eternal prophecy: “None but a Nanney shall overtake a Nanney”. Superstitions aside, it will be interesting to see if Cam and Mike manage to seal the deal against MioM 62.5 in the coming months, and what they implement to do so.
Chinks in the Armor
Tension among the royals gives way to peace largely undisturbed in realms immediately lower. Kaeon, Stingers and Sharkz have all held true to their rank, with expected wins and losses to those higher and lower on the PR list. For example, Kaeon (#4), Stingers (#5) and Sharkz (#6) have all lost to Cam, and have all thwarted Sprankles’ attempts to break into the upper echelon. But I did say “largely undisturbed”...so where lie the warnings of revolt? Well, certainly not with Kaeon. His only “unexpected” loss was to Sharkz, to whom he has dropped a set before, and with whom he has only played one set this season.
Nay, our quarry lies further: if you look to Stingers, the consistent thorn in his otherwise predictable record has been one Mr. Ian MacNeill, AKA SlipnSlide. Combining defensive movement with severe punishment as Sheik, Slip has been able to take both sets vs. Stingers so far. The caveat is that these two sets happened in back to back weekends at the beginning of the month; was it simply that Stingers needed more time to figure things out? For further intrigue, you could also look to Sharkz: Gato, a skilled but unranked Marth, managed to take a set win against him at MCMV. While the score was evened the following week at MKMT 1, that these two are training partners means that we should be looking not only for whether or not Gato can do it again, but also who will manage to come out on top by the end of this ranking period.
Burninated Countryside
Tension gives way to peace, and peace gives way to furious violence: Ranks 7 and below are very much in contest so far. Sprankles (#8) has been the most consistent of them all, having no unexpected losses and having the 1-0 edge on Weilin (#7). This, combined with the fact that Weilin has dropped a set to an unranked player (Ambition), may leave Sprankles as the de-facto 7th rank, though Weilin is overall positive vs. Ambition still (2-1 across three different tournaments). Along with his aforementioned wins, SlipnSlide (#10) also has one set win over BossaNova (though the overall set count is 1-2 from the same tournament). Despite his good wins, Slip also has losses to those below him, to Tah. (#11) and Stargazer (#13). While a win vs. Slip should be considered a strong start for these two, it should be noted that they have no wins against others ahead of them on the rankings. Rounding off the ranked Raleighites is Sky (#12), who is still looking for a win against those above him, but has dropped sets to those unranked such as Haise and Saef (HM) (though he is 1-1 with Saef).
Oh, speaking of honorable mentions, no one is safe there, either. Saef? Showing signs of life with a win against Sky, but the record is overall even, has been unable to win upon encountering other ranked players, and has one unranked loss this season (Ambition). Jwilli? Many losses to unranked players, but perhaps slightly counterbalanced by a win vs. Slip at MKMT1. GCS? Has a win vs. [email protected] from MADD Asheville, but dipped out early in winner’s at MCMV to shredman3, though that remains his only unranked loss. Libner? Hasn’t shown up for anything. Vying for honorable mentions at least at this point are Gato, Haise and Ambition, who each have at least one win against a ranked player and scarce losses vs. unranked players.
Calm before the Storm
The first weekend of February has passed, and we have already seen some interesting results. At MCMVI, GCS was sent to losers by Tiger, who was then put into losers by brett3; Brett and GCS eventually met in loser’s finals and had a five game set. If these results do not interest you, have no fear: there’s plenty more chances for battle this month. While this weekend there is a brief lull in tournaments (presumably due to Valentine’s Day weekend), the weekend after hosts the next NEG event and the final iteration of a venerated NC tournament series, Midstate Massacre 6. This is likely to be widely attended by many players, including most of the current NC Power Rankings.
To those who can’t make that, FPS follows the day after; and if that’s not enough, the final weekend of February has Pier Pressure 3, Gate City Smash 3 and The Plank @ Ox Monthly in Greenville. While FPS may not have a huge amount of non-Charlotte attendees due to its date proximity to MSM4, you can be sure to expect a high degree of competition at the other three events. Pier Pressure 3 is the last beach tournament of the season and is popular with smashers in Raleigh as a well-run, comfortable, multi-game event. Gate City Smash 3 is held in a time-honored venue, located relatively centrally, and hosted by well-loved long time Smashers Sneak and BEHR. Last but not least, while the Greenville Monthly happens on the same day as GCS3, high-level multi-game entrants such as Sharkz and Stingers do live in Raleigh, and their carpools may bring interesting competition to that venue too.
Will doubles continue to be dominated by a Pokémon pair? Who pulls ahead first: Mike or Cam? How consistent are Kaeon, Stingers and Sharkz anyways? And just who is going to take responsibility and clean up those bodies in aisles 7 through HM? All this, and maybe more, awaits us in the next NC newsletter.
