Statements by Dr Hinshaw
Comments on Today's Numbers
  • Rise in hospitalizations is 3.1% in last 2 weeks (5% is the "trigger threshold")
  • Number of factors accounting for this, including rising community cases and hospital outbreaks
  • 16 ICU beds, 23% of 70 bed allotted capacity (interjection: 50% is trigger, if memory serves)
  • Edmonton Zone is still concerning
  • It has been 2 weeks since voluntary measures have been established and reproductive value has begun to slow "somewhat" (R from 1.35 to 1.17 now). Needs to continue to work and bring R below 1.0
Schools
  • Active Alerts/Outbreaks (1+ cases) in ~8% of all schools, 512 cases total
  • 96 schools on outbreak (2+ cases) with 26 on watch list (5+)
  • In-school transmission in 69 schools, 44 with only 1 new case from it
Ease of Covid-19 Spread
  • Significant spread can occur quickly even despite best intentions. Highlights: (1) a wedding where 43/63 people were given Covid-19, (2) a social party where 8/24 (to date with continued work on this event), and (3) a workplace gathering where a common social event with 9/29 contracting Covid-19 (again, to date)
  • It is critical for all social gatherings to remain small and to maintain distance
  • "Covid-19 really does love parties" and it's important to keep it in mind
Testing Procedure Change
  • In mid-September, the cold and flu season resulted in changes to the testing procedure to limit asymptomatic testing
  • Even with this shift, wait time have not decreased enough in order to use lab test information to prevent spread optimally due to the number of cold/flu symptoms
  • With Covid cases and symptomatic cases rising, more changes are needed
  • All asymptomatic testing in people with no known exposure will be paused. Appointments booked will be kept until November 4th
  • All symptomatic individuals or close contacts of an outbreak are still given testing
  • 659,000+ tests given for asymptomatic no known exposure with 0.11% positive, up from ~0.07% reported previously
  • The now excluded tests accounted for 30% of tests conducted. Removal of them should improve turnaround, increasing capacity for getting negative testing students back to school, employees back to work, and contact tracing
  • Thanks pharmacies and community pharmacies will not be booking new tests, but all existing appointments will be honoured until the 4th
Other
  • Reiterates the need to work with contact tracers - there is "no shame in being exposed" and, while it can be frustrating about Covid-19's impacts, case identification is important
  • Reminder that influenza shots are available and that flu shots will help protect your health and insulate the Covid-19 infrastructure
Q&A - Cases in Alberta
  • Common traits of spread events?: All inside with many people indoors "in a social context". Maybe not all procedures were not followed (screening, distance, masking, etc)
  • What is the "state" of Covid-19 in Alberta?: "At a point that is critical". Other jurisdictions have seen a rapid escalation. Alberta isn't there yet, but still "in a danger zone". Next stretch of time will determine which direction Alberta will follow
  • Lethbridge leads in infections/100k and 9 outbreaks. Will it need additional restrictions?: Spread in Lethbridge is relatively well known, unlike Edmonton. Additional voluntary measures in Edmonton for that reason
  • Response to calls for mandatory restrictions?: No one perfect solution, with timing of mandatory restrictions a matter of debate...e.g. - mandatory measures now may impact other sides of health and we currently do not know if we can correct without use of them. Giving Albertans "every opportunity" to chip in voluntarily before mandatory measures are enforced
  • Is this a second wave?: Notes the spread is generally defined by influenza, which will "wash over" and pass if we hold on. Covid-19's persistence means that people have to work together to restrict its spread
  • Wedding celebration in Calgary?: Defers to local colleagues who may have more details
Q&A - Other
  • Why is there a delay with Federal tracing app?: Technical challenges in transitioning ABTraceTogether users to federal app (which has been updated to allow it to work in the background of iPhones). Discussions underway
  • Message to non-compliant Albertans?: To non-compliant Albertans, think about those in your lives who are older. What would you want others to do to protect them?
  • Changes to Halloween guidance?: Doesn't directly answer, but notes indoor social gatherings are a risk and not recommended and encourages trick-or-treating in small groups
  • New models?: Not working on predictive modelling like in the spring, but has been working with models for decision making purposes
  • Testing capacity?: There appears to be confusion. Surge capacity target was always intended to be 20,000 and was planned by pulling from other departments. Increases in efficiency and throughput is still underway (average daily testing capacity is 15-16,000, highest per capita in country)
  • Response to federal request to have "quarantine sites"?: Not personally involved in conversations. Provincial effort has been made to limit household transmission and for use for incoming travel

SoS: Friends of Mineral Town Character Designs (comparison and review, w/ pictures) (long post)
I just really like evaluating character designs. Been seeing a lot of praise and disgust over the redesigns, so I thought I'd throw my opinion into the ring.
PROTAGONISTS
(Left to Right, Top to Bottom) Claire, Pete, Naomi, Yuuta, and the child
  • Surprised that there wasn't much of a redesign for Claire and Pete. Well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  • Instead we get two new protagonists, Naomi and Yuuta, who dress in more modern clothes. Naomi's outfit is honestly pretty cute. The new protagonists' clothes do fit everyone else's character designs better, but you can dress Claire and Pete in those outfits anyway so it doesn't matter.
  • Bit of wasted potential having just generic kids and not a unique kid design depending on whoever you married. I'd settle for just colorswaps like the Harvest Sprites.
I actually like the new designs for the marriage candidates. The character designer said the reason for the large difference was to separate the characters from their Back to Nature counterparts and make them their own characters. (Also, semi-related: WHY DIDN'T THEY BRING BACK RIVAL MARRIAGE? I mean, I know why, but it really made the town feel more alive. Everyone made a cute couple, so I always preferred the shipping route where I pair up everyone else and go after Huang or something.)
BACHELORETTES
(LR,TB) Elly, Karen, Marie, Popuri, Ran, and Jennifer
  • Gotta mention it now, I really like the "mountain village" patterns on everyone's clothes. The style may be more modern, but it has that rustic flair. I wonder why everyone's bangs "flow" to the right. Elly's used to "flow" to the left, why not keep it? It would've made for some variety.
  • Elly was originally a baker. In her redesign, it's much more obvious that she's meant to be a rustic town nurse, with her compressed sleeves, pockets with medical crosses on them, the ribbon's tails looking like angel's wings. I'm a little iffy on the lipstick. I know Elly's more mature, but it makes her look a little too mature. Still, I prefer new Elly. Her design was much too plain and frumpy for me when I was a kid, but now she actually looks like an interesting character.
  • Karen's original design wasn't bad, but it's a bit too dated. Multicolored hair, high-waisted denim shorts with a belt, sneakers with white knee socks--it's all so trapped in the 90s. Her personality in FoMT was also more a cool big sister type than a brash tomboy like her old design suggests, and the new design fits that better. Her blonde bangs may be gone, but to compensate, her hair has a nice gradient going from light to dark. Her design is much more ladylike, with lipstick and a long sleeved sweater, but it still has that tomboyish look with the denim shorts and boots. She doesn't really look like the heavy drinker type anymore, but I find it funnier that a character with that design can drink adult men under the table.
  • Aw, Marie's adorable, even more so now! Marie is an exception to the "design clearly not made for this character" because she was always a librarian. I like her new hair, it's really cute. She's still wearing a school uniform for some reason, but it's a pretty one. Marie always looked like a kid to me in the original game, but somehow, despite the pigtails and school uniform, in the remake she actually looks like someone in her 20s. Marie's bangs are gone, making her look more confident, but now that I think back to it, Marie was never really shy, she was just quiet. I wish rival marriage was still around, she and Gray were really cute.
  • Popuri was created as a flower girl, so her new design gives her a shorter, sturdier dress and boots more suited for someone working in a chicken ranch. Her new hair is really cute, too. Unfortunately, it doesn't convey her personality as well as the others do. Popuri's spunky and bratty and devil-may-care. Her new design makes her look like the sweet girl-next-door. If she had the dress, bangs, and original Popuri's hair + hairband, it'd be perfect. But this one's too ladylike.
  • Ran's design also gets the too-girlish complaints, but I think it fits Ran quite a bit. I mean, she works in an inn here, not a ranch. Still, she was meant to be a tomboy, and apparently still is. Maybe have her blouse be shorter and have half of her bangs or all of her bangs pinned back.
  • Jennifer is a new character, so I'll talk about my thoughts on her. She has a really nice design and colorscheme. But she's boring. I get it game, she's a hippie. It's rather disappointing that they never go into her past in her route. Apparently she's a socialite tired of the high life who preferred to go Back to Nature. Why not incorporate that into her events instead of constantly retreading her being spacey and one with nature? Hell, Brandon had the same "one gimmick" problem, but at least there were always new details about him brought up in his events.
BACHELORS
(LR, TB) Gray, Kai, Rick, Doctor, Cliff, and Brandon
  • Gray's new design got a lot of flack since it was so drastic, but I actually like it a lot more. People complained that he looked way too young now, but honestly, he looked more like a kid with his original design. I know the old art style was chibi, but I could read everyone else as an adult. Gray looked like a snotty twelve-year-old asshole character in a kids' anime. I avoided him when playing the GBA version because of that. Playing the Switch version, I discovered he was actually just socially awkward and quiet. I missed out because his original design was too misrepresentative of his character. His original design didn't fit his FoMT role and personality either. Old Gray is from when he worked on a horse ranch as Ran's brother, but he wasn't in FoMT, so his jockey suit and horse cap weren't fitting. His new design conveys the "city boy who just moved in" part of his story better than Old Gray. He's still got his hat, it's just his clothes now. The gloves on his hand still align with his profession.
  • Kai's new design didn't change very much, but it fits him much more. His colorscheme of purple and white along with the patterned sleeveless hoodie and beanie really convey the role of "laidback food shack owner".
  • Out of the characters who'd get a more top-heavy design, I didn't expect it to be Rick. You'd think Gray the blacksmith would get buffer before the chicken guy did. Then again, maybe it does fit, since Rick had to be the man of the house and do all the heavy lifting and work (especially with Popuri always ducking out of her work). New Rick has the same problem that New Popuri has. He's too pretty for the dorky and overly-panicky character he is. His new outfit is fine, but his face is just too ikemen for a loser like Rick. If Rick had bigger or rounder eyes maybe, this design would be perfect.
  • People were mad about Doctor's design too, saying it was too plain-looking. ...Guys, really? Original Doctor doesn't look plain to you? In fact, he looks like a moron with that outdated head mirror. I do miss his messy hair, but like Karen, I guess there's a little more comedy in someone so clean-looking making you drink untested and potentially harmful medicines. I do like the new Doctor design still. I thought the original one made him look a little too old for a marriage candidate (it was the head mirror), but now he actually looks like someone in his mid-20s to early-30s. ...Hang on, they trimmed his eyebrows.
  • Cliff's design is WILDLY different. His weird blond tips are gone (apparently they were a hint to who he was related to in his original incarnation?) and his ponytail's gone too! Gone are his wildman falconer clothes, replaced with colorful fantasy character travelling wear. It's...actually not too bad. His new design reminds me of Bartz Klauser, who is one of my favorite Final Fantasy characters, so that added points. His old design looked like a rough around the edges wildman. Like Gray, I ignored him because of his misrepresentative design. While playing the Switch version, to my surprise, he's the best regular marriage candidate. I have a thing for self-conscious boys who have no idea what chads they are (the description for 90% of the male protagonists in my stories) and Cliff fits the bill. Everyone has these patterns on their clothes, but Cliff's are more rectangular, which emphasizes that he's a foreigner. He also looks more like someone who works at a winery than old Cliff did. This one gets a surprising A+ from me.
  • I used to fucking hate Brandon. My first impression was just the design, which was the right amount of cool. Then I met him in game and he turned out to be kind of a dipshit who wouldn't shut up about art. But he grew on me. Mostly because Gotts was involved in his events and I love Gotts. His dynamic with Gotts is pretty entertaining, with Gotts constantly having to remind Brandon to take care of himself. Brandon's Orange Heart event with him admitting he's been freeloading off of Gotts while fixing up your buildings with woodworking skills he learned from living with Gotts was great. I think that's what Jennifer was missing, a second character to bounce off of. Speaking of Jennifer, I still wish there were rival marriages because Jennifer and Brandon are practically made for each other. Spacey weirdos that dress like Coachella attendees who live in the woods and won't shut up about their passion? It's perfect.
SPECIAL MARRIAGE CANDIDATES
(LR, TB) Bon Vivant, Harvest Goddess, Huang, Kappa
  • Never cared about Bon Vivant. I like the new steampunk aesthetic he has. That bishonen portrait haunts my nightmares.
  • Not a big fan of the new Harvest Goddess. I think the redesign is because her old one is being used for a specific character already, so they had to come up with a new one for this game. But it's lame. She looks more like a fairy than a goddess, as in she looks less powerful. Her dress looks like a cheap costume than a goddess's attire. If her eyes were angled the same way the old design's were, she'd exude more power and sassiness. Maybe it's the blunt bangs too.
  • Hey look, now I actually want to romance Huang for a reason other than to leave the rival marriages alone. First of all, he looks less racist now, even in his name! Second, he also looks like someone in his mid-20s now and not a creepy-looking guy. That little apple in his portrait, I love it. I like how his dialogue is written now, it has a bit of an ESL sound to it while still sounding like a slick car salesman deal. I don't think he spoke Chinese at all in the original translation, but now he says "xie xie" when you give him a good gift and I really like that. Being from a country where most of the population is bilingual or multilingual, it felt like home, y'know? His new hair reminds me of Claude von Riegan from Fire Emblem, who is one of the top anime husbandos of all time.
  • Speaking of anime husbandos, I didn't know Sasuke Uchiha was in this game. Yeah yeah, it's Kappa. I love how unabashedly anime his new design is, despite his personality, role, and screentime being exactly the same. His anime portrait also haunts my nightmares.
TOWNSPEOPLE
(LR, TB) Anna, Basil, Carter, Dudley, Duke, Ellen, Gotts, Harris, Jeff, Manna, Mei, Mugi, Saibara, Sasha, Thomas, Yu, Zack, Lou, and Van
  • Anna's new design retains her graceful appearance while connecting her more to her family. Basil's eyes are kind of creepy, not sure why. I remember him being bulkier too, but maybe I'm misremembering. He does have that botany professor energy.
  • Ah, the disappointment when Carter was redesigned. I feel you, I thought he was cute too when I was ten. But I think this fits better. Not only does it align with the Harvest Goddess belief more, it also doesn't trick you into thinking Carter is a good person like the old design did! In the original, when he'd cuss at you in confessional, his design tricked me into thinking "he's probably right", but now I see Carter for the bitch he is and so I raise my middle finger at him.
  • Why does Dudley look like that. His tiny eyes with prominent eyelashes set in the middle of a very rectangular face with a pedostache. Saibara's design didn't change very much, but he has a worker's outfit now, which fits much more.
  • Duke's and Manna's designs are good! Duke looks less intimidating and stuffy and more fatherly. Manna also actually looks like an adult woman, and her grape earrings are a nice touch. Why does her dialogue scroll so slowly, though? The joke is that she doesn't stop talking, but it'd be funnier if her dialogue went at lightning speed without time to read it all, like Wendy Oldbag from Ace Attorney or N from Pokemon.
  • Ellen and Mugi are practically the same, and so are Mei and Yu. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  • Gotts lost his rugged appearance. He looks so friendly now, doesn't he? A little less depressed. One one hand, his depression hair from the old design fit his backstory of his wife and kid dying on the mountain, but on the other, his new design has that sort of "old man with tragic backstory but still smiles and laughs and enjoys life" feeling to it. Zack's kinda creepy looking now, though. Small eyes, skeevy mustache, way too long head...
  • Harris traded his rectangles for circles, and Thomas traded his round for tiny. Gotta be honest with ya, I was wondering for the longest time why they lived in the same house, and I came to the conclusion that they were a gay couple. Turns out they're father and son. Whoops.
  • Jeff and Sasha have some pretty different designs, but they're very fitting. Jeff doesn't look like a waiter anymore. This time he sports longer hair, a sweater, and slacks that emphasize how much of a doormat he is. Sasha's original design was apparently for a sad, grieving character, so the new one fits her sassiness much better.
  • Lou and Van are apparently from other games. I've only ever played FoMT and an hour of DS, so I don't know who they are outside of that. Their designs don't seem to have changed, instead we get HD artwork, which is fine too.
oh shit i forgot lillia
  • EDIT: Just realized I forgot Lillia. Her design is cute. She's rounder and sweeter, like ripe fruit.
TLDR: The new designs are really good (except Popuri, Rick, the Harvest Goddess, Dudley, and Zack).

2020.10.20 15:55 UyenNhi_0411 The horror stories in Vietnam ( Ghost dog)

According to the elders passed down, in the house should not have a red-nosed white dog, this dog is a lover in the guise of a dog, which can harm the owner. Keep it, usually a dog; but sometimes it turns into human form to cause harm to humans. I have heard many stories of white dogs, and dog owners have been victims of it. The story is that a rich man has a white dog with a red nose, only when the dog has a red nose, it is worth to be wary of, but if the dog has a white nose or a black nose or another color, the dog is just a dog with many ears. painting. When his female dog gave birth to a group of five puppies, including a red-nosed white dog, many people advised him to beat it to death, or to let him grow, he should pick up plum, he did not listen and said: - A dog is a dog, a white dog, a black dog, a yellow dog, a dog is a dog even though its nose is black, golden brown or white. He kept raising dogs. There were friends from nearby who saw that his house had a litter of dogs, they asked him for permission, and no one asked for a red-nose white dog. This dog, after breastfeeding, began to know how to eat rice very quickly, when he was growing up looking so beautiful, he was a ferocious dog, very good watchdog, and his life as well as other Another dog, also removes baby feces and loves to eat dirty!
Some people advised him to be cautious, lest it be possible, he did not believe, he thought it was a miracle, believing it was just a superstition. His house is tiled, with sloping roofs, with gutter to catch rainwater in shallow pools, difficult to climb roofs. Whenever the house leaks, it is difficult to replace a tile to climb. Yet one night, he heard the sound of people walking on the roof with a cane. He thought it was a thief, so he pretended to cough so that the thief saw that someone was awake and went out. With his coughing sound, indeed the sound on the roof softened gradually, when it reached the end of the gable, it was completely gone. The next night he heard the same sound again, he sat up and lit the lamp, the sound fading away. Then the third night, the fourth night, the event recurred. This thief was very brave, his way of stealing only worked overnight, not making the thief completely afraid. He had to watch and give this thief a match so that he would not dare come to look for a way at his house from then on. He took the crossbow, which used to be guarded at the roof, with the bundles of arrows down, and then Thursday night, he put the arrows on the crossbow and waited, the door opened to the yard, not just closed.
It was just past midnight when he heard a sound like four nights ago. That night was dark, with no moon, though many stars, but the starlight was not bright enough for people to see clearly what they wanted to see. Walking out to the yard, the rich man looked up at the roof. His bedroom was near one end of the gable, when he came to the yard he stood in front of this room, so looking up at the roof, he could only see where he stood, but on the other end he could not see clearly. On that clear side, he could see a figure of people, head wearing a hat, walking stick with hands. He was surprised, stealing something so strange, stealing again wearing a hat and walking stick. He decided to look closely, through the darkness, he saw a man not very tall, a seven-eight-year-old child, short arms and legs! Which house is this mischievous devil? The shadow sometimes looks like it looks far away, seems to be waiting or looking forward to something! Regardless, whatever he wanted, whether he was a thief or a mischievous child, he raised his crossbow to shoot an arrow in the direction of the shadow, intentionally shot slightly far from the target to intimidate, he did not intend to hit, e regret children die The arrow shot up, about a meter from the black shadow. The shadow startled, then only whipped one, it plunged into the darkness disappeared!
The rich man returned in, unable to help wondering about what had just happened, he lay thinking wandering about before he could sleep. The next morning, when he got up, he couldn't make tea to drink water, his wife asked: - My teacher, my hat last afternoon to stay in the kitchen, did he do anything to? - It's evening, I did nothing to the hat, where did you leave it? His wife did not forget, when coming back from the field, she hooked the hat to the ear of the rice mill by herself. This morning she was about to go to the field to find it. Phu Ong made tea and poured his wife a cup of water. Then his son from outside the garden came in, took his mother's hat and said: - Mother's hat, who brought it out the garden fence, I found it. Next to the hat is this stick.
The rich man said: - I guess anyone is playing with anything. The wife did not say anything, finished her tea, picked up her hat and put on her head and went to the field to look after the plow worker. He continued to wonder about the hat and the stick. Then a neighbor came to play, the rich man told him what happened last night, clearly stating the fact that his wife's hat was thrown outside the fence. The neighbor did not say anything, drank water, ate betel nut, and smoked and left. Coming to the gate, he invited the rich man to visit his house because he had a story to tell. While the rich man talked to his wife and children, as well as when he talked to the neighbor, the white and red-nosed dog kept wandering around under the bed or going out into the yard and back in again. Had it been a human being, would have been suspected of eavesdropping.
After a long time, the rich man went to visit his neighbor's house. After inviting guests into the house to eat betel nuts and drink water, the neighbor said: - I had to invite you over because the story told you, I don't want the red-nosed dog to hear. I noticed it just wandered around to eavesdrop what he said to me, and of course what I would tell him. The rich man asked surprisedly: - The white dog can eavesdrop? - It's correct! This white dog was not a dog, it was a ghost, and the black shadow he saw on the roof was him. The rich man said: - I don't believe it, the dog cannot know how to wear a hat and can walk with two feet. The neighbor said: - Oh my God! You are so pervasive! As a demon, it can walk with one leg and even walk with two legs. Didn't you hear what the old men said about the red-nosed white dog?
The rich man shook his head. The neighbor continued: - The elders said that a red-nosed white dog is a dog-shaped demon. He usually wears a hat with a cane to walk on top of the house. - What does it do that for? - So you let the black shadow walk on the roof of your house a child or something? Every family is so naughty at night! Besides, how dare a child rush away when he lets go of the arrow! Yes that fell on the body! Still climbing on the roof to do, I think, he climbed up to wait for his fellow ghosts. Maybe he dated a meeting with many other demons in red-nosed or white-nosed dog guise either at his house or elsewhere. It looked in the distance to see its friends there.
The rich man was a little bit thinking, but he said: - In our village, other than me, no one has a red-nosed white dog! The neighbor smiled and said: - You are so silly! Isn't it waiting for dogs in my village! As demons, they can date even thousands of miles apart. Your dog, he probably made an appointment with his comrades, these comrades were not close together. Phú did not say anything, his face doubted, he took a cigarette for his pipe tobacco, picked up a piece of betel and chewed, and then he told the neighbor: - You say so, I know that, but don't believe that a dog with a red nose is a demon. Dogs are dogs, ghosts are demons, how can dogs be ghosts.
- Believe it or not, it's your right, but believe it or not, you should transform your white dog. The rich man thanked his neighbor for what he said. He left in suspicion. He saw something reasonable about what the neighbor said, too: everyone's children would go around foolishly like that at night. And if it's human, how can you whip away when you shoot an arrow? Going back to the yard, the white dog wagged its tail happily. Looking at it he did not seem to be a ghost. He disobeyed his neighbor's reincarnation, he still loved it as a dog wagging its tail to celebrate its owner. Besides, the love horse is also very dear! He kept raising the dog until something bad happened at home. He had his first daughter named Vach, 18 years old that year. Ms. Vach looks very salty but charming. The village boy had many boys wanted to be a rich man.
Ms. Vach suddenly becomes sick, no way to cure any medicine, and sometimes delirious. While awake, she told her parents that at night she kept dreaming of a handsome young man, passing through the window and begging her to make love, she could not resist, and ever since she got caught This young man, she began to get sick. She told her parents again that the young man was very strange, never said anything, he came, pleaded with her, the rain was finished and he left. She asked him never to answer, she could not resist, wanted to cry out but moan. The rich man were worried that their daughter must be haunted by an evil spirit. On the one hand, he took care of the guard, he invited the teacher to ask himself for a talisman stuck in Miss Vach's room, and made offerings to eliminate evil. What he wanted to do, at night, Miss Vach still saw a handsome young man who did not talk quietly to rape her, her body was increasingly thin and pale.
The rich man borrowed the power to guard the door and the windows, and he himself woke up sometimes to his daughter's bedroom at night. However, with the incident that Ms. Vach was harassed by an evil spirit, the rich man happened another strange thing. Occasionally late at night, he heard someone washing dishes outside the water tank, once he and a plowman ran out to see a figure running away, leaving a basket of dirty dishes in the water tank. And every night like that, like the rice he saw with a lot, someone scooped it at night. Who is that, he is very worried. He expressed his concern to his neighbor. This man said: - Before, I told you not to listen! Everything that happens today is due to the old white-nosed dog. It was a demon, it turned out that the mute son raped his son, invited his fellow demons to his house to eat and wash dishes! Watch out and one day they will kill all your family! The elders said that in the past, there was a house to raise a sincere white dog, when they were in bad luck, the family members died one after another.
The neighbor's words made him even more worried. What should he do now, he asked, the neighbor replied: - There is only one way to invite magicians. And the most important thing to do is how to make a red-nosed white dog. But it was already a star, he watch, what his intentions it can know. If he knew he was going to change his life, he had to be careful lest it revert to his previous life. Don't tell anyone your intentions, including her and your children, and then when it's convenient and all of a sudden, you give it a blow of a knife or a sewing hammer to get rid of it. The rich man went home sadly. He regretted not hearing his neighbor from the old white nose red dog! Now that he has his heart, he will kill the white dog to eliminate the demon!
He focused his mind except red-nosed white dogs, but that was impossible for him to do. Perhaps the dog knew his intentions well, so even though he was still at his house, no one could get close to it, and sometimes he and a hunter-gatherer did not understand what miraculous it had, it always escaped , even when the filler had wrapped it into the chain of the chain. The neighbor asked him about Ms. Vach's condition and asked about the white dog, but he never brought these stories to the rich man's house, which could only be said when he met him on the street, or When the rich man came to his house, he smoked and ate betel and drank water. He advised the rich man to be very careful, do not let the dog know his intention to kill it, it knows, it will try to kill him first.
The words of the neighbor made him even more worried. After all, the charm, everywhere heard the sound of the teacher, he invited him to the house to eliminate ghosts and heal Ms. Vach. It's expensive and the results go nowhere! Then one night, waking up, he went to Ms. Vach's room to visit her son and watch the watch of the farmer. The filler collapsed his head right in the sleeping window, and in the curtain of Ms. Vách, there was a shadow of a person. He raised his voice to awaken the filling force, then out of the curtain, Miss Vách burst out into a white ball, tumbling through the window, past the head of the filler. The white ball was not a human figure, not an object that looked similar to the hat-stick ball he had previously seen on the roof. The two-ball target is one, and probably just a red-nosed white dog!
His anxiety multiplied. He sat and talked to the man for a while to keep an eye on his daughter, and went back to his bedroom. As he walked towards the top of the gable to sleep, he heard the sound of the rustling at the back of the house in the garden. Suspecting that the thief was planning to steal, he crept to the wall and looked over the crack. Not the thief, the things he saw frightened him with a sweat! He saw a group of people and dogs sitting around eating and drinking together, two of them, the rest of them all, two of them about the size of a child of seven or eight. There is a dog, a dog body but a human head, a dog with a full dog shape. They are eating and talking. Look at the tray placed between the people and the dog, it is the one he still uses to serve rice. Bowls and chopsticks are also the same bowls and chopsticks that are used everyday.
Seeing people and dogs gathering, the hair on the back of his neck stood upright, but when he heard them talking, he had no souls. They discussed each other, after capturing the soul of his daughter, a bitch will capture the soul of his son, Mr. Tuong and her sister Vach, only sixteen years old this year. One dog-headed dog told another: - I want to arrest Tuong, I have to arrest him now! Watch out if his father knows, his father sends him elsewhere then it is a problem! The other dog, too, replied: - His father knows how. What I'm talking about here, who can listen in. One of the two, the dog carrying a humanoid, said: - Then the father and his family, we will arrest them all. They will die without burying! Very scared, the rich man crept back to his bedroom, walked very gently, fearing the dogs love ghosts would have bad consequences. The next morning, when he looked ahead and looked back, he could not see the white and red-nosed dog. Grandmother, far away from his home in another village.
He also went to his neighbor's house again to report what had happened the night before at his house, and to counsel him on how to deal with the ghost dogs, the neighbor said: - Now we only have a way to find the Master Self-arrogant and ask for amulets to cover the whole house, fortunately we can eliminate them! He said he invited some of the high-handed monks and asked for amulets all over the house, but it was not good. The neighbor now has only one way to pray to God and Buddha. He advised both grandparents at night to burn incense to pray to Heaven, and share to go to the temples to pray to the Buddha. He also advised the rich man to go to the communal house to pray to Duc Thanh Hoang so that he could use his authority to eliminate the demons. There was no other way, the rich man and his wife shared to go to the temple to pray to the Buddha and God to help his family through the accident. At night, he and his wife both lit incense in the sky to pray.
They go to the ceremony just go to the ceremony, pray to God, pray to God, unusual things still happen at his house as usual. Ms. Vach was still night and night in his dream, someone came to press willow flowers, and he always heard that in the night there was a sound of washing dishes outside the water tank. Luckily, he overheard the dogs' gossip, sending Mr. Tuong away so he avoided the accident for me! The two of them were worried and scared, both thinning out, and emaciated as if dismayed. While his family was in that state, one day an old nun came to his home to encourage him. He brings rice money to worship. After receiving the rice money, the monk left to go to other houses, but instead of leaving, the monk asked him for a break in the house for a few days. The monk said: - The nuns come from far away, so tired, unable to continue to raise the religion, please forgive the owner, if the house has a lot of room for the nuns to stay for a few meals, when the nuns will go again.
Both the rich man and his wife respectfully welcome and invite the monk to think in the house above, which means the main house of the family. The old monk again agreed with the two grandparents who wanted a place to recite Buddha's name. The old monk said: - Nuns are religious, and have to chant Buddhist prayers every day. dare to bother the benefactor to lend the nuns to borrow a incense to set up a Buddha altar, with an altar, the chanting will be serious. The rich man and his wife invited the old monk to place the Buddha altar on the altar of his family, so the rich man's ancestors would also hear the sutras.
The old monk took out a Buddha image and placed it on a incense stick, which is higher than the top of bass. Immediately after that the incense lamp was lit and the old monk started reciting Buddha's name. Phu Ong did not understand what the old monk chanted, he only knew that the old monk was attentive to the scripture, did not pay any attention to everything outside, one day he only ate one meal at noon, a vegetarian meal by the couple he delivers, and late night the old monk chants the chants very late. The old monk chanted the sutras like that, always three days in a row, thinking only at the time of his birth, and late at night until morning The husband and wife are rich in the old master's servant, and they feel like they are light in their hearts, and all their worries are dissipated. The remarkable thing is that during the three consecutive nights, from the day the old monk started chanting, the ghostly events did not happen as before. Ms. Vach night did not see the ghosts to harass and harass and the dogs did not seem to see the meeting at the rich man's house.
On the fourth morning, the old monk disguised himself as a rich man to continue his education promotion. The two grandparents who tried to keep it also could not be, giving rice to the old monk refused to use the excuse for a few days of staying, the old monk had harassed them a lot. The two grandparents saw off the monk's feet until the village head and came back. When he got home, the rich man was told by the farmer that the red-nosed white dog did not understand why he was lying dead in the bamboo bushes. Now the rich man understands that the old monk is a noble monk because his family chants Buddhist chants of subtractive demons.

2020.10.18 13:59 bdzikowski Native Speakers: does my writing strike you as unnatural?

English is my second language, but I've been writing in it for over 30 years and with some success. I've published stories in US literary magazines and received praise for good dialog in my movie scripts, which I even got optioned in Hollywood (by a small company, nothing earth-shattering.)
I decided to write a YA Dark Fantasy book in English.
It is already edited by a person I hired and it's self-published, and I have good reviews, but there were like 3 people who pointed out that they can tell that English isn't my first language and that reading my book makes their heads hurt.
Now, I'm skeptical (or hopeful) that they may be biased, as it's fairly obvious by my name I'm not a native speaker, and I have, after all, those several small accolades I mentioned above which seem to prove my English writing can be enjoyable to readers. I'm posting a sizable chunk of Chapter 1, but of course I think it would be enough for you to glance at a paragraph or two to answer my question. Thank you in advance!
TLDR: Non-Native speaker here. Does my (edited) writing strike you as unnatural and odd-sounding? Don't read it whole ;)
CHAPTER 1
On his trusty Italian bike with paint chipped from years of use, Gabriel rode down the side street so fast his hair flew in the wind and his messenger bag with schoolbooks banged against his ribs. This morning felt great, full of new hope. The air was cold and fresh. His two-week-long headache was gone. And he was toying with the idea of finally gathering the courage to ask Andrea out. Most of the kids at school were already seeing someone, or at least it seemed that way. A few days earlier he had read a piece online about how experts considered sixteen the proper age to start dating and he was feeling hopelessly behind schedule.
He was passing by a dilapidated community playground with its rusty iron swings and sandbox full of dirty, gray sand. Surrounded by a chain-link fence, it had been closed for a long time, with a big padlock hanging from the gate, and Gabriel had never seen anybody playing there. It spoke of short, unhappy childhoods, where a boy must quickly learn to fight and a girl quickly starts to put on makeup and pierces her ears. An inner-city playground. The old-time, metal swing-sets seemed too dangerous for the modern governance of the district. Afraid of a court case, and lacking funds for refurbishing, they preferred to lock it down.
Gabriel saw something. He frowned and slowed down. Some sick bastard had hanged a pigeon on the fence. There was a noose made of wire wrapped around its neck and it hung there, stiff, dark and rotting.
“Gabriel!”
The voice was so close that he panicked, jerked the bike’s handlebar and crashed to the ground. He got up on his knees and looked up at where the voice had come from. A sudden gust of wind hit the street, pushing apart old newspapers and empty soda cans.
In the deserted playground, behind the fence, a strange man was sitting on a swing and staring straight at him. The man was so pale that his skin was almost blue. His lips were thin and pale too, smiling a mean little smile. His bony face was specked with pockmarks, and his long, dirty hair was bound in a ponytail, sticking out from his mangy vagabond’s hat. Over his black tracksuit he wore a dark, dirty coat. On his feet he had sports sneakers, grayed with time, raggedy and missing the laces.
But Gabriel paid attention only to his eyes, as they were the strangest thing about the man. The irises of his eyes were a fluctuating yellow color, like flames in slow motion.
The man jumped off the swings and spread his arms in a mock welcome.
“I was losing hope of ever meeting you. What with me being locked in this … conundrum of a place.”
Gabriel didn’t answer.
The man laughed and came forward. “I see parents taught you not to talk with strangers?”
Seeing as the man had no apparent way of reaching him through the fence, Gabriel gathered some courage, stood up and wiped his pants.
“Did you do that?” he asked, trying to sound manly and nodded at the pigeon. “That’s abnormal.”
“Oh…” The man looked at the bird. “No, I haven’t even noticed that, to be honest. Isn’t it odd? You should feel pity for those weaker than you, and not aggression. Unless you’re very insecure and feel no control over your own life.”
Gabriel shrugged and picked up his bike. It seemed undamaged.
“Anyway. So, now … you’re a Seer,” said the man, and smiled even wider, revealing his gray teeth. “It was a long time coming. So many headaches since you were little. Nasty feeling, eh? Have your parents taken you to a neurologist? Waste of time and nerves, in my humble opinion.”
Gabriel froze.
In fact, he hadn't told his mother about the headaches lately. He just kept stealing Ibuprofen from the medicine cupboard. The last time he told her about a strange headache, back when he was thirteen, she took him to a neurologist. They put him in a huge white tube at the clinic. Invisible rays penetrated his head and combed his brain with a deafening clatter. The neurologist couldn’t find anything, and indeed it was a great waste of time, money, and his mother’s nerves. But how did the strange man know all that?
Gabriel got on his bike. He was afraid again. His hands trembled.
“As you said yourself, I’m not talking with strangers, that includes mental cases,” he said.
“Now, you aren’t leaving just when we finally met…?” said the man.
Gabriel shrugged and turned his bike.
“Wait … please…” The man seemed genuinely sad to see Gabriel go. Gabriel’s fear turned into anger.
“Get lost, weirdo!” he said and rode away.
The man still stood there behind the fence, looking at Gabriel leave.
“See you later,” the man called. “When you’re ready! It’s not like I’m going anywhere.”
Gabriel had no intention of answering the hobo. He turned a corner and sped up, riding past a bustling marketplace. His hands were still shaking and his heart was thumping after the strange encounter.

Statements by Dr Hinshaw
Clarification
  • Often asked if parents of child with illness, but not positively tested for Covid-19 yet, need to isolate?
  • No, unless they are Covid-19 positive or close contact of a Covid-19 case
  • Child must be isolated from others at home
  • For young children, it may be best to have one parent provide all care
Schools
  • Students/Staff at 55 schools with alerts (1+ active cases) are off list
  • 1+ cases in 170 schools (~7%) with 370 active cases
  • 72 schools are on outbreak (2+) with 14 on watch list (5+)
  • In-school transmission has likely occurred in 27 schools, 21 with 1 case
Foothills
  • 2 deaths today are at the hospital centre
  • 83 cases (42 patients) linked to the centre
  • 2300+ tests conducted because of AHS' aggressive measures
Misericordia Hospital
  • 10 cases in 2 units
  • Widespread testing underway
  • Outbreak protocols being implemented
  • Visitation to affected units is limited, but rest of the hospital is safe
Voluntary Public Health Measure in Edmonton/Capital Region
  • The sharp rise in Edmonton is concerning
  • Past week has raised positive rate to 4% with a reproductive value has gone from 1 to 1.3
  • All parts of Edmonton Zone are being impacted
  • 36% cases exposed by close contact, 26% linked to outbreak
  • In cases of known transmission, household/community contacts are key driver
  • Social, family events continue to be a factor. Several workplace outbreaks have occurred
  • "Edmonton zone now faces a crucial juncture" - acute care impact is a lagging indicator by 1-2 weeks after cases
  • Action must be taken to control cases in the zone
  • Effective today, three voluntary measures have been announced
  • Voluntary because current hospital capacity can meet demand, but current data is "a call to action"
  • 1) Family/private gatherings are limited to 15 people (down from 50). Fewer is better. Does not affect schools, theatres, or worship services but Covid guidance must be followed. Wedding and funerals may not have the reduction occur immediately but it is still encouraged for those planned
  • 2) Masks should be worn in all indoor work settings, except when alone (e.g. cubicle) or with an appropriate barrier
  • 3) Limit the number of cohorts to 3 (previously it was to "limit the number" without specification): household, school, and one social/sport/other
  • Measures are necessary to prevent further escalation of Covid-19
  • Believes that Edmontonians look out for each other and will do their part
  • Will consider any further measures if needed
  • While specific to Edmonton, all parts of the province should take note
Q&A
  • How concerning are the case numbers province wide with Thanksgiving/Halloween?: Concern right now is specific to Edmonton. Is seeing a fairly steady rate, followed by a sharp spike. Need to continue keeping case rates stable
  • Why not make the measures voluntary?: Has been clear that the two measures for mandatory measures (raising of hospitalizations >5% over two weeks or 50%+ ICU beds occupied). At this time, voluntary changes are to give opportunity to slow the case rates before the acute care use rises
  • Why has Calgary avoided a surge?: Don't think we know 100%. Can offer theories (e.g. - Calgary had a high case rate initially, so work went into ensuring risk was understood). Reminder that this no time for complacency
  • Why was no action taken for so long given Edmonton being on the watch list for weeks?: Notes that we have seen rises/falls without such measures and its important to balance Covid/other health balance. Edmonton's recent cases have surged in the past week
  • Should Edmontonians be blamed?: Wouldn't say blamed, but also notes that Edmonton's different experience to date may need to be considered. Focus groups have noted some people will only take measure if they are personally impacted
  • Will "voluntary" measures hold enough weight?: Edmontonians will decide if "voluntary" means enough. Office has committed to be transparent about what would reverse relaunch. Those haven't been hit and office is keeping their promise, but is giving Edmonton a chance to prevent them
  • Changes to messaging for certain groups?: Cases are still highest in 20-39 case group, so messaging is on how their actions may affect others. Working with teams to determine what messages resonate and what motivates people
  • Level of concern with Coalhurst Good News Centre outbreak?: Each incident is concerning. Focused on on level of communication office has had with faith leaders and their groups

Statements by Dr Hinshaw:
Case Numbers and Trends
  • Recent increase in hospitalizations are driven by Foothills
  • Large number of cases in Edmonton is concerning - Reproductive number is 1.3 last week, with a rise in active cases
  • Looking closely at causes for drivers of increase
  • Conversing with local officials to see if additional measures should be recommended to lower transmissions
  • Alarming trend in active cases: 11% are attending work/social events while symptomatic and awaiting test results. This is a factor in rising cases
  • If you are sick, stay home. This includes Thanksgiving
  • Knows staying is hard for many people. Lab has been working hard to reduce turnaround time. It is their side of the bargain. Albertans need to uphold theirs and stay home when sick
  • "We cannot prevent a second wave [...] if we do not all take these basic steps"
  • Continues to advocate so employees can stay home when sick
  • If we cannot control the spread, we may need to consider more restrictive measures
Schools
  • 43 schools with alerts (1 case) have had no transmission
  • Active alerts/outbreaks (1+ cases) in 149 schools (~6%) with 319 active cases
  • 65 schools have outbreaks (2+ cases) with 10 on watch list (5+ cases)
  • In-school transmission seen with 18 schools, with 15 only seeing 1 case of spread
Serology Study
  • In June, the first study of ~9200 samples found antibodies in 1.01% of people
  • Into July and August, a study of 35,000+ samples, the antibody rate of antibodies in June-August did not rise. July had 0.55% and August had 0.74%
  • Possible rationales: variation in sampling (small June sample size)
  • Further research is underway, but indicates that swab testing program is not missing significant cases
  • Relying on buildup of antibody in population does not appear to be something we can rely on
  • APL will continue to repeat study so we can see changes in antibody rate
Thanksgiving
  • Knows many are planning for gatherings
  • Keep gatherings small, eat outdoors if possible, and only with your cohort
  • Do not share dishes and do not attend if sick
Q&A
  • Banning team sports, ala Quebec?: Alberta is not in that spot yet. Certainly in the cards if there is spread in sporting events combined and high case counts in province
  • How many rapid tests will be in Alberta?: Working with federal government at the moment. Doesn't have exact number in head. Will be used "strategically"
  • How many deaths are related to cardiac units of Foothills?: 2 of 8
  • A student in Grande Prairie waited 2 weeks for a test. What is the average time for a positive?: Changes depending on zone and doesn't know the average. Notes that there is difficulty for test collection some zones. 14 days is not timely
  • Ontario released new models "in public interest". Why not Alberta?: Spring as a "future forecast" didn't seem useful when it was attached to future dates. Current modelling being used for planning and not complete. Completion of models hasn't happened. Notes models won't change reality and what we see going forward is based on the decision of Albertans
  • What measures are being discussed with Edmonton?: Haven't decided on any particular measures yet. Wants to emphasize that cases today are based on spread 1-2 weeks. We will see high numbers of cases over last 1-2 weeks. Looking at transmission patterns to see what would be most effective
  • Number of suicides in province compared to last year? Is any rate unreasonable compared to control measures?: Working with office of chief medical examiner to understand trends in the numbers. Investigation takes time and accurate suicide numbers can take time. Preliminary numbers provided haven't identified rises over 5 year average over spring/summer
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Edmonton NE's active cases: 115 (rose above 100 over the weekend)
  • Edmonton Northgate's active cases: 124 (+8)
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 130 (+16)

2020.10.03 19:27 fresh_geosmin Threshold

I do not like finding myself in unexpected places, but I thought I was at least used to it. But when I woke up in a glass box in another country, I was not prepared.
I woke up on a concrete floor with a bright spotlight hitting me from the ceiling. As I rolled up and squinted, I saw I was in the corner of a room, but due to two thick glass walls, I was confined to an area slightly larger than a very large shower stall. I had no idea where I was or what had happened.
I stood up, dusting my clothes off and looked around. Through the two glass walls I saw only an empty windowless room. I knocked cautiously against the glass. It thudded dully like a wall. I frowned and looked behind me where the other two sides of my little area were formed by the concrete block walls of the larger room. The floor sloped slightly to a small drain in the corner. The glass seemed thick enough to be used for a zoo aquarium. I swallowed down fear as I wondered if this room could be filled with water, and couldn't see the ceiling above me because of the bright spotlight.
"HEI!" I yelled out. My voice sounded like the room muffled it. It didn't seem like anyone would hear me.
My hand went to my pocket for my phone when I realised all my pockets were empty. No phone. No ID. No keys. Where was I?? I tried to remember where I'd been earlier, but my head felt foggy. I remembered going to work, teaching classes. Was that today? I checked my glucose meter, which I change every three days. Still okay, for now.
Moments later someone walked into the room, a stocky looking man with reddish hair under a baseball hat, wearing jeans and an open flannel over a t-shirt. His eyes were on me and he immediately walked up to the glass wall.
I found myself taking a step back. I didn't recognise him at all.
"Ah, you're here. Can you hear me?" I heard these English words in a loud and round-vowelled American accent from above my head. I peered up again but still couldn't see anything because of the light. I looked back at the man, and noticed a lapel microphone on his flannel.
He took my looking up as a sign that I did hear him, and he continued. "Great! Listen, I know this is, uh, unusual, but you didn't seem to be getting our emails."
I blinked at him and put my hand to my temple. "Emails?" I asked. I looked around the room again. "Where am I?"
The man gave a smile. There must've also been a microphone somewhere in the box. "Welcome to South Dakota! We've been trying to get you here for some time now. The Institute really needs your help. We brought you here," he said. I was in the US??
"Institute..." I muttered, remembering the rule I made in my email client to dump everything from a particular address domain directly into the spam. An organisation which had been sending me mails to my work address about a topic I never breathed a word to anyone about, not even my wife.
I frowned at the man and started shaking my head. "I want nothing to do with this," I said.
The man shrugged. "We don't have anyone else to ask at this point. Not for what we need. Not that can do what you do."
I kept shaking my head. "But I don't do that. There are people, they do it as, as..." I was fumbling for my English phrases, "as a service. For money. They do whatever you want them."
"Yeah but, for money, as you said."
I held my arms out. "If you can put me in box, you can put them in boxes! I need to get home!"
"They can't Travel," he replied. I stared at him.
"And I do not!" I insisted.
"But you can, and we need that. We need that right now," he said, looking serious.
I covered my eyes with my hands tiredly. "Please. Send me home."
"You also have been working on nuclear magnetic resonance and molecular modelling. We need that expertise too."
"Lots of people work on that. It's everywhere," I argued. "There are people at every large manufacturer doing same work."
The man's face became more serious. "Listen, this is what's going on. Have you ever run into the Big Cold out there? You know what I mean? Well it's moving around. And it's been visiting us." He pointed his finger at the ground in front of him in emphasis.
I sighed. I thought I knew what he meant, though it "visiting us" made no sense to me.
"Thought you'd need some encouragement," the man said. He pulled something out of a pocket. I thought I recognised it from a distance, but went right up to the glass as he held it up. My daughter. A school photo of my five-year-old angel, in this strange man's hand. I pressed my hands against the glass.
"Where are they?" I demanded, trying not to panic. Please, I thought, these people don't have my family.
"They are completely safe," the man said calmly, "and they are not home."
I pounded the glass, which made almost no sound but a small slap noise. My wife! My kids! What the hell was going on?!
"Work with us. We're trying to stop this Big Cold thing, some way to trap it, and we can't do it without someone like you," the man said again.
"Please," I said again, but I had no hope for it. The man shook my angel's face in front of me. "We're the ones asking you, professor, to please assist us with this."
I stared down at my shoes on the concrete, where the glass wall met it, my hands still pressed against the glass. What could I do? Even if I somehow got out of this room, I had no passport, no money, no way to get home. I didn't have my test pack or insulin either. How did they bring me here? Just the idea of being in the US was nerve-wracking. While I once entertained the idea of visiting New York one day, the country was in such a state that I wouldn't feel safe travelling there. Yet now, here I was, and I didn't know where they had my family.
I looked up and into the face of the man on the other side. Did he have people he cared about? Did he know how this felt? I saw desperation in his eyes. And fear. "Help us," he repeated.
I sighed again and let my forehead rest against the glass. "Okay," I said. "Okay."
"Yeah?" the man asked with a look.
I raised my head and stepped back from the wall. "I will do... whatever it is. Just, just... don't hurt them." I gave the man a hard look. "And don't tell them."
I was a step away from the glass walls but jumped back further when they started to quickly slide down towards the ground, eventually becoming flush with the floor as if they'd never been there. I stood frozen in the middle of what used to be the glass room, staring at the floor.
"Hey, yeah, that's one way to let you out without a door," the man said. "Welcome."
"Hm," I said with a sigh, rubbing my eyes. This was how I started working on the problem with thresholds.
The first time I accidentally crossed a threshold, in the way nobody else did, I was stepping into the metro years ago. It was my "internship semester" where many students of my class went abroad, and I was in a large bustling city with a decent public transport system.
It had taken about a month of daily use before the language, timing and general surroundings were no longer novel and I became a more automatic traveller. So when I stepped in that day, I was not paying attention to anything but my music player (iPods were the rage back then), on my way back to my student room after classes.
I was standing only a few steps away from the edge of the platform, and the carriage slid into the edge of my view as I changed a song on my player. The doors opened, nobody stepped out, and I took a step in. But something went wrong.
I was already fully inside before I was overcome with this certainty that I was in the wrong train. I looked up, suddenly aware of my surroundings and how everything looked a little... yellow. Dirty sepia. The inside of the carriage I had just stepped into was worn, stained, and somehow a little off. I whirled around just in time to miss the door closing. The light coming in looked pale and yellow. My heart raced in a sudden panic. I was on the wrong line!
But I couldn't be. All of them on this platform went to my destination. It was just a few stops away. I stood there a moment, trying to figure out what I'd done wrong. Logically, this could not be the wrong line. Then I turned and looked into the rest of the carriage and my heart stopped.
The inside was a standing-room area, with fold-down seats lining the side walls, though this time of day wasn't quite yet busy. But some of the seats were occupied, and not by people.
I gaped as I saw several dark areas, shaped vaguely like people, but seemingly made up of jiggling squiggly black lines. Hundreds of tiny scribbles, moving randomly in three dimensions, making up man-shapes. Some of them were hunched over as if looking at something in their... hands? But others were staring forward with two empty round white spheres instead of eyes, like milky marbles. I was terrified.
After the brief darkness as we went through a tunnel, I saw several of the things were moving agitatedly. I thought I recognised the next station through the door window, but the shapes were moving towards me quickly and I backed away from the door to get away from them.
I plastered myself against the opposite door, which didn't open, while several dark squiggle-shapes clustered by the station-side door. The train finally stopped, the door opened, and the shapes shuffled out, completely ignoring me. Now they were outside, and I worried about stepping out, but decided I needed to get out of there. Just as I was about to though, a very large squiggle-person came right at me, stepping into the carriage. It stared at me with milky eyeballs. I backed up frantically until I was against the opposite door again, but it shuffled past me towards the main cabin body. It seemed to have completely ignored me. Then the door shut again, locking me in.
The whole time I was just filled not only with terror, but a feeling of wrongness which was so strong it seemed to put me on edge on a different level. I tried to calm down, looking for clues as to what the hell had happened. Everything was off. Sounds were muffled. The air was stuffy, thick, though without a particular smell. The cabin looked several decades old instead of the fairly modern interiors I'd gotten used to. And then I noticed the signs.
There are always signs inside trains and metros, everything from safety notices to advertisements, and only now I realised that the letters in these were distorted. I approached one I knew should say something like "Do Not Lean" on the double doors. Instead, the lines of the message were straight, but bits of letters seemed to be spread randomly along it. I looked at the stickers on the wall to my right, and the text was corrupted.
The train was slowing down again, and this time I was determined to get out before anything blocked my way. Although none of the jittery black shapes came near me this time, I was practically pressing myself against the door and as soon as they parted I nearly fell out onto the platform outside.
The moment I was out, the light brightened and I sucked in a breath of fresh, normal air and stumbled away from the platform edge before spinning around to look back. A completely normal-looking open doorway stood there, and normal-looking people were giving me strange looks as they stepped in. I wanted to warn them, but my voice was stuck as I saw them continue to walk into the main cabin body through the windows. Inside were ordinary people. I whirled around, looking at the whole platform around me. Everything was normal. I recognised I was one stop away from mine. The signs all looked fine; I could read them. People, ordinary people, were still giving me looks as they walked by, and I looked down at myself. My music player was still in my hand. I took several shaking breaths and decided I definitely did not want to get on the next train to my stop. I walked back.
When I got back to my student house, I immediately decided to try the Internet to look up what I'd just experienced. I ended up cancelling my evening plans as I spent almost all night searching everywhere. I even tried several languages. Usually you can find everything in English, it's the lingua franca of the Internet, but I tried others. Ultimately, I tried a language I was pretty terrible in after two semesters of it. I mean, I can get by in a bar, which as a student seemed good enough, but with help of an online dictionary I finally found something. A forum that seemed to discuss other versions of things. I was tired and desperate and made a post in the intro thread, first apologising for my poor language skills, then describing briefly about a place where things looked old and felt wrong, and then continued my search hoping for a reply in the meantime.
Around midnight, someone did reply, in a private message. Just a single question. "Did you go through a door?" This seemed promising. I replied yes, hoping the person was still online.
A few minutes later a reply came. "What do you want to do?"
I thought a bit. "How do I avoid that again," I typed back.
After another excruciating minute came a final reply. A link to a strange web page called "thresholds.htm". It looked like a uni account page, with the tilde in front of a few characters in the URL, and simply filled with text, most of it in English.
It was there that I learned everything. That there were certain people who sometimes, when walking between two places, ended up somewhere else. Some other version of here maybe, nobody was sure. It detailed my experience nearly exactly: the shadowy people-shapes, the feeling of wrongness, the dead air. Apparently, some people had spent much time in these places, exploring it even. This place parallelled the regular world, with generally buildings and streets in the same places. There were several names used for it: the dead world, the shadow world, the other place. People wondered if it was the past, or the future of our time, or something else.
Mostly I was interested in never going there again. The page, which seemed filled with accounts written by other people who had sent mails to the page author, mentioned that all anyone needed to do to enter this world was be in a particular state of mind when crossing a threshold. Threshold meaning mostly doorways, but people mentioned windows and even bridges. Going back over that same threshold brought you back.
I had no idea what my state of mind had been at the metro station, except distracted, so the next several weeks I was a nervous wreck walking around, trying to be hyper-aware of everything whenever I walked through, well, anything. I avoided the metro the first week, walking to the other side of town to get to classes, but eventually my inner laziness and being late once convinced me to try public transport again, and I carefully stepped into a train without issue.
But over the months, it happened again, several times. At some point I practiced different states of mind going back and forth over the entrance to my room, trying to pin down what triggered it. I finally got enough of an idea that I felt almost comfortable getting through life more or less normally. Also, eventually, my natural curiosity did get the better of me, and I did spend time exploring my own city in this other version. The people-shaped creatures seemed to never notice me and wandered about as if going about their day. There were more around public areas during the day than at night. Night in the other version was even deader than the day, dark even where lights were on. I noticed things like there was never any wind and no signs of any animals like birds or dogs. When travelling to another city, I ended up spending at least a few hours checking out its "other" version.
Things continued this way for several years, as life went on. I finished school, met a nice girl who was finishing a psychology degree, and we married. I got sick, ending up in hospital where we discovered I was a type 1 diabetic. I worked a few years at a large medical imaging company, but ended up back at the university, this time teaching and researching. I had moved into biomedical physics, maybe because it seemed like an area that helped people. My wife became a child psychologist. Our little girl came along, and then a few years later our son. Everything seemed fine. I never told anyone about the thresholds.
Then, one time, I was at a conference in a country filled with physicists and mountains. It had been several heavy days, and I was mentally and physically wiped at the end. I wasn't paying attention. I should have been paying attention. I was thinking about being home. Just, really looking forward to walking up to my home, right as I stepped onto the plane.
A greasy jumble of distortion went through and around me, and between one step and the next, I was outdoors. On my street, facing my front door, half-stepped through the metal gate that separates our little garden from the sidewalk. I had my messenger bag across my shoulder, my passport with flight ticket still in my hand, and I stood there frozen, staring at my house. What. The. Hell.
"Tatiiiiiii!" squealed my daughter in delight. Shocked, I looked to see her running towards me. She jumped up at me, barely three, demanding to be picked up, which I did automatically. My brain was whirling. My wife was also in the garden, looking at me with surprise, and I met her gaze with the same expression.
I rushed into the house, to the living room where my son was in his baby playpen. I looked for the clock; it was just five minutes after I was supposed to have boarded the plane. I set my daughter down as my wife came in behind me.
"How are you home early?" she asked me right as I asked her "What's the date today?"
It was the same day, nearly the same time, and I had apparently just gone hundreds of kilometres in nearly an instant. I insisted I needed to get to the airport, and we argued as I tried to keep her from coming with me. She's stubborn so of course she came, telling our sweet neighbour to watch the kids, but I had no answers for her questions. I drove too fast, racing to the airport, and ended up in Arrivals. I tried to explain to someone behind a counter that a flight coming in had luggage of mine for a flight I had checked into but wasn't on. I was a frustrated, confused mess and while eventually things seemed to work out, I couldn't explain to my wife what had happened. I had the ticket, and the airline verified I'd checked in, but I don't know what she really thought. I'm not sure what I really thought. She spent weeks looking at me strangely, and the atmosphere in the house got a little tense for a while.
I wondered what the person behind me in the line to board had seen. Two colleagues from university were on the same flight; we'd been chatting before getting up to board, but we were not next to each other in the line.
I ended up back on the Internet, looking for an explanation for this new horror. Clearly this was related to that other thing, the world through the thresholds. There was nothing, absolutely nothing anywhere, and the last thing I could think of was to look for that faculty page from years earlier, which I did, and sent an email. The old page was gone, replaced with just two paragraphs of contact info and a note about retirement.
The reply I got back almost a week later was that I had done something called travelling, but with a capital T. There were many questions in the email and many warnings. I had a short correspondence with this person, a retired engineer who claimed to have done this very thing before. There had been no terrible consequences, and may have been caused by my successfully avoiding the threshold world so long. At the time of the conference, it had been nearly a year since I had last stepped foot in that other realm.
If all I had to do was visit every few months, I could do that.
It was during those later visits that something new happened. I was doing an evening walk "to clear my head" as I told my family. Just a circle around the neighbourhood, crossing the threshold of our garden gate into the now-familiar still, dead world. By then the wrong was just a shimmering background buzz in the back of my mind. I wondered if there were other people going through these same motions elsewhere, trying to keep the weird at bay.
I was turning a corner in my neighbourhood when something went past me. I can only describe it as a lack of something. A sort of cold void. I blinked and looked behind me and saw the poorly-lit street distort in a wave, as if some giant lens was moving past. It was moving away from me, but I shivered, and hurried home.
On another threshold visit, I had left my university building late after a meeting and was sitting on the steps outside in the dark evening. The bustle of people had vanished, and I looked out at a dingy empty parking strip without the cars I knew were there. There was always a little bit of sound in that world, just muffled, so I noticed a deep silence off to my left. There was that distortion again, moving along the street. I tensed up as it passed in front of me, a sensation of cold and nothing and bent light moving from left to right. After it was off to my right, I stood up warily. It became still, so I hurried back through the building's doorways and back into the real world, shaking.
I didn't know what it was, or why I was suddenly seeing it, and the email I sent to the retired engineer remained unanswered.
The red-haired man who had met me was named Chris, and apparently his Institute (which I am refusing to name here) had gotten the bright idea of trying to find a way to use that dead world for useful purposes. The more adventurous threshold-crossers had managed to bring regular people with them into the other world, and some even Travelled. At the same time, a research team had set up rings of sensors around plywood doorways attached to styrofoam walls, trying to measure what happened as someone walked through. I suppose if you could build some sort of worldwide teleportation service, you could really change the world, but it did not seem like a good idea to me to bring even more people in contact with this place.
The Institute was one of those think-tank type places with strong ideas about how the world should run. I am wary of places like these, places with these strong ideologies that seemed disconnected from what happened to real people. I grew up under an oppressive ideology, lived through a revolution and then its aftermath. There are consequences, and it seems to me that those who would happily bring revolution seem to never stick around once it's started. Or they become other people if they win. Or they were not good people to begin with.
There had originally been three threshold-crossers working at this Institute. Two of them could Travel and had been learning more about doing it, such as how to bring people with them while they did so. Weeks before I woke up in the glass box, they had both vanished into the threshold world within a week of each other, one with another "normal" person who was being brought along. Meanwhile, the doorway sensors had been showing activity during inactive hours. The "Big Cold" as they called it had somehow come into the real world. The tasks they had for me were two: help build a sort of barrier with the laboratory team, and then be bait. Yes, bait.
If I entered the threshold world from their complex, the void entity would almost certainly appear. It seemed to be watching that area. They had another location, the empty fields of Siberia, where a ring of doorways had been constructed. Once they had a working barrier, I would enter into the threshold world, get the void's attention, and lead it to that other location by Travelling to it. The team there would activate the the barrier, trapping it.
I didn't like any of it, but went along. They said my family had been told I was doing emergency work and they needed to stay somewhere else for "security reasons". Aiurea! I knew my wife wasn't dumb enough to believe any of that.
There was also the argument that perhaps something had been awoken in that dead world and this void, this Big Cold, would begin regularly visiting our world. I didn't want that either.
I was given some more clothes to add to what I'd already been wearing, and I slept in a room on the site. They mostly gave me free reign within the complex of buildings, which really was situated in the middle of a desert with only a lonely highway road connecting it to anything. I was also supplied with my brand of short-acting insulin and kits compatible with my pump. I guess the problems with insulin in the US do not matter if you have a wealthy company buying your supplies.
The people I was working with were generally polite and I reminded myself constantly that they were not the ones who took the decision to bring me here. But when I am either frightened or upset, I tend to get sarcastic. A bad trait, but I can't seem to help it. When introduced to the people I would be working with, one asked whether I spoke English as he reached out to shake my hand. "No, not a word," I told him. The relationship never really improved from there.
I asked if it was likely that other groups were working on a similar project. "We're certain of it," Chris said. It seemed they were trying to beat a clock of some sort, to be the first to understand the basics of this other world enough to exploit it.
"Doesn't, ah, doesn't anyone think that maybe you should not do this?" I asked seriously. The group of them looked at me as if I said something very silly. I looked at their other threshold-crosser, a young woman. "Do you not feel that wrong when you visit it?" I asked her. She shrugged and replied that it looked pretty bad and that simply influenced how we felt. How could she possibly ignore that feeling?
Additionally, this organisation was as bad as LinkedIn recruiters in determining what exactly I did for work. What the Institute needed was more of a materials person. My university has a whole department for condensed state and material physics, but this is not mine. I could assist somewhat in the lab, but really didn't add anything.
Almost two long weeks went by.
Then one day, I saw that someone had left their mobile phone in the empty break area. Before I could think, I'd snatched it and found it still unlocked. I quickly stabbed in my wife's number from memory, and with shaking hands held the phone while it made call-noises, desperately praying that nobody would walk in on me. My heart collapsed when I heard, not entirely unexpectedly, the automated "this number is no longer in service" message, and I sunk to the floor in despair. Then, for some reason, I thought to call my own number. I assumed the Institute had my mobile with my other stuff they had taken from me like my keys, so it was a weird idea, but... why not.
I am very happy I tried this, because after just a few moments, her voice was there. It was the most beautiful sound ever. She had my mobile! They had dumped my stuff at the house when they visited to deliver the lie that she needed to grab the kids and leave. I was crying as I tried to quickly explain that I didn't have much time, that she shouldn't call that number back, asking where she was and telling her I loved and missed them all. She said they were staying with her parents in the south, a place I knew well enough. I told her I didn't know what exactly was going on but that I was trying very hard to get home soon. As I ended the call I thought to delete the calls from the history, although I'm sure someone could figure a way to get that back. Wiping the phone off of my sweaty prints, I set it back where I'd found it, grabbed my tea and left trembling a little with joy and fear. My family was not prisoner! And they were not in the US! I felt so much better.
The barrier seemed ready, in that the sensors accompanying it measured attempts by the void to enter one of the thresholds in the lab, and that nothing had made it through. A little flaky and a lot of ifs, but Americans are as impatient as they are ignorant of things like where my country is on a map.
Ai, my excuses. I should be better than this. Anyway, this meant it was time to try the fishing expedition. First, I had to do a practice run. Late in the day I watched a live stream of the people in Russia, sitting in the morning light inside a hexagon-like structure, and used that to hold in my head while walking through one of the lab doorways. The first few times I only ended up walking out the other side, or into the threshold world, but I did finally make it. It was a particular adjustment of thought that seemed to do the trick. I ended up stepping into a circle of plywood walls with several doorways just leading back out into the tundra. The guys there, two Americans and a Russian, greeted me with an enthusiasm I couldn't seem to match myself, but I think I faked it pretty well. Admittedly, a small part of me found the success of literally walking to the other side of the planet in a few steps quite amazing. If it just weren't for all the other things associated with it, like the ever-present feeling of wrong that greasily brushed over me while I did it.
They ran me through what I should do, mainly that as soon as I got there during the real event I should wait until the void followed me to that camp, then get back to the Institute while the three men secured a barrier behind me and got themselves safely out of the ring of doors.
It seemed a silly plan. I admit I was surprised someone hadn't thought of shooting at it. Wasn't that how people dealt with most problems here? I had almost expected my new colleagues to be armed. Laugh at me, but in truth several of them did have firearms, they simply left them in their vehicles for the day. This idea just blows my mind, sorry.
I woke up late on the day of the plan, and was still pretty tired. I made sure I ate well, programmed my pump, and worked hard to seem excited. I had spent the night doing a lot of thinking, then testing, then more thinking.
The Americans seemed pumped, like they thought they were NASA about to do a space launch. They kept asking me how I felt. I was a little excited in fact, and used that to play up enthusiasm for the mission. Before I went to the lab, I darted into the break area and grabbed a few sticks of coffee sugar and stuffed them into my shirt pocket. Today I was wearing the same clothes I had worn when they'd brought me here. Either this would work or not, but either way, I wasn't coming back here.
Instead of just starting, Chris felt he had to say something to everyone. I tuned out the speech, thinking through my ideas which, to be honest, in the light of day seemed a little ridiculous. And then it was time. I took a breath, and everyone watched me walk through that plywood structure and vanish.
I didn't waste time. I grabbed that world's version of the metal coat stand which stood by the entrance, and then I thought about the Russian tundra as I stepped out.
Fresh air and a cool but not cold wind hit me immediately after the sensation of greasy distortion as I stepped out into the ring of doorways. The three men who had been sitting and waiting for me in the early light stood up and began turning things on and setting up. They were so busy they didn't initially see me knocking over the camera sending the live stream back to the US, or unscrewing the nut on the negative terminal of the large battery they'd brought with jittery fingers and pulling the cable off. I finally started using the metal coat stand to knock the groups of plywood sheets over onto the ground. No longer thresholds.
One of the men noticed me and started screaming at me and flipping me off. I looked around for the void, which I knew had followed me. I walked away from the men until all of them together were nearer each other than to me, hoping my thoughts on how this all worked was correct.
The men were more worried about the stuff I'd pushed over and the fact that they had no power for the barriers, so they didn't come after me at all. One of them made a yell and fell down, then a second. The third man started running towards the utility truck which had been parked a few meters away. I worried he would be able to drive off and I ran back towards what was left of the structure, but I saw the glass of the windscreen frosting over and then heard the engine cut out.
I knocked over the last wooden frame so there were no fake doorways anywhere, keeping my eye on the area around the truck. Now to really test my ridiculous idea.
I threw down the coat stand mostly straight onto the mushy ground. I closed my eyes, breathed, and imagined myself walking into that room in Dakota with the television-set setup, and stepped over the thin metal bar.
The distortion rippled around me and I walked into a bustle of excited commotion, feeling a little dizzy and a bit of elation. It worked! A threshold isn't a doorway. It's an arbitrary division between any two areas, completely dependent on someone's viewpoint. The crosser's viewpoint. And the whole idea of a ring of thresholds in Siberia was also stupid. Why a ring? Why an over-engineered high-tech barrier? To lock the void of nothingness into the Russian tundra, I'd have just had one doorway, and as soon as the thing came through, just tipped it over.
The void followed those who Travelled, and it followed those of us who entered that other world. The world which felt dead. I thought it really was dead in some way, and we were too alive compared to it. My guess? The void entity was a sort of compensation, an amount of no heat, no life, no-nothing roaming around, attracted to the highest amounts of something/warmth/aliveness it ran into. When I distanced myself from the three men in Russia, the three of them were in total a higher amount of liveliness than I was alone and further away. The combustion of the truck's engine may have also been an attractant, who knows.
And now it had possibly followed me to this room full of excited people, since if a metal pole was enough for me, it should be enough for that thing. My theory about the thresholds in the lab was that they too were arbitrary, in that they weren't actual divisions of anything—just props for our minds. Those laboratory doorways were used exclusively by threshold-crossers, and this had allowed the void to venture into our world. It wasn't going to start popping up through random entrances anywhere in the world, just ones that served no other purpose and was exclusively used by us overly-alive intruders. Our world did not need protection from this thing.
I backed out of the room into the hallway, not sure if anyone saw me. Time to set my system into chaotic disorder. I read my glucose meter and adjusted my pump, setting a bolus of several units. I started hearing screams and yells in the room and that was the confirmation that complete nothing had indeed followed me here. I needed it to do a little destruction before I left. I desperately hoped this would keep whoever was left away from my family, and if I survived, me.
Compared to the people in the room, although there were more of them, I was still probably like a bright spotlight next to candles. So long as I stuck around, it would wander, looking for me, but going after energetic people as it did. But I was about to leave, and it would likely follow me again. I started feeling strange, and sweat broke out on my skin. Time to go.
I peeked back into the room, seeing not just people on the ground but equipment without lights. I closed my eyes, imagining the entrance to the little balcony of my parents-in-law's senior-friendly apartment. I stepped through the door and into darkness.
I'd forgotten that back home it was around three in the morning, but luckily the door to the balcony was open to let in night air and I stumbled into the half-open door and onto a pile of pots on the balcony. Stupid. It could have been closed, which meant I wouldn't have Travelled at all. I turned right around and limped back towards the living room, this time to the dead world, because I was surely being followed.
The dead world was even darker, and I staggered into the house, stopping to catch my breath as dizziness overcame me and everything started shaking. My blood sugar was dropping rapidly, and I needed to make it upstairs.
I dog-crawled up the stairs and pulled myself forward to the guest bedroom which was where we slept when we came to visit. There was a bed in the room, but in this world it was empty, the walls sagging and the curtains wilted. I pulled the sugar packets out of my pocket and clutched them in my hand, climbing up onto the edge of the bed. The room was definitely darker, fuzzier, and something was coming up the stairs.
My thoughts became glacial, my skin was sweaty, and my body temperature dropped. Soon I would be unconscious. My liveliness would decline to near the same levels as everything else here, and the void would have little to compensate for. It would go away, the trail it was following having vanished in a wash of insulin.
Dying is also crossing a sort of threshold too, isn't it?
I woke up somewhere unfamiliar. The lights above me, and a curtain rod with a hideous medicinal-pink sheet hanging from it, and the sound of my son speaking told me what I needed to know. I managed to turn my head towards the sound, and there was my wife. She looked pretty worn out. On a chair next to her, my daughter was babbling with my son while they scribbled at paper with crayons. I drank them in.
My movement had attracted their attention and suddenly both kids were climbing onto me while my wife stood over me with a worried face. I looked up at her. "I think we're okay," I croaked at her.
"What happened??" she asked in a hoarse whisper.
"I will tell you, draga mea. I will tell you everything, I promise."
She had woken up to the sudden weight of me on the edge of the bed, found me nearly dead and the sugar packets, and had smeared as much of the powder as she dared into my mouth while calling the ambulance.
I had hoped that if I'd survived, the Institute would never contact me again, and so far, it hasn't. I came out of hospital with a tremor which is visible when I'm tired, but otherwise I seem okay. I did tell my wife everything, which, while she found it hard to believe, enough inexplicable things had happened that she was convinced. Unexpectedly, it felt good to have someone know my secret.
I went back to my life for the most part, still taking an occasional careful detour into the threshold world to keep anything worse at bay, and I thought, I can do this. This was fine.
But last night, my little angel, now nine years old, came bouncing into my study where I was finishing up grading papers. She was excited.
"Tati! Tati! I did something cool!" she exclaimed. I looked at her. "Oh?" I asked. "What did you do?"
She motioned for me to follow her, and being in a good mood, I did. She stopped at the door to the study. "Watch!" she said, holding up a finger importantly. Then she stepped out, not into the hallway, but gone entirely.
Instinctually, without thinking, I stepped through the doorway after her. She was standing in a decaying hallway, black stains on the floor where normally warm rugs lay, and plaster cracks on the yellowed walls. She looked back at me with a grin, but when she saw my face her smile faltered. I rushed forward, grabbed her in my arms, and stepped back into the study.
My wife and son were running up the steps, and found me sitting on the floor holding my daughter and crying, who was now frightened as well.
My worst fear.

  • Some key points: avoid group get togethers or parties, Trick or Treat in your cohort, stay within your community, avoid common touch points (e.g. - hand railings), choose costumes which allow non-medical masks, keep 2 m distance, wear a mask while handing treats (and consider handing out treats outdoors), please distribute premade candy

  • School age students cases are rising, but so are tests. Interpretation?: Last week has seen a rise (though below their peak in April) and positive rate of testing is much lower than the 8% from April. Indication is that schools aren't a driver of spread
  • Federal Covid App?: Tracing app is an additional tool and wants Albertans to have all tools. Some discussion underway for transfer and no timeline
  • We will see more indoor dining because of cold weather. Will regulations change?: Appropriate guidance is provided. Knows restaurants are looking to increase safe dining capacity (e.g. - adding plexiglass between tables) and several options are provided in documentation
  • Train of transmission for Foothills cases?: How it got into Foothills is still under investigation (and defers to AHS). Vast majority of cases can be connected but AHS will have details on how the connections have been made
  • Survey is showing people are avoiding seeking healthcare because of Covid. How can we reverse this?: Recommendation is to note that the vast majority of healthcare interactions have had no recorded issues. Also notes survey was taken months ago and is interested in seeing next round of surveys
  • Response to staff burnout (e.g. - at Foothills)?: Sympathizes with people who are feeling the additional details. Staffing and staff management questions are better answered by AHS, but takes the time to thank all healthcare workers
  • Federal government lists 290 active cases on Albertan first nation reserves. Where are they?: That number is not "active cases"...could be total cases. A report for first nations cases is available publicly. Notes that first nations leadership has done a tremendous job protecting their communities
  • Albertans tend to immunize at lower rates. How will that change this year?: Doesn't offer a prediction
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 117 (+10)
  • Edmonton Northgate's active cases: 109 (rose above 100 today)

Statements by Minister Shandro:
  • Testing is crucial for Covid-19 control
  • Over 1,000,000 Albertans have been tested - a remarkable accomplishment
  • At start, a few hundred tests could be tested
  • Wants to acknowledge AHS and Alberta Precision Labs
  • Thanks Albertans who have gotten tested
  • Government will act to reduce wait times and speed up test results, expand testing, and prepare for winter
  • Wants Alberta to remain a leader
Q&A
  • Plans for more hiring of more hospital staff?: AHS, in January, built up workforce
  • Federal tracing app?: Spoke to Minister Hajdu. Still a couple issues, but happy to continue working with Minister
  • Expanding testing in counties?: Defers to Mauro Chies, who spoke about enhancing testing locations. Some rapid testing in regional centres, though lower throughput
  • What evidence supports the EMS dispatch changes? Will you provide the proof?: EMS, including dispatch is integrated into AHS over a decade ago. AHS made decision to integrate the last 4 municipalities into AHS for 2 reasons: (1) AHS is borderless, and (2) integrate oversight. Met with mayors of the municipalities last week and agreed to look over information he was provided before AHS proceeded. Will be against changes if the evidence shows response times would be adversely affected, but not what AHS evidence is showing him
Statements by Mauro Chies, Board Chair of APL
  • Thanks all front line workers
  • The accomplishment has been made through overtime and flexibility that
  • There is still lots to do going forward
Q&A
  • Drive through testing in winter?: Looking at alternate facilities. Tents worked well in summer (though a bit hot), but need more protection from the elements in the cold
Statements by Dr Hinshaw:
Working from Home
  • Dr Hinshaw has provided the update from home after developing a sore throat on Friday and was tested (negative Covid result). Despite this, doesn't want to pass one whatever it is and will work from home until symptoms resolve
  • Acknowledges that the job can be done remotely and staying home isn't easy, with many facing financial choices
  • Encourages people to stay home and to not expose others when sick
Schools
  • 20 schools with alerts (1 cases) have had no transmission, with class back
  • Active alerts/outbreaks (1+ cases) in 113 schools (~5%) with 210 active cases
  • 47 schools have outbreaks (2+), 6 on "watch" (5+)
  • 9 schools with likely in-school transmission
Foothills Medical Centre
  • Rise in hospitalizations due in part somewhat due to Foothills outbreak
  • 1 death this weekend
  • Outbreak is a significant concern and great deal of work is ongoing
  • 2 additional units have outbreak protocol - one is a transition unit (case linked to outbreak has been identified), one is a short stay (unclear source and outbreak protocol is precaution)
  • 53 cases, 26 patients, 4 deaths
  • Likely that more cases will be identified
  • Critical step is to minimize new spread
  • Visitation limited to end of life or preapproved essential visitors
  • 39 surgeries have been postponed planned for today. Surgeries are being rescheduled, most booked for the next 7 days
Millwoods Shepherd's Care
  • 19 cases linked to outbreak with 2 deaths this weekend
  • AHS working closely with operator. They are on site and meeting virtually
  • Testing offered to all residents and staff
Herd Immunity
  • Many questions about the topic
  • % required to develop herd immunity depends on infection type
  • Estimates for Covid-19 are 50-70% (Canada's serology suggests 1% of population with infection)
  • The suggestion of letting spread occur among younger individuals does not take into account drawbacks
  • The rapid spread means it will likely still spread into vulnerable populations despite best efforts
  • An approach on herd immunity would hurt the elderly and those with chronic conditions
  • Death from Covid-19 is also not the only severe outcome: to date, 1/67 between 20-39 with Covid-19 needed hospital care, 1/18 for 50-69, and 1/4 for 70+
  • These numbers can be a strain for the health system. "We have seen this overload happen in other countries. We do not want it to happen here"
  • We don't know if long lasting immunity is possible, potentially making all lives lost meaningless
  • Reliance on development of safe and effective treatments and vaccines is important
  • The balance of all our health needs until then is important
Other
  • The lower number of positives on Friday was due to "previously clinically reported cases"
Q&A
  • Expectations for flu season?: Depends on Albertans. Some places like Australia had high flu immunization. That plus Covid restrictions limited influenza spread. That is one potential future for Alberta if we go down the same path
  • Level of concern at Foothills?: As with all acute care outbreaks, this is concerning. The regular testing and aggressive tracing is important and there is a capable outbreak team (partly leading to the large numbers we're seeing). Suggests that Misericordia outbreak has greater unknown spread while Foothills has well understood spread
  • Lower mortality despite rising cases since July. Is this due to treatment?: It has been observed in a few places. Age specific breakdown may not reflect...possibly just deaths are related to who is being infected. While treatments are improving, we may see increased death because of outbreaks like the ones we're seeing
  • Halloween?: Working on a guidance document. Looking for a fun, safe Halloween
  • Thoughts on NHL "experiment"?: Shows the importance of planning early, cooperation with public health officials, and constant communication. Highlights usefulness of the private testing for NHL as to not affect the public's health
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 119 (+13)
  • The 4th death over the weekend was in Sherwood Park

2020.09.25 06:59 charlesbrandon490 Selecting the right catering for your next event

Whether you are looking forward to a wedding event or a corporate one, the food that you serve to your guests act as a soul of entire event. Once the purpose of your event is accomplished, the attendees would look right at the food tables and ensure that they are going to have some soulful food very soon. Thus, to impress your guests, it is very important to give the food order to the best catering in Medicine Hat. We know that when you type your query as “the best catering near me”, the internet will net you some hundreds of results. And just by looking at the online profile, it is very difficult to imagine how good or bad a catering agency is. Therefore, it is important that you know the right way to select your catering service.
Here are some of the factors that you can consider and ensure that the catering in Medicine Hat that you chose is the best for you:
  1. Check the Availability
Your first duty is to find out the availability of a particular catering agency. No matter how good a catering agency is, if the same is not available to work for you on your decided date, there is no point in keeping it as an option even. Remove those catering agencies who are not available to work on your dates.
  1. Define your budget
When you browse through internet, you will come across the information on how expensive or how affordable the catering agency is. Before you raise your questions about the budget, you can define your budget constraints and filter the agencies who are offering their services in your budget.
  1. Check the food quality
As it is about catering, you cannot take risk with the food quality. The guests will smell the food before they taste it and the quality of any food can be judged easily by giving it one look. If you are already at the website of the catering agency, try to check their gallery images.
  1. Request a menu tasting session
If you are inviting your honored guests, you should encourage the agency for a menu tasting session. If they are authentic and they are working hard for their clients, they would agree to this point and help you taste their food.
  1. Ask for recommendations
Last but not least, you can ask for recommendations from your friends and family. These recommendations can work as the final filter to reach out to a decision.
Once you filter the catering services against the above mentioned factors, we are sure you would soon be able to pick up one right agency for catering in Medicine Hat. For more information, you can reach out to us.

Statements by Dr Hinshaw
Opioid Report
  • Many Albertans who use opioids face challenges and the pandemic has had dire impacts on their lives
  • In the first 6 months of 2020, 449 died from apparent unintentional opioid poisoning (301 between April and June)
  • Deaths rose during first few months of pandemic. Challenges were faced in accessing supports/service while increasing stress/anxiety/isolation occurred
  • 3,000+ emergency/urgent care visits related to opioid use between April and June
  • Other jurisdictions have seen similar trends
  • Covid protocol has been adjusted to ensure individuals who use drugs can access critical services (harm reduction to treatment to recovery)
  • Will continue to work to reduce the impact of Covid prevention measures on accessing services
  • Stresses that help is available and, if you use drugs, don't use them alone
  • "Ripple effects" of Covid is large and we need to balance Covid-19 and the impacts of the restrictions
Schools
  • 13 schools with alerts have had no transmission since
  • Active alerts/outbreaks (1+ cases) in 97 schools with 163 active cases in total (4% of schools)
  • 32 school outbreaks (2+ cases), 7 with likely transmission, 4 with 5+ cases
  • In school aged cases, weekly # of 5-19 year olds are most strongly trending with overall cases, with peak cases in age group matching peak cases in Alberta
  • Since school started, there has been a week-over-week decrease in cases for this age group despite increases in testing for this group
  • This isn't to minimize school safety, but to highlight importance of community transmission
Foothills
  • Death today was in Foothills
  • Foothills outbreak is concerning and AHS is moving quickly
  • 29 cases (17 patients), 3 deaths in total to date
  • AHS is testing and isolating with "significant precautions"
  • Multiple staff swabbing sites have been installed to increase staff testing on outbreak units. Staff on units are screened twice daily
  • Natural to ask if hospitals are at risk. AHS has moved quickly to protect
  • Stresses that policy is only part of the equation: we all must do our part
  • If you are sick, do not visit/enter a care facility and follow the public health measures "to the letter" while there
  • Recognizes the inconvenience and financial difficulty. Continues to advocate that employers support their employees whenever possible so they can stay home when sick...also recognizes that this can be difficult on employers
Thanksgiving
  • While we want to meet during Thanksgiving, we want to keep it safe
  • Keep it to a maximum 15 people outside your household
  • Have one person plate everyone's meals (or even pre-portion the meal)
Q&A - Second Wave
  • Do you agree with Trudeau's statement that we are in the second wave?: A "wave" implies we have no control over the transmission. Some provinces have determined what they call a wave. Doesn't think that's where Alberta is...case growth is growing but have been relatively stable. Waves are one possible future, as are "small ripples". Albertan's actions are going to decide which we see
  • Are targeted lockdowns being planned in the event of second wave?: It is an option (refers to "enhanced" category online)
Q&A - Covid Cases
  • Should we expect testing numbers to change with no more asymptomatic testing?: It hasn't impacted volume of testing to date. Seems too early to say
  • Why no new model?: Models do not predict future and, while a new model is in development, the overall question of "what we will see" in the fall is already publicly known
  • Is the outbreak in Hope Mission Shelter going to require an increase in distance between mats?: Yes, as per guidelines. Hasn't asked local colleague to ensure has occurred yet
  • Source for Foothills outbreak?: No further information
Q&A - Other
  • Officials in US/Canada are increasingly being personally targeted. Why is this happening? Are you?: Pandemic has caused suffering and health professionals become easy outlet for suffering. While receiving a lot of correspondence from Albertans (including personal and professional criticisms), hasn't received "hate mail or threats"
  • Do you think the harassment is tied to being a woman?: Difficult question to answer as she can only go with her own experience. May be interesting to discuss with male counterparts. Regardless, questions and criticism should be presented respectfully
  • You previously recommended supervised consumption sites for opioids. Are you still pressing for it?: Important to separate different bodies of work. Thinks that "broad spectrum of services" is important. Allocation of resources are policy decisions (defers to Ministers after this)

Statements by Dr Hinshaw:
School Cases
  • 5 schools have had alerts ended
  • 81 schools with 1+ cases (total of 126 cases)
  • 6 new school outbreaks (19 total), defined as 2+ cases in last 14 days
  • 2 schools with likely in-school transmission: Vimy Ridge in Edmonton and Springfield Elementary School in Peace River
  • Again, not unexpected
  • 2 schools on "Watch" status (5+ cases). Vimy Ridge has 6 cases currently
  • 3% of all schools have had cases to date. Transmission has been identified in ~3% of school with cases
  • Sees this as a positive start
Foothills Medical Centre
  • Covid death over weekend occurred at Foothills
  • All acute care outbreaks are taken very seriously
  • 14 patients, 4 staff members in 3 units have tested positive
  • Public health investigation underway and AHS has taken swift action
  • Widespread testing is underway and more cases are likely to be detected
  • Patients with symptoms or are positive are treated in designated rooms
  • Foothills is safe and there is no increased risk for patients
St Joseph's College
  • Men's residence site on the University of Alberta has an outbreak
  • 5 cases
Cohorts
  • Common question is "what are cohorts"?: Small group where physical distancing can be relaxed
  • Household (+15 others), with the cohort definition being consistent for the entire household
  • Coworkers or other people in religious gatherings are NOT cohorts
  • How many sports cohorts can a child be in?: Many factors, including sport, and must be personally decided
  • There is no plan to raise sport cohort size in the immediate future (currently 50)
Q&A - Foothills
  • How worrying is Foothills outbreak?: Acute care outbreaks are always a concern. Seems to have occurred with in-hospital transmission between patients. Factors surrounding the introduction of Covid into the hospital is being investigated. Lessons of Misericordia are being applied
  • Are patients/visitors/staff not masking?: Investigation underway, so no conclusion yet. Inconsistent masking use reported with visitors and being investigated. Report of staff member who worked while symptomatic. We need to better understand why these both occurred as to prevent it from happening again
  • Is it concerning one outbreak is in cardiac unit?: Absolutely a concern - heart disease is a risk factor. Patients will be tested regularly (even if asymptomatic) and situation will be monitored closely
Q&A - Schooling
  • Comments on slow test results for students?: Wants mild symptomatic students to get tested quickly so they can get back to school quickly if negative (currently a work in progress with a lot of work going into it). Close contacts, independent of test result, must stay home because negative tests may develop into positive cases
  • Edmonton Public School has 48 staff, 545 students sent home. Comment?: Knows this has significant impact, is incredibly inconvenient, and understands the frustration. Does not want to downplay this, but vast majority of cases acquired disease in community. Cases in school aged individuals tracks with cases in community (Interjection - I think this is to mean that schools aren't increasing transmission). Asks for patience for the next few weeks as techniques in isolating are refined
  • Were there projections for school cases?: Emphasizes that projections are just a ballpark.
  • How many cases are too many for in-person learning?: Repeats that school aged cases are tracking with community spread, with the important number being number of in-school transmission cases. Education is best given in-person and has a significant benefit to the student's overall health (including social development, learning, educational development)
  • BC reduced screening for schooling. Will Alberta?: Discussion has been made. Alberta isn't far enough along to determine if symptoms can be removed without increasing Covid outbreak risk. Will watch other regions to see their experience
Q&A - Other
  • Who polices gathering sizes in small communities?: Organizers of the event, participants. Assistance and reminders can be provided by law enforcement, public health services, and a complaints website is available through Environmental Public Health. Difficult to do in real time, so if you see an event, try to give AHS a heads up early
  • Plans to change gathering size?: Not planned. Currently watching patterns of transmissions and will discuss restrictions if needed
  • Update to spread of cases in Edmonton?: 1/2 of active cases in Edmonton are close contacts of a confirmed case. Seeing if this spread in particular can be reduced. 1/3 are unknown source and checking of trends are occurring with these cases. Many cases are related to social events, but seeing workplace spread as well
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 100 (rose to 100 over weekend)
  • Edmonton Northeast's active cases: 101 (+7 since Friday)

2020.09.21 19:49 Westypet Where is Date Mike?

I’m on day 3 of a fully developed migraine, where the insomnia and restlessness has taken over. My brain has laughed at the pain meds’ attempt at band-aiding this bullet hole. Maybe writing out some of my insane thoughts will help.
EDIT 2: Thanks to the kind soul who messaged me to let me know that I deserved a broken iPad because kids break things and I should know better. Really? Thank you for your support.
[Cue Circus Music]
Bromos, welcome to my migraine mania brain. I hope you enjoy. This is also long AF.
Every step on the tile floor hurts. I should be reassured and grateful that I can even get out of bed today, but when I do, I can feel my brain jiggling against my head. It’s like stepping on spiky pebbles in a blistering ballet shoe... that’s slightly too small. But in your head.
Medication administration during and after a migraine is very much like managing a migraine itself. It’s a careful balancing of the scales overseen by what feels like a bitchy, sixth grade girl as the judge. A carefully crafted regimen of medicines after years of trial and error, or rather, pain and suffering, missed social and career opportunities, and absentee parenting while a nanny, babysitter, co-parent, or friend is left taking mommy’s place at random and mostly unpredictable times.
So much for planning.
A migraine is like a game of Jenga. Barometric pressure change? Hormone change? Poor food choice? Bright lights? Lack of sleep? Too much sleep? Alcohol? Mercury in retrograde? Any offset in the perfectly balanced scale can tip you over into the OH MY SWEET BABY MOSES HERE IS MY FIRST BORN JUST MAKE IT STOP stage of pain.
Then there’s the fun neurological symptoms that migraines sometimes bring along with them... like an odd, bonus guest at a party. Aura can affect any part of your brain just like a stroke can affect any area of your brain. Muscle weakness? Loss of bodily functions? How about wavy lines in your vision or blindness (try it while driving!) My personal favorites and typical aura symptoms are slurring words without the fun of partying to get that way, or even your Brian playing word swap, which is otherwise known as “aphasia”. You might write down the French word for strawberries (fraises) on your grocery list, or use the name Brian for the word brain. I was unable to say my husband’s name out loud during the aura phase one time. It literally kept slipping away like the computer code in my brain kept deleting it each time I tried to rewrite the word. I’ve written out “roast beef” on a grocery list before as “bf fffff”. If that isn’t the computer color code for a burgundy brown hue, I vote that it should be. I could write a guidebook. Migraines with Aura: Your Brian’s Autocorrect.
I wish there were an easy way to parent while experiencing this shit. If I can’t get help during the pain phase, I have to plug my ears to keep my toddler’s happy and sad shrieks from making me want to claw my own skin off. I have to wear the wrap over sunglasses. I usually take a crap ton of Excedrin while eating my favorite comfort foods to get that sweet dopamine hit and wait for the inevitable moment when I yelp out, “Mommy has to potty! Here’s your ipad.”
Dumping my kid in front of his computer tablet is our saving grace during these painful stages. Guess who brought home a newly spiderwebbed computer? My 5 year old. I specifically told his grandpa that he could not carry it, as he kept dropping it and would break it. I told him before he drove off that LO kept dropping it. Did they listen to me? I’m just a helicopter mom who over prepares and overpacks. So of course not! So it was an unfortunate accident when the 5 year old, hugging his computer tightly against his chest as they walked out to the car, tripped on the wet pavement and smashed his beloved device. What a horrible accident that absolutely could not be avoided. 🙄
I may be extremely selfish but I use the kids’ device time to get some time to breathe. To bleach the sink. To fold laundry. To walk out of the room without someone throwing a tantrum because mommy left. We set limits with screen time, but lean on these things a lot. What are we going to do now??
We’re trying to save money during Covid times. How are we supposed to do that when the tablets keep breaking, we have to keep an after school nanny on staff because of my intermittent yet chronic health issues, and when the roof starts leaking.
Oh wait... the roof leaked and stained the ceiling months ago. Did we deal with it? Meh. Not really. Well, when you live in a hot and humid and hurricane-prone state, you should expect tons of rain. We get rain on the daily, and hadn’t had any more problems. Maybe the leaks were a one off? Out of sight, out of mind. Well, this week, it monsooned, and now we see all of the fun places water wanted to visit. My house is not a timeshare for leaks! I do not have the capacity in my degraded brain to deal with this on-again, off-again shit. This is another steaming pile to add to the mix. 2020 is a popcorn kernel stuck in the gums and I am running out of dental floss.
I am trying, Bromos, to floss this tooth and get going, but putting on a bra and fixing my hair is hard enough today. I don’t have the energy to make phone calls and keep the Karen out of my voice when I call roofers for quotes and schedule inspections. The sound of my own voice hurts and keeping the house organized and bearing the mental load today is almost too much.
Putting my lions mane of somewhat washed (I attempted it last night) and slept-on hair into a scrunchie made me want to vomit. Nothing feels quite like getting your previously fabulous, bleached blonde, now-crunchy hair stuck in a SalonPas patch. On days like this, I wish I had the cajones to shave my head and invest in wigs. My natural hair never does what I want it to anyway. It sounds like a good idea. But, I live in a hot and humid place, and I can’t imagine jumping in a pool, coming up from my impromptu cannonball, only to see the shocked and scared faces of my children gawking a dirty blond hair clump floating in the tidal waves like a drowned rat. I would have to invest a “pool wig” and I guess wig glue, and that seems like a lot of work.
Everything today is a lot of work. Too much work. I need to replace the 3 pain patches on my neck that, during my tossing and turning throughout the night, have rolled up and now look like little beige, shoulder pad joints, and smell vaguely of mint.
Adding insult to injury, I finally started drifting off after 3rd doses of pain medications, sensory deprivation, food dopamine hits, and asmr, when the lady curse is activated, and my world is directed by Wes Craven. It’s just an obnoxious insult from the universe to have to deal with this, TOO. Today, I’m so done. Please stahp. Just stop.
Positive Patty cowering in the corner of my brain pipes up and says, “at least you’re not pregnant!”
She’s right, and hyperemesis gravidarum is no longer welcome in my house, but this week’s scales have been tipped in the negative and The Nothing is eating away at all of my positive instincts. Positive Patty needs to shut the hell up and let these fires burn for hot minute if she knows what is good for her. She can come over another day.
Usually when I am coming out of a migraine, I feel a sort of mania, or enthusiastic drive to make up for lost time. That energy propels me through the headache hangover, the soreness and fatigue, and the loss of time motivates me to keep going. I clean like crazy, I activate Super Mom Mode, and start A Project. Where is that mania today? It’s weird, and not really welcome, but it’s damn useful. Normally I think it’s bizarre and part of me gives the mania side eye. The mania isn’t like Positive Patty. It’s aggressive and insistent. It won’t let me stop and recover back into health in the post-migraine state like I probably need. When the pain phase is gone, the migraine mania bursts in and climbs on top of the pool table in a backwards kangol hat à la Date Mike. And when the night or next day is over, I am almost back to normal. As normal as one can be when you are an puking positive extrovert with a migraine brain and anxiety, depression, and ptsd from HG.
Compared to the hurricanes that so many of you are going through this year, my week is barely a tropical depression, so I feel guilty using this forum to complain about this. I hate to use up any emotional bandwidth if it’s needed elsewhere, but I feel like I can’t even board the struggle bus today. I almost welcome a weird emotional upheaval to kickstart the bounce back process. Where’s Date Mike? I kind of need that mania to get me out of this.
Bromos, I need to pop the scrunchy in my hair and get going. If you have “big girl panty” tips, I’d love to hear them. If you can commiserate or one-up me, that helps too. (Joking!) I used a spoon to complain, but in a way, posting this out kind of gave me one, too?
(EDIT 1 because words.)
Thanks for letting me blow this hot air at y’all.

This roleplay session is a test and is in no way canon. Please place the name of the character you intend to use in #roleplay-meta.
The session will act similar to D&D. You will be given a scenario and will each have a turn to take an action of some sort. Dialogue is free reign, you can say anything anytime, just don't spam the chat. The turns are taken in no order, but everyone gets at least one in between progression.
Please be mindful of anything put into #roleplay-meta during the session. Everything in this channel once the session starts is part of the roleplay; even things in parenthesis (). Use #roleplay-meta to talk out-of-character.
To perform an action, do as you would in Minecraft and use /me [action]. Discord automatically formats it for you as an action. If your action needs some sort of roll, we will roll in #roleplay-meta using Iris.

Scenario:
The eleven of you are on a ship. You are pirates.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7Cpkup4g3I
Alice is the captain of the ship. Pan is her aide.
Ace, Vidak and Misfit are manning the rigs.
Nilin is the ship's doctor, with John her assistant.
Lego is sick and in need of medicine.
Zenarck and Delkyrith man the cannons.
Giron, Dylan and Birdie are crew members without specific jobs.

Aidan 6:59 PM
Ace and Misfit are currently fast asleep while Vidak mans the rigs alone. It is early in the morning and the sun is just beginning to rise.
John is tending to Lego while Nilin tries to come up with a remedy that will cure him.
Zenarck, Delkyrith, Giron, Dylan, Birdie, and Pan are all on the deck. Alice is in the Captain's Quarters.
Suddenly, Lego cries out as his pain increases. Pan instructs Giron to consult the map and search for nearby land so that Nilin can gather herbs.
This roleplay session begins now. You can perform one action in each turn. You can speak as much as you want as long as you don't spam or fill up chat.

Turn 1
W_LM27 Lego 7:02 PM
Lego clutches his chest, gritting his teeth. It seems the pain is coming from- "ME HEART-IES...!" ...his heart, yes...
AceDroo Ace 7:03 PM
Ace is having a nice dream about paper when he is suddenly awoken by a scream nearby
Johniall John 7:03 PM
facepalms as he tries to help lego
Tucker Birdie 7:03 PM
Birdie looks at the others, unsure of what to do. He consults his parrot on how to react. "Oh no! He must be helped!" Giggles a little.
Mifit Diego 7:03 PM
Misfit is still snoring slighly not easily woken when she's done hard work
Nilin 7:04 PM
"Looks like he's getting worse..." Nilin looks through a medical journal, trying to find a type of herbs that could be useful
Dylan 7:04 PM
“Still making puns as you die? I expect no different”
Xalneriva Delkyrith 7:04 PM
Delkyrith sits near a cannon, taking a bite from a stalk of sugarcane. She looks on in concern at the infirmary - Lego still seems to be in quite a bit of pain, and it's been impacting the morale of the ship.
Vidak Casrias 7:04 PM
is working through the night, humming a sea shanty to himself quietly.
Alice 7:04 PM
tends to her quarters, arranging papers, charters, and small supplies in an orderly fashion to get her cabin in tip-top shape before the day's work really begins for her.
Grand_Zenarck Zenarck 7:05 PM
Whistles Sea Shanties while Polishing the Cannons wincing at Lego's Screams
Giron Lirah 7:05 PM
says "Roger that!" to Pan, before having a look at the map, compass in hand, and glancing at the direction of the sun every so often to get their bearings.
Aidan 7:06 PM
A nearby ship approaches.

Turn 2
Tucker Birdie 7:06 PM
Birdie sees the ship but is unsure if he should tell anyone, he shrugs and figures they'll see shortly.
Dylan 7:07 PM
Dylan grabs the handle of his cutlass ready to draw
W_LM27 Lego 7:07 PM
"What can I say, Dylan... I'm a die-mond in the rough. I'm make shore the reaper seas me by himshellf... waitizzataship-"
Giron Lirah 7:07 PM
sees the ship. He yells "Ship approaching!"
Vidak Casrias 7:07 PM
looks up from his work and spots the ship, sighing before turning to the rest of the crew yelling. "ALL HANDS ON DECK!"
Pan Marisol 7:08 PM
“What!?” Rushes to the captain to see if she needs help.
Grand_Zenarck Zenarck 7:08 PM
Loads up the cannonballs in to the cannons "Aye"
AceDroo Ace 7:08 PM
Ace looks in the distance, and then hears Vidak calling for hands on deck. He then helps Vidak with the tasks at hand
Johniall John 7:08 PM
John hears the shouting and is concern
Nilin 7:08 PM
Nilin sighs "Save your breath Lego." She hears the yells from the other crew members and looks nervous
Alice 7:09 PM
puts down her papers, hearing the commotion outside her cabin. She grabs her ornate jacket and slips it on before stepping out on to the main deck and walking steadily over to the crew members.
Aidan 7:10 PM
The ship nears closer. A man stands on the forward, waving his cutlass wildly. It's the dreaded Captain Graybeard, the arch nemesis of our band of heroes.

Turn 3 -- Captain Graybeard must speak first.
oopse Gray 7:12 PM
"Give me all your meat or die!!!"
Tucker Birdie 7:12 PM
Birdie is very confused "Our meat? No! Not the steak!!"
W_LM27 Lego 7:12 PM
"Currently meat-ing you half-mast there, buddy... cough...!"
Pan Marisol 7:13 PM
Pan approaches the captain after hearing the words of the awful nemesis.
“Captain, what are your orders.?”
Xalneriva Delkyrith 7:13 PM
Delkyrith was taking another bite from the sugarcane when she noticed the commotion going on outside. Taking a telescope from the table to her side, she stops cleaning the cannon, walking up to the captain's room.
Giron Lirah 7:13 PM
scrambles, putting the compass away and rolling up the map. He gets up and turns to hear the Captain's orders
Xalneriva Delkyrith 7:13 PM
"Guys, what's the matter here?"
oopse Gray 7:13 PM
waves his cutlass almost snipping off his beard in the process
Dylan 7:14 PM
Dylan draws his cutlass “Not today Graybeard, you wont survive the day!”
Nilin 7:14 PM
"If you're able to make those sort of puns, you can't be that injured Lego." Nilin lightly hits him across the head and cautiously walks out on to the deck to investigate the commotion.
Alice 7:14 PM
pulls out a spyglass and points it at the approaching ship. She sees the flag on the ship and the fearsome Captain Graybeard. She shouts to the others "To your places! As we've practiced!" she collapses her spyglass and draws her own cutlass, heading to the front of the ship
oopse Gray 7:15 PM
Graybeard motions for his crew to start loading up the cannons
Johniall John 7:15 PM
john stays with lego trying to bear his puns
Grand_Zenarck Zenarck 7:15 PM
Facepalms at Lego's Pun before readying the Cannons to fire at the Approaching ship
Mifit Diego 7:16 PM
Misfit is rushing around quickly heading to the front readying her cutlass "You got it Cap!"
AceDroo Ace 7:17 PM
Ace draws his knife and stays above deck on the rigging, waiting patiently for his chance to strike if needed
Giron Lirah 7:17 PM
heads to the side Zenarck is on, readying himself to load the cannons once Zenarck fires.
Vidak Casrias 7:17 PM
climbs up the rigging and draws his cutlass ready to board the opposing ship or protect this one from a boarding party.
Aidan 7:18 PM
Captain Graybeard's ship, the Gray Blight, slows before stopping parallel to The Tavern. His cannons are facing the ship, and The Tavern's cannons are facing his. It's a standoff.

Turn 4
Xalneriva Delkyrith 7:18 PM
"Oh... Shit."
Mifit Diego 7:19 PM
". . . . We gonna sit here all day or fight"

Statements by Dr Hinshaw
Long Weekend
  • Number of cases today are a reminder to be cautious
  • Weekend barbecues and other gatherings have caused outbreaks in the past
  • Relax and enjoy yourself, but do so safely (e.g. - take precautions at gas stations, takeout, etc)
  • Be sure to know restrictions if you plan to travel and prepare backup plans
  • Close contacts are the leading source of transmission in cases to date - keep gatherings small and stay within your own cohort
  • "Now is not the time for sharing anything that has been in your mouth" and specifically lists "smokes, tokes, and vapes" in addition to food
  • Stay at home if you are sick, as disappointing as it may be
Q&A - Testing
  • Is a 5 day wait period acceptable for result turnaround?: Timeline is longer than desired right now. Backlog of tests in last couple weeks. Steps are being taken to reduce timeline (e.g. - a team is specifically assigned to reduce test transportation time)
  • Plans to expand testing capacity?: Knows demand testing may ramp up in the fall with influenza coming up. Working with lab to expand testing capacity if needed
Q&A - Schools
  • Is 1 m distance is acceptable at school/work?: Looking at evidence of distancing measures and will discuss in an advisory call with all medical officers. Currently asks people observe 2 m and wear a mask
  • Response to case identified in an Edmonton school?: Wants parents to know that it was known cases would be identified at schools at some point. Focuses on public health being able to respond to the situation to limit spread in school. Notes that fast turnaround for test results is key
  • (Asked for details): School with 5+ cases will be listed online and will disclose to general public
  • What is the protocol for allowing students to return after they are sent home for symptoms?: Student must provide information who needs it. Protocol/policy don't state that written evidence to allow a student back (Ministry of Education may require more). Students must stay at home if they are not well, even if negative
Q&A - Drop In Centre Outbreak
  • Update on Drop In Centre?: 6 cases (+1 from yesterday). Testing is underway to determine other possible cases.
  • (Specifically about sleeping arrangements at drop in centres): Transmission pattern in drop in outbreaks appear to be based on individual interaction (e.g. - sharing cigarettes). If transmission is based on sleeping arrangements, will adjust guidelines
Q&A - Other
  • Halloween?: Too far out to make hard calls yet
  • How is ABTraceTogether and federal app synergy progressing?: Work is underway
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 134 (+6)
  • Calgary Lower NE's active cases: 119 (+3)
Update 1 - Rearranged Q&A into distinct subjects
Update 2 - Cases in City of Edmonton was initially wrong. 85 (total for Edmonton zone) -> 78

2020.09.04 07:23 Significant-Notice- On vaccine timing, from the comments

MR commentator Sure writes:
Current US excess all-cause mortality is running around 10K above trend line on a good week. For these purposes we need neither know nor care if this is do to Covid directly, fear of catching Covid, or the effects of lockdown policies (e.g. increased rates of suicide from business failure).
Suppose we vaccinated the entire population. We would have to have a fatality rate of 1/32,000 to match a single week of the excess deaths the CDC is reporting every week.
Phase III, according to Moderna, is going to last around 4 months. If we skipped phase III and just jumped to phase IV, we could look to avert around 170,000 deaths with perfect effectiveness. Let’s say that between it being a lousy vaccine and people giving up on social distancing early we only save half of those lives. That gives us around 85,000 lives saved.
This means that we are looking at a 1/4,000 as our rough fatality rate for vaccines to be safer than waiting.
To date, I know of no vaccine that passed phase II clinical trials that has ever had this sort of fatality rate. Further, the vaccine adverse event rate is typically an order of magnitude or more higher than the fatality rate so absent truly astonishingly high rates of clinically significant adverse events it is highly unlikely to hit something greater than 1/4000 but not see some evidence of it with just a few hundred patients under your belt in the early phase trials.
My pre-test probability that any vaccine fall into a mortality rate somewhere between 1/100 and 1/4000 absolute risk increase is pretty low. So low, that all the papers I have read name them specifically rather than tabulating (e.g. Merck V710) and even those tend not to have dramatic increases in mortality (e.g. V710 had increased rates of Staph infections, but no increase in mortality).
Maybe something will be different this time and that will happen. Maybe we will be stuck with an inferior vaccine (though my guess is if we declared all of the top candidates ready for phase IV we could get a wide variety of use). But from where my point of view as I understand things from the coroner, we would need some massively high pre-test priors to make a dent in the weekly excess mortality rates.
For places that have been able to limit the virus’s entry (e.g. the island nations), this is all moot. For places that had massive initial spikes (e.g. Italy), this may also be moot. But for the US which flatten the initial curve and has maintained a steady excess death rate, early adoption seems to have very good Bayesian odds
You could of course make a QALY argument about Covid fatalities against vaccine fatalities, but again you are trying to hit a pretty narrow window: dangerous enough to beat down 10,000 excess deaths a weak, not so dangerous that it would have obviously failed early studies.
Challenge studies may have their place (e.g. ruling out antibody dependent enhancement), but we need to be sure that the immune response works in real world conditions. And at this point I still have terrible data for what actually happens during the course of the infection.
Inaction has one of the highest price tags we have ever seen in modern medicine. I just do not see any evidence that my pre-test priors for a vaccine being that deadly should be remotely high enough to make the math on delay work out (particularly if we can avoid the most susceptible patient populations for VAEs). Certainly my priors for the ability of social action to stop infections is far worse (e.g. HIV, Lyme, Scabies) so I am increasingly convinced that long term it is either a vaccine or the hard road to herd immunity.
CatintheHat addds:
I agree with this rough analysis and the risk is even less because we, probably only have to vaccinate 25 % of the population to stop the epidemic completely which could be done relatively quickly.
For the opposite case, don’t forget this earlier in August post of Alex’s.
I would very gladly run further estimates of this kind. To be clear, I am not endorsing any particular conclusion, rather I think several hundred smart people should be working on this full time. My personal suspicion is that the decisive factor will be “the gains from possibly ending a global depression a few months earlier” vs. “the risk that with a lower quality vaccine we don’t end said depression more effectively than we otherwise might have.” And I hardly see anyone considering that trade-off at all.
There is also a closely related but conceptually separate question of how many vaccines to approve on an earlier basis, and also for how many should we be in a position to do so.

Statements by Dr Hinshaw
New outbreaks
  • Calgary Kidanemehret Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church: 57 confirmed cases. Public health team tracing contacts. Asking anyone who has been in attendance in last 2 weeks to get tested. Children who attended in last 2 weeks should not go to school this week. Concerned there could be more case based on case numbers to date.
  • Later asked for more details on church outbreak: outbreak was just reported, so little is known. Possibly a lapse in following guidelines, but also reviewing to see if guidelines need to be updated to allow for safe gatherings
  • An Edmonton Walmart Supercentre has reported 8 cases in staff. Unclear if staff were exposed at work or common exposure outside workplace
  • Calgary's Lillydale Chicken Plant has 24 cases, 3 recovered
  • Cargill Case Ready has 1 active case, 6 recovered
  • Harmony Meat Plant has 66 active, 3 recovered cases
  • Management in all these outbreaks are working closely with health officials
Total case numbers
  • Case numbers over last 3 days raise concerns
  • Looking closely at new numbers to determine if additional step are necessary
Back to School - Order 33
  • Apologizes for anxiety and confusion the order has sparked; wanted to provide transparency, not to hide information
  • Wanted to ensure school authorities were given the order, "which codifies the guidance that has been online for weeks before the order came into effect today"
  • Understands the concerns. To improve, going forward, commits to a goal of only posting new orders Monday through Thursday and will present it online via social media
  • States that no policy has changed since August 4th, which made mask use for Grade 4-12 is mandatory with exception of seated classroom instruction where 2 m distancing cannot be maintained
  • Details on classroom policy: physical distancing of 2 m is "a useful public health measure" and greater distancing is still important. As such, masking isn't required when classrooms have greatest physical distance possible (when 2 m isn't possible, 2 m if it is) and, if 2 m isn't possible, students are arranged so they don't face each other (e.g. - semicircle) to prevent cough/sneezing directly into another student's face
  • The policy allows students a break from mask use during seated activity
  • Suggests use of non-medical masks during non-seated classroom activity
Order 33 Q&A
  • Why not leave physical distancing in place for a couple weeks?: Guidance has been in place for weeks. Order 33 clarifies the requirements. Requirement for masking has been eased since early August.
  • Why did it clarity come out after registration deadline?: originally meant to come out earlier, but delayed by issues in processes and legal tools in the order. It "would have been ideal" if posted sooner
  • Why is 2 metre limit not enforced in classroom?: notes some students may experience difficulty with learning and communication with masking in classroom. Decision made based on other measures in place (e.g. - surface cleaning, symptom screening)
Back to School - Cohorts
  • In-school cohorts should be small and just limited to the one class
  • Teachers are only in the cohort if they can't keep distance from student
  • Teachers and staff need to be attentive when they aren't in class/not relax once they are away from students
Back to School - School Staff/Teachers
  • No details on positive rate for teachers and staff as profession was not asked for during testing
  • Were notified by AHS of a small number of schools with cases in teachers or staff. Being dealt with at local level
  • How often will ongoing testing be suggested?: Looking at the question of frequency, especially asymptomatic individuals. Will announce it when a decision is made. Focus is on current sample set and getting through those results
  • Asked if mobile testing is being explored for schools: it is being looked at, but trying to determine what is the best way to have it work for teachers
  • Highlights Scotland and Israel as examples of positive and problematic school reopenings
Other comments
  • Covid is a significant mental stressor and may be compounded with the school environment
  • Encourages those struggling to reach out for formal or informal help (e.g. Kid's Help Phone) and to reach out proactively if you see such a scenario
  • About Alberta and Canada's vaccines: Alberta is working with national group on vaccine procurement
  • About possible mandatory masking policy: bulk of cases and trends are in places that may not be impacted by a mask mandate. Majority of cases in Edmonton/Calgary, which already have masking policy. Hears a lot about fatigue following policy
Statements by Deputy Minister Corbould
  • Asked about inconsistencies between schools and other sites made by Order 33, and asked if the order is to avoid litigation from uncomfortable teachers
  • Denies it is to avoid litigation
  • Stresses it does not add policy, but clarifies it
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Edmonton Northgate's active cases: 97 (-4)
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 118 (rose above 100 active over weekend)

Statements by Dr Hinshaw
Back to School - General Emotions and Preparation
  • Knows schools reopening are on many people's minds
  • Natural to feel anxious or nervous heading in
  • Highlights the online toolkit made by Alberta Education
  • Thanks Albertans doing their part to stop virus spread, as well as those in the school environment (attending or employment)
  • Recommends limiting number of cohorts for students initially
  • Asked about confidence in plan and if school closure can be avoided: believes it is the "right first step" with "no one perfect way". Convinced it is critical to help children get back to in-person classes.
Back to School - Outbreak Protocols
  • Notes lack of a hard line for school closure. This is intentional so each situation gets accessed fully
  • Return to school "is complex" and each situation will be different...wants health officials to have all tools for all situations and no specification for when closures occur allow for that
  • Outbreak will be 2+ confirmed cases in staff/students in a 14 day period, or 2+ cases linked to a school setting
  • Parents will be informed of outbreaks as well as single cases, but individuals will be left confidential
  • If a community outbreaks may threaten an outbreak in school, additional preventive measure may be requested for schools
Back to School - Cases at School
  • Notes that student, teacher, or staff member who is exhibiting symptoms must stay home
  • Those who develop symptoms at school must be isolated and sent home ASAP and testing must be arranged via AHS (pharmacies are not allowed)
  • A positive test will result in AHS contacting all close contacts, offer testing, and outline isolation measures
  • e.g. - If a student has been in close contact with a confirmed case, the student must stay home for 14 days and watched for symptoms. They should not be in close contact with others for 14 days
  • Younger students may need close care during isolation. One parent should be assigned while the rest of the family should remain distant. This will reduce likelihood of spread in family
  • In general, close contacts are people who have been within 2 m of a case for 15+ minutes in a day without adequate protection. In a school environment, this could be a lot of students
  • Sharing food/drink or had hug/kissing contact would be considered "close"
  • Non-medical masks are not considered sufficient protection for students/teachers who have spent time with a close contact for determination of close contacts. The exact context can be seen here
Testing Access
  • AHS teams have been working to decrease wait time (transit of tests, entry into lab, frontline testing, and contact tracing)
  • Update has been made to MyHealthRecords: as soon as you sign up, you can access test records immediately
  • Access will expire after 30 days if you do not verify
Other Comments
  • 6 cases have been identified at Bright Horizons Daycare/Out of School Care in Edmonton (detected over past weeks), which closed on August 20th. Infant/Preschool room reopened as no positive cases have been detected there
  • Asked about recreational sports leagues or expanding cohorts: Looking at school re-entry first. Pleased with lack of significant outbreak in sports cohorts
  • Edmonton Pentecostal Church: 100 known cases (+23 since Monday). Feels church's cooperation has help identify these cases
  • Stresses it is unacceptable to target individual from an outbreak environment. Church has received threats
  • Identifies a "second wave" as uncontrolled, exponential spread across province, again refers to situation to date as "ripples"
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Edmonton Northgate's active cases: 106 (-10)
  • Deputy Minister of Education Andre Corbould was in attendance, but did not speak
Update 1 - I have updated the comment about non-medical masks with a link.

2020.08.27 21:52 davidpcbn Cookie loses his fur (author Davidpcbn)

Cookie loses his fur
Fluffies have pretty bad immune systems.
Their bodies are also perfect for the conditions of carrying illnesses and bacteria that can cause illness in humans as well as other fluffies.
If you’re going to keep a fluffy, medicines specifically for fluffies are essential as well as making sure they get their shots.
Why do i mention this?
Cookie became known as a kiss-a-gram.
Laura, the attendant for the day care, had filmed the fluffies all rubbing their mouths and noses against one another attempting to kiss.
All instigated by Cookie. On the video he exclaims that he loves his friends so much.
This kick started a mini social media craze. Owners who saw the video wanted to make their fluffies try this too.
Fluffy experts had noted that fluffies can do this on their own if they have a deep attachment to their special friend. It’s rare because most fluffies only form deep attachments to their human masters as they are programmed.
It all came to an abrupt halt. All the fluffies in the video mentioned had contracted herpes simplex.
Yes, fluffies can catch herpes.
The owners at the nursery had thought the kissing scene was very cute and it got them a lot of attention. And then came the telltale signs of the mouth sores. Some even had the herpes sores on their buttholes.
No one knew how they caught it, everyone knew how it was passed on.
Cookie was expelled from the nursery. Mel had picked him up and heard a few angry shouts her way. She put her middle finger up in the direction of the shouting.
Cookie had cried when he was separated from the room. He didn’t know what expelled was. When he found out it meant that he couldn’t see his friends again, he cried even louder.
His butthole was sore from the herpes and his mouth was sore and he didn’t have friends anymore.
His heart really had the hurties today.
Back home Mel had to go back to work to take the girls team to play hoops in the neighbouring town, Sam would be the one to take Cookie to the nursery.
The appointment was made and Sam took him down. Cookie recognised the place.
“Mummeh is dis pwace Cookie got speshuw pwace an nonos took by meanies?”
Sam paused, but then decided to answer after some thought, “yes sweetie Cookie. But don’t worry, no one is taking your nonos today”
“Tank oo mummeh. Cookie Wub speshuw speshuw pwace” (today Cookie was wearing his red coloured artificial special place. He liked that it glimmered in light)
The Vet instantly recognised Cookie, he had become a local fluffy celebrity after all. The doc began to examine the affected areas and tutted at how bad it looked.
“Yep, this is a pretty bad herpes sore. We’ve got cream for that though.”
The Vet applied the cream on Cookie, who giggled and let out a sigh of relief. He would give Sam arm length gloves and a course of the cream to treat the infection.
And then come the final part. Cookie needed his jab to boost his immune system.
Sam looked at Cookie directly and kept his focus on her. The Vet placed a clean sheet of paper underneath Cookie’s rear.
“Aaaagggghhhhh!!!! Owies! su hewties!! huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhu wy meanie gib hewties?!! huhuhuhuhuhu Cookie poopie pwace su hewties su-“
Cookie had been given a fluffy safe dissolvable sugar cube. He’d been a good boy for his jab. The paper caught the poopies he fired out of his ass once the needle went in.
“Mmmmmm tank oo su much mista”
(He had forgotten about the hurties)
Sam picked up her bag and had the supplies ready to go, “Come on Cookie sweetie. We’ve got to get home for Mel mummy tonight? You’ve been such a very good boy.”
“Otay Mummeh”
The Vet stopped Sam from leaving, he had a question on his lips
“I know you from somewhere don’t I?”
“You do. You don’t remember me? We were on Tinder. We nearly went on a date one time.”
“Ahhh I remember now”
They had a small conversation between themselves. He had stood Sam up on the night of the double dumped. It worked out well in fairness. He was pretty shocked that Mel was her partner and that she didn’t look the type to be on the other side.
Sam smiled and said she’d be back if there were problems. She hoped it was a different vet.
She was disappointed in his last remark. She didn’t look the type to be gay? Was anyone?
If other people could be, why not her? Mel didn’t get the same crap, apparently there were a lot of people who weren’t surprised. Sam was pretty, sure, but “not the type to be gay?” She had difficulty opening up to her parents and she lost a few friends after she came out. She was 100% certain she was gay. Why go through that trouble?
Sam sat down after coming home. She scruffled Cookie’s mane and then fed him some kibble. He didn’t eat much of it and was happy to go to sleep. Must have been the needle.
Mel got back in late. The girls had lost by a small margin, Mel consoled herself with stir fry. After a bit of time in front of the television, Mel went to bed but left Sam on the couch. She’d been quiet all night. She knew better than to ask her if everything was okay just yet.
The next morning they awoke to a shriek. Sam and Mel darted down the stairs. The shriek came from Cookie’s room.
“Mummeh su cowfd huhuhuhuhuhuhuhu Cookie nu hav fur!!!! Cookie am nu fwaffy nao huhuhuhuhuhu”
Cookie’s fur had fallen off.
A call to the Vet surgery confirmed he had a rare allergic reaction to the injection. His fur would grow back, but for now he would be as bald as a coot.
Cookie looked thoroughly miserable. Sam had wrapped a blanket around him and promised to knit him a wooly sweater to keep him warm.
Not even his super wooly willy warmer made him happy. Fluffies pride themselves on their looks. Though Cookie wasn’t a good colour at least he had fluffy fur!! He didn’t feel like a fluffy.
A few days passed and Sam had finished making the wooly jumper and let him wear it. Mel seen him wearing it as well as a wooly hat and seen his bare ass. She stifled a laugh, he looked kind of like Porky Pig but sad and dumber looking.
Cookie kept to the warm part of the room. Not even his toysies could make him happy. He felt what could be described as exposed, all he knew was he didn’t have his fur and felt like a Dummeh. Only dummehs lose their fur!!
Sam had seen how sad he looked all week. Maybe Sketties would cheer him up? He was due a nummie treat and maybe that would make him feel less blue.
She picked up a few art supplies, she’d begin to try some art again. Pencil work, simple stuff for her to get the feel again. Pad of paper, some items to make her upcoming holiday fluffy fake penises.
And then she stopped outside a hairdressing salon. She had another idea of how to cheer up Cookie.
She went inside and asked for a hair cut.
all of it
Cookie had been home waiting for both his mummehs to come home. Maybe Huggies would make him feel less cold? He snuggled into his blanket again. He was so happy his poopy place had stopped hurting (Mel and Sam flopped coins to take turns in applying the lotion to his butt. Who said owning a fluffy was glamorous all the time?)
And then the door opened. Sam had walked in, she was wearing a wooly beanie she hadn’t worn since school.
She greeted Cookie and she asked him if there was anything different about her. This completely confused Cookie.
“.................is Sam-mummeh hab nummies?!”
Sam shrugged, of course he wouldn’t get it. She pulled off her wooly hat. Her hair was gone. Cookie was shocked.
“Mummeh hab nu fuw!!! Mummeh hab nu fuw!!! Mummeh jus wike Cookie!!!!”
Sam gave him a big hug and he cried with joy
“Mummeh jus wike Cookie Wub mummeh tank oo fo nu fuw mummeh!! Mummeh wike Dummeh fwaffy. Mummeh wike Dummeh Cookie”
“We’re not dummies Cookie. We’re jut bald”
“Bawwd?”
“Yes honey, it means no fur or hair”
“Wub oo mummeh. Wub nu fuw mummeh”
Mel had arrived back home and walked into the room. She dropped her kit bag in horror.
Sam picked herself up from hugging Cookie, she did a pose and winked.
“What do you think of my new hair so gorgeous?”
Mel put on a brave face, “uhhhh……..I’m sorry Sammy, that just brings back some painful memories. I liked my hair.” (Mel began to nervously stroke at strands of her hair now).
Sam laughed loudly. Cookie didn’t know what was going on and laughed too.
Sam hugged and kissed her partner, “though it was an accident at school, I guess we can be even now.”
“Wiww Mew-mummeh hab nu fuw too?”
Cookie looked up expectantly at Mel. He was waiting for her to have no “fur” too.
Sam began to look at Mel teasingly, “come on gorgeous. We’ve got to have matching hair dos. Everyone in this house has to have no fur. It’s the fashion hahahahahahaha”
Mel began to wonder if she walked into a madhouse.

(and it’s pretty stinging and painful too)
The owners at the nursery had thought the kissing scene was very cute and it got them a lot of attention.
